My Favorite Herzog Movie

Intriguing fact-based tale, told with sincere pathos and plenty humor. The film is about a man named Kaspar Hauser, who mysteriously appears in a small village and whose background history is almost too bizarre to be true. The man seems to have been raised in captivity, isolated from any human contact. Like Forrest Gump and Chance in "Being There (1979)" (even Spock in 'Star Trek'), director Herzog uses Kaspar as a barometer of the human experience. As Kaspar meets all sorts of people, the viewer is given the opportunity to question the absurdity behind our daily rituals and our ideas on religion, love and life in general. Does civilization free or hinder the human spirit? Herzog explores that question in a most incisive and disarmingly humorous manner. Bruno S. gives one-of-a-kind performance as the enigmatic Kaspar. It is one of those performances very difficult to forget. The great Britta Mira is delightful in a small role. I think this is one of the best films of the 1970s and my favorite Herzog movie (so far). A poignant, bizarre, funny, sad and intriguing film. The Anchor Bay DVD contains a wonderful audio commentary with director Herzog. Highly recommended!
