Parents Guide for
Straw Dogs (1971) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Early in the movie, two characters are seen playfully wrestling before intercourse(not shown).

A girl is shown topless before entering a shower. She walks topless in front of an open window where she is seen by a number of rowdy workers.

Married woman is raped by a former boyfriend. We see him tear off her top (bare breasts are shown, as he pins her arms at her sides) and tear off her panties (seen from the side, so no real lower nudity is shown). Thrusting is shown, but the scene skips from scene to scene frantically. Controversial, since although it begins as a violent rape, half-way through, the woman is clearly shown to be enjoying it.

Second rape happens immediately after the first, at gunpoint. Possible sodomy/anal rape (since woman is face down) but it's not certain. (Victim clearly does not enjoy second attack.)

Brief flashbacks later show similar topless shots from the rape scene.

Violence & Gore

Mild violence(slapping, shoving) is shown through the first thirty minutes or so.

A cat is seen strangled and hanging from a wire.

It is implied that a character has either killed or raped somebody in the past. Later in the movie, he accidentally strangles a girl.

The rape scene has much hitting, slapping, and pulling of hair.

In the climax, the violence is quite graphic. Men are violently (blood burst) shot with a shotgun, the bloody bodies focused on.

A man blows his feet open with a shotgun.

A man gets beaten to death with a fire poker.

People get boiling oil thrown on their faces.

A man gets a bear trap flung onto his head.

Throughout the climax, various objects are thrown, fights break out, things get caught on fire, etc.

Profanity

One use of "shit", a few uses of "hell" and "damn". About fives uses of "bastard". "God damn" used twice.

Characters frquently smoke and drink throughout the movie. One character is drunk throughout the movie.

The rape scene and the bloody climax are very intense scenes.
