Sometimes it's true that all's well that ends well. And sometimes to reach that happy ending, arms are twisted, feelings are hurt, and bad blood is spilled. In the case of The Young and the Restless and actor Eric Braeden, there was a good deal of acrimony on both sides. The fact that Braeden is back in the fold now and he will continue as Victor Newman for the foreseeable future, doesn't obscure the fact that it was a nasty situation.

Stuff happens, when you're either sleeping or or living the fabulous and fashionable life we know you have. So we're starting your days with a few tidbits to keep you the sparkling conversationalist your friends expect you to be.
From today's teaser photo, one of the strengths of Sesame Street that has allowed it to last 40 years is that they localize the characters in the 140 countries it plays in. You're looking at Kami, a Muppet that's part of the South African Sesame Street where the AIDS crisis has left so many orphans living with the disease. Kami is female and HIV+, teaching the kids what they need to know about the disease along with the alphabet. This National Geographic piece has more global examples.
Speaking of Sesame Street, it's evidently a piece of the left wing, communist agenda to indoctrinate children against the true America. This is all based on »

Given all this disturbing talk about pay cuts on The Young and the Restless and the rabid (though apparently, unsubstantiated) speculation about the future of One Life to Live, it's always nice to hear some good news about the ailing genre: James Franco is finally in the house - or in the medical ward, rather. ABC has confirmed that Oct. 30 was Franco's first day on General Hospital, a gig we'd like to think he agreed to because he wants to see daytime TV survive just like the rest of us (though it might have simply occurred because he shares the »

If you’ve ever doubted how quickly the world can change once an impasse is broken, consider the incredible case of the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, which is currently featuring a complicated love triangle among three gay male characters. Next week, two of them are planning to participate in a mass “protest” gay wedding ceremony that will also include a (faked) lesbian marriage involving one of the show’s long-time female characters.
But just two years ago, viewers of the CBS soap As the World Turns were growing increasingly frustrated because it seemed clear that the producers of that show were not allowing its two gay teen characters to kiss — a controversy that eventually spilled over into the mainstream media.
As the World Turn’s gay kissing moratorium was finally broken on April 23, 2008 — 211 eleven days after the characters kissed for the first time. But even then, it »

It's been a tumultuous six weeks for Eric Braeden and The Young and the Restless. For a while, it looked like he was on his way out of the soap when contract talks broke down between the star and Sony. Then there was a story in the trades about other actors being contacted to possibly replace him, including William Devane, Paul Michael Glaser and Peter Strauss. Before you could say Jabot Cosmetics, Bob posted the news that Eric and Sony had reached an agreement and Victor Newman would continue to be played by Eric Braeden. Crisis averted.
Well, while he was still in exit mode, the show wrote Victor out. In the storyline, Victor is recovering from a heart transplant and has decided to go to a clinic in Belgium to rehabilitate. This week he's been tying up loose ends before leaving.

With so many companies in the past few years talking about producing online video and other forms of "branded entertainment," I'm amazed by how people often talk about these trends as if they are new. Radio and early television was full of "product placement" and shows produced directly through the subsidy of major brands, such as The Philco Playhouse and Texaco Star Theater. Nowhere has this trend taken greater hold than the soap opera, where the blend of art and commerce is clear from the very title given to the shows. From their early 1930s radio debut and through the "golden era" of broadcast television, soap operas were the consistent daytime juggernaut that fueled experimentation in primetime.
Today, only one soap company remains in the "soap opera" game in that sense, as Procter & Gamble still funds the production of CBS' As the World Turns. However, brands are launching new Web »

Less than two weeks ago, Eric Braeden spoke on his exit from The Young and the Restless, as the veteran actor and the daytime drama couldn't agree on new contract terms.
But a lot can happen in a few days and Braeden finally agreed to a new deal last week. He talked about the experience with Entertainment Tonight:
On his agreement with the show: Let us just say that we arrived at a mutually beneficial arrangement. Obviously, I was very touched by the fans' reaction and support. I must say in all humbleness, it touched me. I had no idea. I am inclined to be a cynic about some things, and I did not expect this type of outpouring.
On his emotions when he thought he was out: As you know, in any kind of divorce or loss like that, you go through so many emotions, you can't think straight for awhile. »

Visibility Matters is a monthly-ish column by AfterEllen.com Founder Sarah Warn about larger trends affecting lesbian/bi women in entertainment and the media.
Visibility Matters: Entertaining the Future
Lesbian/bi visibility in entertainment today is a mass of contradictions. It's both better and worse than it was when I started writing about it more than seven years ago.
There are more lesbian talk show hosts than ever before on network TV, but still very few fictional lesbian characters on broadcast or cable TV.
We now have well-developed, prominent lesbian characters and superheroes in comics — from Willow to Batwoman — but even the most minor lesbian characters are missing from, or "straightened out" in, most studio theatrical releases. Sometimes an entire lesbian subculture is de-gayed, as demonstrated in Whip It.
Female musicians are coming out left and right as gay or bisexual, as we saw when Brandi Carlile finally confirmed last week that she's a lesbian, »

Weeks after announcing his departure from The Young and the Restless, Eric Braeden is back and — as he puts it — "ready to kick ass" as Victor Newman.
Braeden, 68, may come off a bit strong, but his fighting spirit seems only fitting considering what he's recently been through. "I come from the world of sports and it's very simple ... I put out my hand to people but if you don't return your hand or if you come at me...

Actually, I'm not sure he even had time to pack up his stuff at CBS and leave the building, but Eric Braeden is returning to The Young and the Restless.
Allison told you that contract negotiations between Braeden and Sony had come to a standstill. Braeden has been on the show for 30 years and knew that he had to take a pay cut (like everyone in the industry is doing these days), but they couldn't come to terms on what that pay should be, and Braeden felt that Sony had reneged on what they had promised. But it's all in the past now. Braeden will stay with the show.

Phew. That was awfully close.
After weeks of contentious negotiations and a public spat, Sony has confirmed that it's signed Eric Braeden to a new deal on The Young and the Restless.
Braeden himself was prepared to bid farewell to his beloved soap opera after it demanded he take what he described as a ”substantial” pay cut to his seven-figure salary. While terms of a new contract are unknown, sources say the actor has agreed to a three-year deal.
“We’re very happy that Eric will be remaining with The Young and the Restless,’” read a CBS statement. “Victor Newman has been an important part of the Genoa City canvas for nearly 30 years, and we know our audience will be tuning in to see what his plans are next.”

There's peace in Genoa City: Eric Braeden, the longtime star of CBS' top-rated "The Young and the Restless," has agreed to return to the show.
Braeden opted to leave a few weeks ago after producer Sony Pictures Television asked all cast and crew to take major pay cuts. In the actor's case, that mean a reduction from around $1.5 million per year to around $1 million.
But now a person familiar with the matter says Braeden has accepted Sony's pay cut and will return... »

When Eric Braeden walked out of The Young and the Restless, it was my belief that the powers that be would find some way to reach a compromise with him and Victor Newman would remain an integral part of Genoa City. However, the negotiations between Braeden and the folks at Sony turned cold.
Cold as in heartless. Considering the character Braeden has played for nearly 30 years, Victor Newman, he should have understood the daytime TV business had changed. Instead, he was insulted and -- apparently -- grew stubborn. So instead of a compromise, it looks like Braeden is really leaving.
However, today's news suggests that while he walked from a job that was asking him to take a pay cut from $1.5 million a year to $1 million a year, other actors are interested in filling Braeden's shoes. The question is this, though: can another actor play Victor Newman?

No General Hospital spoilers prepared us for this:
Scott Reeves is joining the cast of the drama. The actor will debut in December as Steven Lars Webber, a character last portrayed by Shaun Benson in 2005.
According to TV Guide Magazine, Webber will be thrown into a storyline involving his half-sister, Liz, and the two men in her life: Lucky and Nikolas.
Reeves won't be a series regular, but the recurring role is ideal for the actor and country music artist, who spent a decade as Ryan McNeil on The Young and the Restless.
“I’m still writing music and still recording but I really got hungry for acting again,” said Reeves. “I’ve always had a great respect for General Hospital so I kinda courted them. It was the one show I most wanted to be on.

Things are getting ugly in Genoa City.
The soap opera world is still reeling from the news that Eric Braeden, the longtime star of CBS's No. 1-rated "The Young and the Restless," has chosen to leave the series rather than accept a reduction in his estimated salary of $1.5 million per year.
Now there's word that some well-known actors could end up being cast on the show in order to fill the gap left by Braeden's scheduled November exit.
First, however, so... »
