I'm intrigued by "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus." Director Terry Gilliam is one of my all-time favorites, even if his output over the past decade -- just two movies, "The Brothers Grimm" and "Tideland" -- has left a lot to be desired. Still, we're talking about the guy who successfully adapted Hunter S. Thompson's book "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas." Who gave the world classics like "Brazil," "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Time Bandits." Surely there's some benefit left to extinguish any doubts, right?
There certainly is if you've seen the latest trailer for "Doctor Parnassus," which is filled with mind-bending eye candy. Even if you can't figure out what's going on, you'll have a hard time not being dazzled by what you see. And with the movie serving up the late Heath Ledger's final screen performance, you've got yet another reason to believe we're in for something good. »

2009 and 2010 will see the release of two films by master visionary directors — Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus by Monty Python alum Terry Gilliam. In a world that’s full to the brim of remakes and reboots, unoriginal thought after unoriginal thought, you’d think we’d be happy to see some artistic ingenuity. And before you start: yes, I’m aware that Alice in Wonderland is in no way a “new” idea, but it’s been quite a while since it has been brought to life on screen effectively.
This got me thinking though, with the release of Alice in March and Parnassus this coming December, that here we have two directors whose stylistic flair is almost inseparable from their body of work. Each has had their share of blockbuster successes as well as flops. When they flop, they tend to flop hard. »

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the first episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, so we're celebrating both the specific troupe but also modern sketch comedy as we know it. Before comedy geeks swapped Simpsons esoterica or Mr. Show references, before a Kids in the Hall line served as the password to the sketch-dork club house, there was Monty Python. Here's 10 ways they changed comedy, and here's my favorite Python bit of all time, which isn't from the TV show but I think still counts: Is it the best? Perhaps not -- that might be no one expecting the Spanish Inquisition, »

And now for something completely different...
Monty Python's Flying Circus, the masterful absurd sketch comedy series, first aired on BBC 40 years ago today. The first episode (October 5, 1969) contained the famous "Funniest Joke in the World" sketch, and two weeks later came "Nudge Nudge." It would be almost two full months before the legendary "Dead Parrot" sketch, one of Python's signature moments.
The series would run for four seasons, after which the ensemble turned their attention to movies, including two undeniable classics, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian, both of which featured the late Graham Chapman in leading roles. »

Yet another fragment of BBC Earth gets its own Blu-ray release. What can you expect? If you know anything about BBC Earth then you know it has a reputation for stunning nature footage in a resolution that will make you believe in hi-definition video setups. You’ve seen nature documentaries before, but until you’ve watched one like, say, Yellowstone: Battle for Life produced by top-notch cinematographers on top-of-the-line equipment you don’t know the best the genre has to offer. The natural occurrences captured in this three episode series will have you returning to the disc to show off to your friends exactly what that HD television on your wall is capable of. Yes, the series looks that good.
The division trisecting the series follows a seasonal sway. It starts with “Winter” and then, in a very Monty Python and the Holy Grail-way, gives Spring a miss »

Terry Gilliam’s (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brazil) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, otherwise known to every inhabitant of Earth as the talented Heath Ledger’s final and unfinished film, has released some new, cool-looking shots. These include glimpses of each of Ledger’s famous stand-ins, Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell.
One can’t help but wonder why three actors were cast to replace one, which brings me to my explanation of the film. A traveling theater troupe holds in its possession a magical mirror that it allows paying customers to step through into a wooooooooorld of puuuuure i-ma-gin-aaation. Said mirror was provided by the devil (who else would just be giving something like that away?), who comes for the payment previously promised and hightails it into the mirror with the daughter of the head of the theater troupe. Theater troupe pursues, and we got ourselves a movie. »

If you ever felt there was a need to extend the Bring Out Your Dead scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it looks like writer/director Glenn McQuaid is delivering. I Sell the Dead is a horror comedy which recounts the exploits of a grave robber confessing to a priest on the eve of his execution. According to the official synopsis, Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) tells his story growing up in the trade, joining forces with the master ghoul Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden), and, you know, fighting off the not-quite-dead monsters that go bump in the graveyard. According to the trailer, it looks awesome. And hilarious: There's not a lot of dialog, but I imagine the movie will have a lot of dry conversations. However, the story sounds really intriguing, and a lot of the adventure could easily be played for laughs. And yes, that was Ron Perlman as the priest. This »

These days the one question that everybody seems to be asking me is, in their oh-so eloquent way, “what’s up with the new Raimi movie…any good?” Now that I’ve seen it, I am very happy to be able to report, yes…yes it is.
The reviews are already in for Drag Me To Hell and I think Michael Gingold (of Fangoria - read his take here) and Allan Dart (of Starlog - read his take here) sum it up very nicely. So if you’re interested in accurate analyses from writers that really seem to get the film and Raimi’s sensibilities, I wholeheartedly recommend you give those reviews a “gander”. Since I’m coming late to the party, I’m going to avoid giving my thoughts strictly about the film and instead take a brief look at Mr. Raimi, his style and his work.

Chicago – Monty Python member and Holy Grail co-director Terry Jones will be attending a “Meet the Maker” screening at Chicago’s Lakeshore Theater on Saturday, May 9.
Jones, a founding member of the legendary Monty Python troupe, cut his comedic teeth in 1960’s British television, working with writing partner Michael Palin on shows like David Frost’s “The Frost Report”.
‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ (1975) was born from the successful TV show, and Jones took on the director’s responsibilities along with fellow Pythoner and soon-to-be-notable film director Terry Gilliam.

Before his tragic and ill-timed passing, Heath Ledger was in the middle of making another film after his inspiring characterization of The Joker in The Dark Knight.
This last project that Heath Ledger worked on was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
After Heath’s passing, big name actors Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Johnny Depp stepped in to play the role of Tony that Heath was playing to help finish the film. This Terry Gilliam-directed (Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Monty Python And The Holy Grail) fantasy film is about an extraordinary traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.
Additional cast members for the movie include Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits and Verne Troyer. (Well at least Verne isn’t making any more “personal” videos!)

If you've been waiting anxiously to see what would come of the Pretty in Pink, Clueless, and Mean Girls, games that William Goss mentioned last year, the wait is over! Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they're offering a lot. (Not that I'm surprised.) Variety got a chance to look at the three games, and they say the result "is derivative and pandering, but with just enough surprises to satisfy a target audience with low expectations."
The '80s installment, Pretty in Pink is said to be the strongest of the three, playing like a puzzle workbook with item-hunting -- like those touch screens you can play at a bar. The big highlights: you can choose the prom dress Andie wears to the prom, and even whether she ends up with Blaine or Duckie. The '90s installment, Clueless, has been called out as the weakest -- a drag and drop against the clock dressing game. »

Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, a new series debuting this week on Comedy Central, might be set in a medieval time of wizards and warlords – but it has a very modern sensibility, and an equally modern sense of humor.
When Krod Mandoon, the title character and a self-proclaimed freedom fighter, is giving his band of companions “notes” after a particularly disappointing battle, the hapless wizard Zezelryck complains of a “hostile work environment.”
“We’re freedom fighters!” says an exasperated Krod. “All of our work environments are hostile!”
In short, Krod is part fantasy satire, and part office workplace comedy, but with a slightly different kind of office. And like the actual The Office, it even includes a gay character, Bruce (Marques Ray), who eventually ends up joining Krod’s band.

It’s not often that a replica of a movie prop causes alarm, but that’s exactly what happened when a copy of the “Holy Hand Grenade” from comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail was found in East London. The item was discovered by water company workers in Finsbury, lurking beneath a fire hydrant cover between Tabernacle Street and Epworth Street. Regarding the unusual object as “suspicious”, they acted quickly and soon the area was under siege from the fire brigade, police service and bomb disposal squad. Sounds worthy of a film itself…
In response buildings, including the nearby pub, The Windmill were evacuated and the street cordoned off as the bomb squad got down to action only to find the item was a replica film prop. The street was then declared safe and folks were allowed back into the pub with an Islington police spokesperson assuring the »
