Golden Horse Awards: Maggie Cheung, Ang Lee, Leon Dai, Tsai Ming-liang

Maggie Cheung alert!

She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.

This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.

France's first lady has agreed to be in a Woody Allen film. She's such an obvious choice, we should have predicted it

Why on earth didn't we predict it long ago? France's first lady, Carla Bruni, has revealed that Woody Allen has asked her to be in one of his films, despite her complete lack of acting experience. And she has said yes.

Bruni – of course! She is a quintessential Minor Woody Allen Character: sexy, wealthy, European in that luxury-hotel sense that he adores, liberated in a pre-feminist sort of way, with creative aspirations that are preposterous but which powerful, besotted men might well indulge in the hope of getting inside her exquisitely tailored culottes.

Paul Giamatti tends to play moody defeatists and rageful misanthropes. Which is just the way he likes it

Thirst: Chan-wook Park’s Vampire Curveball

Chan-wook Park's draw to the horror genre has always been apparent. The dark brutal subject matter of his films, revolving around revenge, mystery, the unattainable and ultimately themes of  regret, redemption and water (which signifies trouble and death in all of Park's Films) could almost be part Alfred Hitchcock, part Roman Polanski and part Sam Fuller. The beautifully lit and gorgeous locked off compositions apparent in his Vengeance trilogy especially, often evokes Kubrick and his humour, which always bubbles under the surface, a kind of playfulness with gore, is perhaps reserved only for the Sam Rami's or George Romero's of the world. Cut, his short film (along with Fruit Chan's Dumplings and Taekashi Miike's Box) which made up one third of Three... Extremes could be seen as his most horrorfied (yes its a word...) film to date. Woody Allen has been making films for forty years now. Forty years, with forty feature length films to his credit if you include What’s Up Tiger Lily? That’s a lot of movies. And it’s understandable that if he makes some bad movies (which he has throughout his career) and then makes a great film (which he’s made a ton of). It’s Woody, so let’s say Sleeper, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cario, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Bullets Over Broadway, Deconstructing Harry, Match Point. Twelve great films. And that’s not including his merely good films. As a batting average that’s pretty great.
