We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love). In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write. Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).
After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man. »

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!
Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.
Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!
Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.
This director's cut bleeds!
Smash Cut joins our Film Fest program which will be held in the Brenden Theatres inside the Palms Casino. »

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in Drive Angry, a revenge movie directed by Patrick Lussier. Cage will star as a man chasing down the people who killed his wife and daughter, with the violence escalating with each death. I know it sounds ridiculous, and that's because it probably will be ridiculous. It sounds a bit like Mad Max, Death Race 2000, and Rolling Vengeance rolled into one. That's right, Rolling Vengeance, look it up. It's great 80's cheese. And intentionally cheesy is exactly how this is going to have to be for it to be bearable. Now, I would like to think since Patrick Lussier, director of this year's campfest My Bloody Valentine, is at the helm, it should be cheesy fun. Who knows, perhaps even another full monty performance by Betsy Rue is in store. However, since it will star Nicolas Cage, I imagine the movie trying to take itself too seriously, or »

A prequel toPaul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race” remake is in the works at Impact Pictures (Anderson and Jeremy Bolt’s production outfit).
In the first film Jason Statham played a wrongly imprisoned racing champion who competes in several televised brutal prison races to win his freedom.
Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, interview) has been hired to write a script, based on a story by Anderson. Giglio may also direct. The script is said to delve into the past of the driver known as Frankenstein.
Created for Paul Bartel’s original 1975 cult classic, Death Race 2000, Frankenstein was played by the late David Carradine. In the film, history said that his face was mangled by so many car wrecks he had to wear an intimidating mask. Carradine returned to Anderson’s remake briefly to voice the new Frankenstein before he was replaced by Jason Statham’s Jensen Ames.

A prequel to last year's generally pointless "Death Race" remake is in the works at Impact Pictures reports Shock Til You Drop. Tony Giglio ("Timber Falls") has been hired to pen a script set before the events of the first film and explores how the deadly prison race got started In the first film Jason Statham played a wrongly imprisoned racing champion who competes in several televised brutal prison races to win his freedom. As the story is a prequel, the characters played by Ian McShane and Joan Allen could return while the original 'Frankenstein', whom Statham's character impersonates, could be the major character which he was in Paul Bartel's original 1975 cult classic "Death Race 2000". The first film's director, Paul W.S Anderson, will also oversee development of the... »

Styd is reporting that Impact Pictures is working on the prequel to Paul Ws Anderson's "Death Race." The production company has already hired Tony Giglio to write a script, based on a story by Anderson. The script is said to delve into the past of the mangled driver known as Frankenstein, who was original played by the late David Carradine in the 1975 film "Death Race 2000" and voiced by Carradine in Anderson's recent "Death Race." Anderson will oversee the prequel as soon as he has completed work on "Resident Evil: Afterlife," on which Giglio is serving as a second unit director. Last year's "Death Race" wasn't that great of a success. The film earned only $36 million domestically on a $45 million budget. But thanks to foreign markets, it was able to gross a worldwide total of $75 million. Click here to read our "Death Race" review. »

Shock Till You Drop is reporting that the 2008 Jason Statham high speed action-fest, Death Race, will be getting another movie. But not a sequel, no, the next Death Race will be a prequel. I guess we won’t be seeing Statham in this one, and not just because he’s got better things to do.
Director of the first Death Race, Paul W.S. Anderson, has already tapped writer Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, Chaos) to script the prequel, based on a story by Anderson. The film will be produced by Impact Pictures (a production outfit shared by Anderson and Jeremy Bolt), and word is it will delve into the past of the driver, Frankenstein.
The late-great David Carradine played Frankenstein in the original Death Race 2000 back in the ’70s, with him doing a brief voice appearance as the character in the remake before Statham’s character, Jensen Ames, replaced him in the driver’s seat. »

Paul Ws Anderson never seems to stop working. It's a lot easier, sure, when working with unabashedly commercial projects, but if some of the filmmakers that I like a lot more could manage to work half as often as he does, this would be a very different cinema landscape. Now, according to Shock Till You Drop, Anderson is working on a prequel to his 2008 film Death Race. Which, wait a second, means he's writing a prequel to a prequel? Death Race was the film that explained the early days of the deadly road sport depicted in the truly entertaining Roger Corman and Paul Bartel film Death Race 2000. Anderson explained at Comic Con '07 that he always wondered how the race depicted in that movie became a national sport sanctioned by the President of the Us, so he wrote the film in which Jason Statham's faceless racer Frankenstein had »

In what is shaping up to be a terrible day for movie news (or should that be a day for terrible movie news?), Shock Till You Drop have announced that for some reason, Paul Ws Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt have decided it would be a good idea to do a prequel to last year’s so-so post-apocalyptic car smasher – Death Race.
According to Styd:
Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, interview) has been hired to write a script, based on a story by Anderson, to be produced by Impact Pictures (Anderson and Jeremy Bolt’s production outfit). Giglio may also direct. The script is said to delve into the past of the driver known as Frankenstein.

After the explosions and sabotage of Death Race last year, you were probably left with many burning questions: how did this lethal contest come about? What's the backstory with the original masked driver Frankenstein? And what sort of socio-economic system would lead to the existence of this deadly sport? Well, worry no more, because a prequel is on the way to answer all those niggling plot holes.Paul W.S. Anderson has written the story for the prequel, which will explore the origins of Frankenstein - played in the original Death Race 2000 film and voiced in Death Race by David Carradine - and explain how the Death Races got started. Tony Giglio, of Timber Falls, is writing the screenplay and may direct.Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt will produce the prequel after they finish work on Resident Evil: Afterlife, on which Giglio is doing second unit work. Give us your thoughts below. »

One of my favorite parts of Death Race from last year (yep, I actually enjoyed it) was that it jumped right into the action. The opening race scene was awesome and there was already a history that we didn't really need to know anything more about. Well, Styd is now reporting that even though it made Universal a wimpy $36.3 million at the box office, Paul W.S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, and Impact Pictures are planning a prequel that will focus on the mysterious driver known as Frankenstein (seen above). Tony Giglio (Chaos, Timber Falls) has been hired to write the screenplay based on a story by Anderson and may also direct. I don't think I need to remind everyone about this, but just in case - Death Race was a remake of the 1975 Paul Bartel cult classic Death Race 2000 in which Frankenstein was played by the late David Carradine. ... »
