Fun Stuff

Trivia:
Robert Altman received a green light from 20th Century Fox without a finished screenplay - and with Altman's express desire that he make the film without one. more
Goofs:
Continuity: When Millie and Pinkie prepare for dinner party, the time line is way out of whack. Scene begins in early morning, as Millie wakes Pinkie and tells her she is going grocery shopping for the dinner. Millie returns from store (presumably within an hour or so), Pinkie carries out garbage after spilling shrimp cocktail on herself and, en route to trash cans, meets dinner guests who say they can't come because they're on way to a beer joint instead - a scene that would have occurred no later than mid-morning and means that seven or more hours are unaccounted for. more
Quotes:
Millie Lammoreaux: Pinky? What's the matter?
Pinky Rose: I'm scared.
Millie Lammoreaux: What of?
Pinky Rose: I had a bad dream.
Millie Lammoreaux: Dreams can't hurt ya.
Pinky Rose: Can I sleep with you?
Millie Lammoreaux: Sure.

"Three Women" is the most bizarre, brilliant thing I've seen by Robert Altman . The plot, which superficially resembles "Persona", is secondary to atmosphere and characterization, until the final third when Altman feels the need for a pay-off. And even though I respect Altman's drive towards some ambiguous psychic rendering, I prefer the movie when it's just happy to observe the personalities of Millie and Pinky. The dialogue that these two girls utter is like nothing I've ever heard before, except possibly in drops of real-life conversations, when you aren't aware of any context. I couldn't believe Robert Altman wrote it himself. The script's source is in the idea of people who have become vacuous as a result of having completely bought into the consumer culture, but it treats the idea with such an enormous amount of humanity that the objects have to be seen as extremely sympathetic. All Millie seems to want to talk about is how exciting her life is because she has access to all these 15-minute recipes that she got from McCall's. Her descriptions of her cooking are so incredibly flaky (and hilarious) that they're never anything less than memorable and vivid. And I've never before seen a movie that used closeups of generic cheese whiz as a means for a larger statement. I think its incredibly exciting that somebody finally saw the potential in using low-brow culture as a vehicle for humor and pathos. What an accomplishment! Unlike any other movie character, Millie is so sympathetic because the culture that she wants so desperately to be a part of (and thinks she is) is the same culture that has deemed her irrelevant, specifically because she wants to be included. And nobody has the patience to clue her in on what she's missing. Millie is the opposite of cynical, which is what makes her seem dumb. And this notion, I think, has incredible resonance. I would have been more than satisfied if the movie about been called "A Girl", but on top of this, Altman gives the movie another dimension by having Pinky worship Millie. The absurdity here is both poignant and hilarious. Then, Altman gets into some increasingly complicated analysis by having a third, nearly unreadable woman interact with the other two. Here, the movie changes into something else that's maybe not entirely successful, though it does make you think about the earlier stuff that seemed too entertaining to have been used as a dramatic set-up. I haven't even begun to talk about the performances of Sissy Spacek and especially Shelly Duvall who matches the integrity and imagination of the script every step of the way. "Three Women" makes me pine for other stuff that is offbeat and honest, and Shelly Duvall shows a really big heart because she's obviously loves and is in love with her character. She has the size to become Millie. She and the movie are breathtaking.
