Vittorio Gassman reveals the family secrets to his nephew
10 January 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Anima Persa" means lost soul, and that's what the story is about, but not in a supernatural sense. It's in a moral sense and in a sense of the balance of the mind.

The story is relatively simple, taking place mainly in a large and decaying residence that once was a splendid residence. Here lives Gassman with his wife, Catherine Deneuve. A housekeeper also is present. They are visited for a summer by a 19-year old young man, their nephew, played by Danilo Mattei. The story is the revealing to Mattei and to us of the family secrets.

The house has an attic with a forbidden room, and that's sometimes used as a title. Mattei hears noises in it, above the ceiling of his room. The housekeeper lets him peep in, and he sees an inmate, a demented man. As the days pass, certain inconsistencies and puzzles present themselves to the inquisitive lad. Little by little, the curtains that obscure the past are drawn back to reveal the performances of this family, both in the past and in the present.

The movie is somewhat of a mystery-thriller. It is, of course, not a giallo. This is a serious drama actually that explores a number of unusual themes revolving around passion, madness, and youth and the impossibility of preserving it. It is well-staged in Venice and in the chosen decaying palazzo. Its aims are modest. It is not meant to be a large story. Rather it has a narrow focus.

Vittorio Gassman gives an outstanding performance. The movie is well worth seeing for that alone. Gassman, of course, was one of Italy's most famous actors with a long and distinguished career, known for his professionalism and magnetism, and he shows this here, really in an astonishing depth.
