Grace (2009)

14 June 2009 9:36 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Review by Jim Hemphill

"Subtlety" and "nuance" are not words that immediately come to mind while viewing most contemporary horror movies, but Paul Solet's debut feature Grace is as far from an ordinary horror film as you can get. An eerie meditation on childbirth and matriarchy, it's a movie that's as intelligent as it is scary, and its hypnotic blend of surrealistic imagery and universal fears (most of them having to do with the anxieties of parenthood and love, romantic and otherwise) really gets under your skin in a way that even the best slasher flicks can't touch.

Like Kubrick's The Shining or Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face, it's a movie that relies less on shocks and gimmicks than on a steadily increasing sense of unease-and yet, when the tensions that have been building throughout the film are released in the bloody final act, Grace takes the …

DVD Playhouse—June 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The International (Sony) An Interpol agent (Clive Owen) joins forces with a Manhattan D.A. (Naomi Watts) to bring down an arms dealing ring and a corrupt global banking cartel that’s funding them. Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. Armin Mueller-Stahl is wonderful as a world-weary covert op. Bonuses: Extended scene; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection(Sony) Five films from the two-time Oscar winning actor, focusing on his early career: Phfft! is a zippy comedy from 1954, one of Lemmon’s earliest films, in which …

Cronenberg: A new look at Videodrome

23 May 2009 8:04 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After taking a 30th Anniversary look at David Cronenberg's The Brood yesterday (read it here), Jack returns with a fresh look at Videodrome, a Fango favorite seen on the classic cover of Fangoria #25 (pictured below).

One of the things that make David Cronenberg a great writer/director is that no matter how whacked-out his premises are, they come from a place of uncomfortable truth.

The director known for pioneering the “body-horror” subgenre frequently constructs his visceral nightmares as allegories for all-to-human anxieties, from disease and decay to familial conflict and divorce.

When he made Videodrome, Cronenberg was in between his creative breakthrough and his commercial one. He had recently made The Brood, which, in addition to being his most mature and sophisticated horror effort to date, drew on personal pain of the director’s own divorce. It balanced expert technical direction, genuine emotion, and pure terror. A few years after Videodrome, …

David Cronenberg's The Brood Turns 30!

22 May 2009 10:39 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Can a lack of objectivity be a virtue? Art isn’t governed by the same rules as journalism, but the accepted wisdom is that the more adult a piece of art is, the less biased it is allowed to be. In “highbrow” cinema the assumption is that the subject or subjects should be presented in the clearest light possible.

But what about the visceral thrill of an artist letting go of his perspective and indulging emotion, holding a grudge, reveling in id? Thirty years ago, David Cronenberg made his best pure horror film and took the next great leap in his filmmaking with The Brood. The director openly acknowledged that the film was inspired by his acrimonious dissolution of his marriage, but even if he hadn’t, viewers would certainly have noticed that his vision of a divorce with a body count took a less than favorable stance on the sacred institution. …

The Porn Star Turned Movie Star

20 May 2009 5:43 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Plenty of adult film stars have gone mainstream, from the late Marilyn Chambers ("Rabid") to Ginger Lynn Allen ("The Devil's Rejects"), and even Traci Lords (whose long-time public resentment over being labeled an ex-porn star probably isn't helped by her supporting bit in "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"). However, sleepy-eyed sex starlet Sasha Grey -- already one of the hottest properties in her biz today -- may have trumped her predecessors with the central role in a penetrating, thrilling Steven Soderbergh drama that played Sundance. Shot cheaply and quickly last October with no other professional actors and a largely improvised script, "The Girlfriend Experience" follows Manhattan escort Christine, a.k.a. "Chelsea" (Grey) as she tries to juggle her job and a relationship with physical trainer Chris (Chris Santos). By phone, Grey thankfully didn't charge me by the minute as we talked about her "Girlfriend" experience, how she first became a cinephile, …

Will Cronenberg Return to Horror?

23 April 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

With his recent move to more dramatic fare like the Viggo Mortenson vehicles A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, fans may be wondering if Canadian director David Cronenberg has put down the proverbial horror scythe and left behind the low budget thrillers of his younger days (though admittedly, the two aforementioned films still offer plenty of terrifying thrills in their own right).

Though he's presently at work on a Jason Bourne-style spy thriller called The Matarese Circle, likely to star Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington, Cronenberg revealed to MTV that he hasn't necessarily abandoned his horror roots by any stretch of the imagination.

"I would return to the genre if I had a project that I really liked," Cronenberg told MTV News in a recent interview.

The director wouldn't comment on what sort of projects might appeal to him, but he was decidedly emphatic about the ones that wouldn't, …

Marilyn Chambers 1952 - 2009

14 April 2009 1:01 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Marilyn Chambers, probably best known for her role in Behind The Green Door, the first hardcore pornography to go mainstream, has passed away. Chambers had worked as a model and an actress before stumbling into the career that made her one of the great cinematic icons of the '70s. To many film fans, myself included, Chambers will best be remembered as the lead in David Cronenberg's second commercial feature film, Rabid. Chambers plays Rose, a woman who undergoes experimental surgery that inadvertently changes her physiology such that she craves blood, with her victims becoming infectious psychopaths. Cronenberg originally wanted Sissy Spacek for the role, but when that didn't turn out, producer Ivan Reitman suggested Chambers. Reading that back, I realize that Canada was a truly groovy place back then. As great as Spacek would have been, Chambers' combination of wide-eyed naivety and predatory sexuality adds a considerable amount …

Marilyn Chambers, R.I.P.

The trenchcoat crowd will always remember her for her role in "Behind the Green Door." But horror fans will remember her starring role as Rose in David Cronenberg's classic 1977 horror film "Rabid." Marilyn Chambers has passed away at the too-young age of 56. It seems like a lot of obits are turning up on the pages of ESplatter these days, and as the veterans of '70s horror get old, they inevitably pass away. But Chambers was really way too young to pass away. "Rabid" was meant to be her breakthrough movie, pulling her out of seedy adult fare and into horror films. Apparently it wasn't enough to establish her as a legitimate actress. She was convincing in the movie.. …

Pornstar Marilyn Chambers Dead at 56

14 April 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Adult film star Marilyn Chambers, star of hit film "Behind the Green Door," was found dead Sunday at her home in Canyon Country in northern Los Angeles County. She was 56. Her friend Peggy McGinn said Chambers was found by her 17-year-old daughter and the cause of death has not been determined. Chambers starred in the 1972 film "Behind the Green Door," directed by the Mitchell brothers; pic was more widely distributed and attracted a more mainstream audience than the usual adult fare. Born in Providence, Ri, Chambers, whose given name was Marilyn Briggs, was once a model for Ivory Snow, although the soap company quickly ended her contract when she became a porn star. She was among the first porn superstars when the stag films of the 1940s through 1960s gave way to the more polished sex films of the 1970s. After rising to fame with "Behind the Green Door," she …

Noted Clothing-Eschewer Marilyn Chambers Dies at 56

13 April 2009 7:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

You probably knew Marilyn Chambers best as the model who appeared on an Ivory detergent box in the early 1970s, or from her starring roles in Angel of H.E.A.T. and David Cronenberg's Rabid. Or perhaps you remember her as a 2004 vice presidential candidate, running with Charles Jay on the Personal Choice Party ticket and receiving almost a thousand votes.

I'm kidding, of course. You remember Marilyn Chambers as a porn star, titillating millions in such films as Behind the Green Door and Insatiable. She passed away over the weekend, in California, 10 days before her 57th birthday.

Chambers' career began wholesomely, with the Ivory gig and some other modeling jobs, as well as a few small-ish roles in movies, including the 1970 Barbra Streisand/George Segal comedy The Owl and the Pussycat, which sounds like porn but isn't. But it was gettin' naked and doin' it that made her a star, …

Marilyn Chambers was the first porn star I knew by name. My mom's boyfriend had an autographed copy of "My Story," her 'erotobiography,' which wasn't shielded from my young eyes, and I recall being told that she lived in my neighborhood. The latter part was probably false (and/or remembered incorrectly), though she was apparently born in my hometown, so who knows? In any event, I never did see any of her films (I swear!), not even her early non-porn titles, which include Herbert Ross' The Owl and the Pussycat and David Cronenberg's Rabid. The Avn website is reporting that actress Marilyn Chambers, star of both mainstream and adult films passed away Sunday evening at age 57. Chambers was one of the stars of David Cronenberg's 1977 flick Rabid and also appeared in Behind The Green Door and Insatiable.

From the Avn article, "Chambers made 16 movies during the period 1972 to 1986, mostly for the Mitchell Brothers and Caballero Home Video. It was at Caballero that she created the series Marilyn Chambers' Private Fantasies. Chambers made her comeback film for Vca Pictures, Still Insatiable, in 1998. The comeback, however, was short-lived, generating just nine movies, some of which were non-sex roles. Chambers tried her hand at producing as well, creating what was hoped to be a continuing series, Nantucket Housewives, for her own company, Damaged Productions."
