  • Continuity: The model year of Volkswagen used for Herbie shifts back and forth throughout the film. It's most visible when the side rear windows change size from smaller (1963) to larger (1966).

  • Revealing mistakes: One of the Volkswagens in the Volkswagen fleet has a young couple kissing in the back seat. Whenever we see them, it's a still frame of them kissing with a superimposed background in the back window.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Herbie starts calling up other Volkswagens to defend the firehouse, the first one is another Herbie with the "53" logo painted over. The front seat of that car is also removed and a driver's head is visible (covered in a cap that's the same color as the rest of the car seats). He is almost out of sight, but not quite.

  • Revealing mistakes: When the leads are in the restaurant the first time, a boat passes behind Whitfield. The boat is partially visible through his jacket.

  • Continuity: Towards the end of the movie when Alonzo Hawk and his crew are ambushing the firehouse, the shot of the jukebox playing is obviously a recycled shot. You can clearly see the rope across the jukebox used to secure it to the trolley when the clan reclaimed their furniture earlier in the film.

  • Revealing mistakes: During the Golden Gate Bridge sequence when Herbie is going backwards down the Bridge, he begins to disappear pixel by pixel before he goes off screen.

  • Continuity: When Herbie is challenging the driver of the 1957 Mercury hardtop to a game of chicken (with Willoughby held prisoner inside Herbie), the driver of the Mercury swerves away at the last second. When we next see the driver of the Mercury, he is in what appears to be a Chrysler product vehicle, judging by the uniquely shaped front vent window which was a feature on Chrysler Corporation products between 1957 and 1964.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Herbie is blocked at the dead end by the three large black cars, there is an interior shot of the two lawyers on the car phone. The background blue screen shot shows the same three black cars just coming around the corner.
