28 December 2009 2:30 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Daytime soaps rarely land in Movieline's wheelhouse. But the advent of James Franco's General Hospital career behooves us to acknowledge other ridiculous cast changes -- and this time, we're on the brink of a biggie. As announced in November, Darius McCrary, who has had a rough go of it in the press last we checked, is replacing Shemar Moore as Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless. McCrary most famously dazzled us as Eddie Winslow on Family Matters, and his new gig begins tomorrow. In the meantime, let's review his most dramatic television gig yet. »

18 December 2009 3:07 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

There's good news and bad news from the soap world, and considering lately that the bad news has been horrific -- As the World Turns getting cancelled -- this might be a bit over-dramatic. However, William Russ was fired and Stephen Nichols hired at The Young & the Restless. Bad news for Russ, a very good actor who was doing just fine as Tucker McCall, new billionaire in Genoa City. Good news for fans of Nichols, who was bounced from Days of Our Lives last February.

According to the powers that be at Y&R, the McCall character is going in a different direction. That prompted Russ's dismissal. According to Stephen, Russ handled the firing with grace and class. He left a note in the dressing room for Nichols and wished him well in the role.

Style Hunter: Craig Ferguson's hand puppets

If you watched Craig Ferguson's 1,000th episode last night, you probably realized that the Late Late Show host was noticeably absent from the milestone event. In his place was Wavy, his recurring crocodile hand puppet, who not only performed the monologue, but interviewed guests Jason Schwartzman, Kristen Bell, and Maria Bello as well. If you want to gets your hands on — or in— a plush puppet of your own, you can get your own Wavy courtesy of Folkmanis Puppets (folkmanis.com; $20), who has supplied Ferguson, as well as other shows like The Young and the Restless (really?), with many of their stage puppets. »

2010 WGA Awards Nominees in TV

15 December 2009 12:29 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Despite being a newbie, "Modern Family" will give a heavy competition for older shows. The half-hour comedy series nabs three nominations from 2010 Writers Guild Awards, the same amount that "Mad Men", "30 Rock" and "The Office" get.

"Modern" is to fight for Best Comedy category with "Office" and "30 Rock" in addition to "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and fellow newcomer "Glee". The pilot has also helped "Modern" in scoring a nomination for Episodic Comedy which again lists "30 Rock" and "Office". For being new, "Modern" is put under Best New Series along with "Glee", "The Good Wife", "Hung" and "Nurse Jackie".

Meanwhile, "Mad Men" is a dominator of the drama series, taking in Best Drama nomination and two Episodic Drama nods. Other drama competitors include "Lost", "Dexter", "True Blood" and "Friday Night Lights".

The biggest surprise of all is the inclusion of HBO's low-profile comedy "Eastbound & Down" in the Episodic category. Moreover, "The Simpsons »

CBS cancels 'As the World Turns' -- soaps are dead despite James Franco

8 December 2009 9:10 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Another daytime drama is being canceled after over 50 years on the air -- CBS has announced the world will stop turning for "As the World Turns."

The final episode will air sometime in September 2010, reports the Associated Press. That will be the 54th year for the daytime drama. "As the World Turns" debuted in April 1956 as a half-hour serial focusing on the wealthy Hughes family. It has won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series four times (1987, 1991, 2001 and 2003).

This is the second major soap opera to get the axe recently. "Guiding Light" aired its last episode on Sept. 18, 2009. It holds the record for longest-running drama on television and radio, having run from 1937-2009.

Ratings continue to plummet for soap operas all over the network landscape. We wouldn't be surprised to hear about more of these cancellations in the coming years. This cancellation leaves CBS with only "The Young and the Restless »

As The World Turns cancelled

8 December 2009 8:56 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

First Guiding Light and now this: CBS confirmed this morning that they are canceling another long-running soap opera. Don't worry Young & The Restless fans (for now), the show that is going away is As The World Turns.

The show has been on the air for 54 years. The last episode will air in September.

This is actually really depressing. Soap operas (daytime soap operas, not prime time shows like Melrose Place) are a great dramatic format and deserve a place on the television landscape.

Unfortunately, it looks like the networks are moving further and further away from them, looking for cheaper alternatives. It's weird to think about, but now the only soaps that are left are Y&R, The Bold and the Beautiful, All My Children, One Life To Live, and Day Of Our Lives. And I bet none of those are safe (especially the ones on CBS).

Gays of our Lives (December 8, 2009)

Welcome to another edition of Gays of Our Lives. This week in Gool Theater, we’ve got some very good clips from As the World Turns. And yet, the show still managed to annoy me. Am I just picky? Watch for yourself and see. Plus, Good Times, Bad Times (Dutch) starts an intriguing plot arc, Roman risks his life on All That Matters and One Life to Live continues to astound and amaze. Thankfully, it’s in a good way.

Gool Scoops And Spoilers has the dish on the new gay storyline on Emmerdale, Kyle and Oliver each make a commitment to Nick on One Life to Live, but can they keep their promises? Plus, Ravi comes to the defense of his sisters on Hollyoaks, Ian is trapped in a dicey situation on Shameless (U.S.), the kids from Glee make it to Sectionals in the final episode until – gasp! »
