With world attention newly focused on Michael Jackson's Quincy Jones-produced Thriller recordings and the accompanying John Landis-directed Thriller video, remake rights to Lycanthrope Productions' An American Werewolf in London have reportedly been sold to Dimension films, the 'genre' arm of Miramax. Both Landis Thriller video and An American Werewolf In London feature used Rick Baker's Oscar winning make-up effects team. The new Werewolf is being developed by producers Sean and Bryan Furst of the upcoming vampire feature Daybreakers, set for a January 2010 release. The 1981 Us/UK comedy horror feature An American Werewolf In London, starred actors David Naughton, Griffin Dunne and Jenny Agutter, winning an Academy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup. Regular readers of Cinema Retro magazine know about actor Joe Sirola's remarkable career through his periodic columns for our publication. In addition to appearing in hundreds of movies, plays and TV series, Joe is also the toast of the town in New York City, due to his exclusive annual party to celebrate the blooming of his rose garden in his penthouse garden just off Central Park. Joe's been throwing these parties for decades, and in doing some research on an article, I came across a New York Daily News society column from 1967 that touted the party as the social event of the month! Who knew that the Nazis -- one of the most brutal regimes in the history of brutal regimes -- would be responsible for such fun, mind-blowingly awesome entertainment? The second I see a dude in a grey German uniform and an eye patch enter the frame, I’m like ‘Whoa. That Nazi is going to provide me a great amount of entertainment this evening’. So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's.
