Heat and Logan’s Run Blu-ray Reviews

39 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.

Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

‘Star Wars Gangsta Rap’ Saga Continues With ‘Chronicles’

8 hours ago | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

It started in July of 2003. Star Wars Gangsta Rap hit AtomFilms.com (now just Atom) and captured over 4 millions views for the animated rap parody of the George Lucas masterpiece. It was arguably the most popular of the site's annual Star Wars Fan Film Challenge, a yearly contest (since 2002) sanctioned by Lucasfilm. Gangsta Rap creators at flash animation Bent TV Productions—Jason Brannon, Chris Crawford and Thomas Lee—followed it up in 2004 with Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Special Edition. Now 10 million views and what seems like an online eternity later, MCs Vader, Skywalker, Palpatine and Trooper are back for the latest episode Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Chronicles. Not surprisingly, it's the first finalist announced for Atom's 2010 Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge. Even with the dearth of the Death Star flow, the Ottawa-based Bent TV guys have been busy these past few years, getting hired on by Weird Al »

Dane Cook Wants To Play The Riddler In 'Batman 3'

9 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Just yesterday we revealed the results of last week's "Batman 3" poll, in which readers named The Riddler the villain they'd most like to see in the next installment of the Batman movie franchise. Now comes word from actor/comedian Dane Cook that Batman's question-marked nemesis is exactly the comic book character he'd like to play, given the chance.

"I love the new Dark Knight series and 'Batman Begins,'" Cook told MTV News when asked if there were any comic book movie characters he has his eye on. "If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that."

"When they were making the new one and they were doing The Joker, I always thought it [should be] kind of like 'The Crow'—having that dark element but still comedic," said Cook of the type of Riddler he'd »

Hallmark Offering Really Nerdy Christmas Tree Ornaments

14 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Well, it's that time of the year again -- time to wait until the very last minute to buy presents for your loved ones in order to solidify the fact that you'll be waiting on insanely long lines next to people who don't shower and like to scream at their misbehaving kids about once every 10 seconds. Or at least that's what I'll be doing this year. One thing I always look forward to, though, is heading out on a cold winter's night to purchase a way-too-expensive Christmas tree for my living room ... and then decorating it while consuming some nice tasty beverages that may or may not be of the alcoholic variety.

But when you're a movie geek like me, you want to decorate that tree with tons of really random movie references so that your family can come over and be all like, "Um, is that the car from Ghostbusters hanging on your tree? »

'V' Returns To ABC Tonight In 'There Is No Normal Anymore'

14 hours ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Did you tune in last week for "V"? As a child of the '80s, I can still remember that Marc Singer-starring classic series. The scene where the visitors first touch down on Earth to the strains of John Williams' "Star Wars" score is forever burned into my consciousness. Those lizards scared the crap out of me though, like most other things I saw at that age.

The "V"-boot (get it?!) got off to a very promising start last Tuesday, essentially distilling the key beats of the original miniseries into a single hour. And since you all enjoyed Josh Wigler's recap of episode one (another one is incoming tonight), we're going to be supplementing it each week with a small gallery of images from the evening's episode. Click the pic below to check out our preview of tonight's, entitled "There Is No Normal Anymore."

Merchandise swag: Star Wars Trooper radio alarm clock

19 hours ago | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

When it comes to movie merchandise, we all have to bow down at worship at the feet of George Lucas. The bearded film producer/ writer/ director/ blah blah blah revolutionised the licensing of film tie-in goodies with his space saga, Star Wars and the film franchise continues to deliver incredibly innovative and fun treasures. And we just love this radio alarm clock modelled after a trooper figure from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is certain to add some sci-fi chic to your early morning routine. What better way to get yourself out of bed on those dark and cold winter mornings? »

11/09/09: How I Met Your Mother – “Rough Patch”

20 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Never underestimate the power of the written word. Words have the power to change the world, inspire people, and influence monumental decisions. It doesn’t matter if it’s an internationally bestselling novel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poem or a pro-bono television article on an online entertainment magazine.

Last week in my review of How I Met Your Mother, I ranted heavily about how a faltering subplot between characters Robin and Barney was wringing the lifeblood from the show and destroying both characters. I claimed if the writers or producers didn’t take immediate action, these problems would sound the death knell for the series.

So imagine my surprise when, one week after writing said article, the show did away with both the carcinogenic storyline and alteration of characters. Most likely this was the plan all along, as television shows are both written and filmed months before their airdates. However, just »

Glimpse Star Trek's Abandoned Mos Eisley Cantina Scene

9 November 2009 10:30 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I loved Jj Abrams Star Trek reboot, but if there.s a bad scene in the movie.s Kirk.s rather lame chase sequence with an alien monster on an ice planet. It just doesn.t fit in with anything else that.s going on in the film and, maybe there.s a reason for that. Originally, they had something else in mind. IO9 has concept art from the sequence they.d originally planned for Jim Kirk after being marooned by his shipmates. The planet was supposed to be a desert planet, and more than that a populated desert planet where he.d encounter alien traders and smugglers. Think Mos Eisley from Star Wars and that seems to be the direction they were thinking in. Check out the concept (more at IO9) Pretty great right? Infinitely superior to the somewhat lame, CGI monster Kirk encounters instead. Imagine if he.d »

Watch This: Extended Family-Focused TV Spot for Avatar

9 November 2009 10:32 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Where wonder lives, and adventure rules!" You have got to see this crazy new TV spot! Fox put together a more family friendly TV spot for James Cameron's Avatar that sells it much more like Star Wars or an animated space adventure for kids (or something like that). At first I thought this was kind of cheesy, but actually, it's kinda fun to see. So far all the marketing for Avatar has been very epic and focused towards the Cameron fanboys, but I love seeing a whole different side of Pandora this time. I doubt it'll convert anyone, except for kids and their parents, but still. I just hope this is truly the "greatest adventure of all-time!" Watch the family-focused TV spot for James Cameron's Avatar: Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine on the planet Pandora who, as an Avatar - a human mind in an alien body »

Screen Queens: Sally Bowles

8 November 2009 8:27 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!

Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. You can get almost as much pleasure out of Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson's performances, »

Birthday Suits: Immortal Beloveds

8 November 2009 6:27 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Who needs holidays? Make your own with the birthdays of movie people.

Parker, Oleg and Vlad the Impaler (as interpreted by Gary Oldman)

Today's Birthdays 11/08

1431 Vlad the Impaler would have turned 578 years old today if not for that stake through the heart. To be accurate, his exact birthday is unknown but sometimes he's listed on this date which probably has something to do with...

1847 Bram Stoker who wrote the original Dracula, which gave Vlad the immortality that he had mythically already won as the original nosferatu... vampyr. The cinema loves him harder and deeper than Lucy Harker ever could.

1900 Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind. She didn't have to impale anyone or renounce heaven to achieve immortality. She just had to write one mammoth book. The movie based on her novel is still the highest grossing film of all time when adjusted for inflation. One of only four films »

Review: Stargate Universe - Earth

7 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S01E07) With the Ioa and Stargate Command planning a risky rescue mission aboard The Destiny, Eli, Chloe and Young used the communication stones to head back to Earth and... indulge in a little drinking and sex!

The crew faced death again, Col. Telford came aboard to annoy everyone again, and Rush hovered on the fringe, skulking and whining about the military's plan of action. Again.

Still, I really enjoyed how everything played out this week. Finally Eli, aka the Star Wars-referencing funny guy, was given more to do than make jokes and pine for Chloe. David Blue really sold the scenes with Eli talking to his mother. I sensed a real longing from Eli to want to take care of his mom and prove himself to her out of love and respect. It was a good idea to have him pose as a co-worker. That way, we got »

Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review

6 November 2009 10:56 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.

Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

Is The Verizon Droid The Droid You're Looking For... Or One Of These 'Star Wars' Droids Instead?

6 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Verizon Droid is not the droid you're looking for. Sure, it's probably a very cool phone — the folks at Wired are talking about how it legitimately gives the iPhone a run for its money, despite a handful of minor grievances — but I must insist that you hold out for other droids.

I know what you're asking — "What droids are we looking for, Wigler?" — and the answer, of course, takes us back a long time ago to a galaxy far, far away. Why settle for a simple handheld device when you can wait it out just a little bit longer for some bona fide "Star Wars" era technology?

I firmly believe* that we're not far off from making official contact with the folks on Coruscant and Alderaan — okay, maybe not Alderaan — which will thereby give us access to the droids we're looking for. If you're not as patient as I am, »

More 'New Moon' Stills Surface As November 20 Creeps Closer

6 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I envy you Twilighters, I really do. As a lifelong "Star Wars" geek, I remember well the anticipation leading up to the release of the prequel trilogy. Sure, those later episodes didn't please me as a fan in the same way that the originals did and continue to do, but the mounting excitement, the event surrounding each release, it was a hoot. So I envy that you get to go through all of that excitement-- it makes for fun times.

Since I can also relate to the joy of seeing most of the movie in clips and stills before it even hits theaters, I'm here to bring you the latest photo gallery update. A whole new batch of "New Moon" stills for you to enjoy, roughly a dozen of them. Just click the image below to be magically transported to our newly updated flipbook gallery.

Does 'A Christmas Carol' fall in the uncanny valley?

6 November 2009 1:09 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I've been seeing the posters and ads for A Christmas Carol eh-heeverywhere recently, and it gives me the creeps like whoa. Because from where I sit, this version is deep, deep into the uncanny valley. How can this image not give you the chills? Geesh: For the uninitiated, the uncanny valley is that weird zone where humanoid characters go from cute and adorable to scary and off putting. Wall-e? Adorbs. That thing? See you in my nightmares. We like stuff to have human characteristics up to a point, but then those characteristics get weird and we stop liking it -- »

Fan Film Friday: ‘Titular Movie Lines’

6 November 2009 12:15 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

We here at The Flickcast are fans of just about all films, but some of us around the office still get tickled when we hear the titular line in a film thrown out. Many comedy series have spoofed this concept, such as Upright Citizens Brigade with “I’m sick of all these Star Wars!” or Family Guy with “That’s why they call me Superman 4: The Quest For Peace” but nobody has ever gone to the length’s of this week’s Fan Film Friday Creator.

The cool cats over at VideoGum put together a pretty impressive compilation of just about every film that uses the title in dialogue. From Fried Green Tomatoes to Minority Report, this compilation has it all. It makes you wonder if the writers are being clever with that line, or actually really lazy.
