In the early 1970s, after a fall from the upper echelons of New York society, a mother and daughter known as Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale were living in increasing squalor in their crumbling East Hampton mansion. Overrun with stray cats and botched dreams, they were unlikely movie stars and even less likely style icons, but they became both after filmmaker brothers Albert and David Maysles captured their bizarre life in Grey Gardens, the 1975 cinema-verite classic. »

Chicago – One of the best films of 2009 is currently playing on HBO in the original “Grey Gardens”. The film itself doesn’t quite stand up to recent accomplishments of the network like “John Adams” or “Recount” but it undeniably features the best performance of the year, including theatrical releases, in the revelatory, career-best work from Drew Barrymore.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0 Bringing new dramatic shades to a quirkiness that she’s always had on-screen, Barrymore plays “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, daughter of “Big Edie” (Jessica Lange). In 1973, Albert and David Maysles entered the reclusive world of the Bouvier Beales to film a documentary about these two eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Living in a run-down house, giving shows for each other, and basically living on the edge of sanity, the documentary “Grey Gardens” was a riveting portrait of these two unforgettable women.

Drew Barrymore "became" her character in new movie "Grey Gardens." The 34-year-old actress plays the young Edith Bouvier Beale - the eccentric cousin of former U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy - in the film, and was so determined to get the part Drew promised director Michael Sucsy she would live just like her character did.
She explained to America's Elle magazine: "I didn't want to come in there like a hungry freak. But I also felt every second counting. So - polite conversation, then he started looking through my binder, and I saw his demeanor change, actually noticing all the hard work I had put into it."
"I said, 'Look - I have all of this inside of me, and I promise you that I will change my face to be her. I will learn how to stop talking out of the side of my mouth. I will go »

Drew Barrymore has revealed that she injected a bit of "darkness" into her role in Grey Gardens. The 34-year-old said that she begged to be given the part of "Little Edie" Beale in the HBO drama because she felt she had "more inside" her than her previous body of work suggests. Barrymore told W that she shut out her life and "lived in the monastery of Edie Beale" to give a convincing portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's cousin. "I was excited to bring my own pain to something," she said. (more) »

Drew Barrymore loved getting dark for new TV movie Grey Gardens - because it allowed her to show fans just how miserable she can be.
The actress insists she isn't always the happy-go-lucky person she portrays in quirky movies and on chat shows, and playing Little Edie Beale in the upcoming showcase gave her the chance to vent her depression.
She tells W magazine, "I was excited to bring my own pain to something. I mean, contrary to my happy-go-luckiness, I have so much darkness in there.
"Playing Edie, I felt like s**t. I thought, 'I’m afraid beyond anything I’ve ever known. I’m miserable; I’m scared; I feel sick all the time.' And I was like, 'Good! At least I have somewhere to put it...' I’m not f**kin’ happy all the time. I like making people feel good, but it was great not to have to please anybody."
Barrymore admits that preparing for the film, which co-stars Jessica Lange and Jeanne Tripplehorn, reminded her of a stint in rehab when she was a teenager.
She became so immersed in the character of real-life recluse Beale, she locked herself away for six months.
The Charlie's Angels star turned her back on friends, newspapers and technology in an effort to get into the mindset of former U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis' odd cousin, who lived with her mother in a sprawling, rundown New York mansion.
The actress explains, "I got institutionalised as a kid, and I felt like I was back there. A lot of times I found myself unhappy and isolated, and the only other time I felt that way was when I was in there. It was absolutely trying to relearn to live. You are learning to become someone else." »
