Lucas To Turn Star Wars Films Into 3-D Features

24 July 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is a major advocate of theatrical 3-D films, has disclosed that George Lucas is investing in a technology that could turn all of his Star Wars movies into 3-D features that could be given new releases. Katzenberg told the website ComingSoon.net that he now has the technical resources to begin the conversion process. Previous attempts to turn 2-D movies into 3-D have produced mixed results and reactions -- mostly negative -- but Katzenberg remarked in the interview that Lucas "isn't going to put a product out, I think, that isn't anything other than first rate."

Two New Commercials for 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'

21 July 2008 10:56 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Perhaps I've missed all the talk this summer about Star Wars: The Clone Wars, or perhaps there just isn't that much talk. The point is, I've had more people contact me about some also-rans of the summer than what I think is an exciting new direction for the storied George Lucas universe. Maybe the people who would've contacted me with questions and comments are already in line, though; Star Wars fans like to do that.

I sincerely doubt that's the case, so the only thing I'm left to assume is that, for some reason, people have cooled to this animated concept of telling the events between Episode II and Episode III. Perhaps the people who would normally be excited have already seen the first version of The Clone Wars, a TV series that was on the air five years ago, and their expectations aren't that high.

And some of the

"The Clone Wars" -- It's Ok Believe Again!

16 July 2008 12:44 PM, PDT | From McTelevision.blogspot.com | See recent McTelevision news

Los Angeles -- Claiming "Star Wars" fandom used to mean something, so some of us once believed. The George Lucas faithful used to think were in some way different from, say, "Star Trek" geeks or "Battlestar" enthusiasts or, as several people here have referred to them, "those 'Stargate' people."

Then came the prequels and the subsequent blitz of "Star Wars"-related toys, products, clothing, drinks and frozen dinners. So saturated is our with "Star Wars" related products and gimmickry that these days, calling yourself a "Star Wars" fan is about as special as telling someone that you're a water drinking enthusiast or that you're partial to walking.

Some of us, though, are harder core that the average lightsaber swingers. You'll recognize us by our scowls at the mention of Hayden Christensen's name. Be careful if you ask us how we're doing, because we might respond with a diatribe about

Two New 'Clone Wars' Posters

15 July 2008 4:01 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Tracking the progress of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been an interesting undertaking. At first, there was no movie, just a series about the years between Episode II and Episode III. We'd seen another series cover the same ground, but this one appears to be a much bigger deal.

The Clone Wars will be on multiple networks this fall, and after that announcement came earlier this year, we heard the news that prior to the series premiere, LucasFilm would essentially string together the first few episodes into a feature film. The movie is coming out on August 15th, and up until a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't sure how much attention Lucas and Warner Bros. wanted this to get outside of the Star Wars universe set, meaning anyone who doesn't have Wookiepedia set as their home page.

But after I heard it was going to immediately be a wide release,

Fiennes Trumps Ledger As Top Movie Villain

15 July 2008 11:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Ralph Fiennes' Lord Voldemort character in the Harry Potter films has been named the best movie villain of all time - beating Heath Ledger's The Joker into fifth place.

Ledger's performance in new Batman sequel The Dark Knight, the last movie he completed before his death in January, has been lauded by critics and tipped for an Oscar nomination.

But editors of Moviefone rank him behind Fiennes; James Earl Jones and Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader; Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West and Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in the onscreen evil stakes.

A Moviefone editor explains the decision to crown Voldemort the most dastardly, "He is the most powerful dark wizard to ever wave a wand. What's more, he schemes to dominate the whole world. Without his slithering presence, would J.K. Rowling be the best-selling author of all time? The answer, a resounding "No."

The top ten is as follows:

1: Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter - Ralph Fiennes

2: Darth Vader, Star Wars -James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen

3. Wicked Witch Of The West, The Wizard Of Oz - Margaret Hamilton

4. Hannibal Lecter, Silence Of The Lambs - Anthony Hopkins

5. Joker, The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger

6. Goldfinger, Goldfinger - Gert Frobe

7. Chigurh, No Country For Old Men - Javier Bardem

8. Hans Gruber, Die Hard - Alan Rickman

9: Max Cady, Cape Fear - Robert De Niro

10: Queen, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves - Lucille La Verne.

Ted's Top 10 Thought They Were Original!

4 July 2008 9:14 AM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

Low-budget filmmakers often regurgitate plotlines to make a buck or two on whatever's hot. Look at the 1974 blaxploitation flick Abby (a blatant Exorcist rip-off) or the recent Transmorphers (which needs no further clarification). Unless it's a sanctioned remake, they rarely cite their source material… and even when they're blatant about it, the casual moviegoer can pick up on what The DaVinci Treasure is trying to cash in on. Let's face it, most of these folks aren't claiming to be innovative.

But what happens when they do claim to be original? On top of that, what happens when the tables are turned and Hollywood rips off lesser-known (or simply outdated) features? It doesn't just happen… it happens all the time – especially in genre films.

Just because their names are Ridley Scott, Michael Bay, and Sam Raimi doesn't mean they shouldn't cite their source material. "Homages" my adorable butt. These are rip-offs,

Lucas To Take A Turn On Broadway?

18 June 2008 9:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Star Wars creator George Lucas is planning to lend his directorial talents to a Broadway musical with the help of comedienne Whoopi Goldberg, according to reports.

Goldberg, who has made a number of appearances on the New York stage, is talking to Lucas' motion picture and visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic about a collaboration on musical Bricktop - Queen of the Night, reports the New York Daily News.

The musical centres around a fabled Parisian cabaret owner Ada 'Bricktop' Smith.

A source tells the newspaper, "They're talking about playing with Cubist images and jazz from the (1920's)," adding that Lucas "could do things Broadway has never seen before".

Lucas' Daughter Is A Fighter

3 June 2008 5:47 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Star Wars creator George Lucas' daughter Amanda made her martial arts debut in New Zealand on Saturday - fighting under the name Powerhouse.

The 27-year-old was beaten in the mixed martial arts bout by Kiwi Nicole Kavanagh - part of a Princesses of Pain team event between America and Australasia.

Footage of the fights will feature in a forthcoming documentary about the formation of an international women's fighting league, according to Stuff.nz.

Promoter Belinda Dunne says of Lucas' involvement, "(Amanda's) got the heart of a fighter.

"She's got some skills in every area. She does the tough yards and she doesn't give up. She's got a lot of strength in her punch.

"She's staying in a hostel with six other girls. Eating the same food. She has not once been a prima donna about it.

"Within her team-mates, none of them really give a crap (about her links to fame)."

Lucas turned to fighting after trying her hand at acting - she appeared in the first three Star Wars movies - and a stint as a hip-hop dance teacher.

Ford rules out Han Solo return

However, he said he has no desire to reprise the role which made him a star in 1977, saying: "Han Solo isn't interesting to me. Ford Vows Never To Return To Star Wars

27 May 2008 12:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Harrison Ford has vowed he will never reprise his role as Han Solo - the character which shot him to global superstardom in Star Wars.

The 65-year-old actor is currently basking in the success of his latest movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - which has become a major box office hit 17 years after his first appearance as the intrepid archeologist.

But although Ford is grateful for the career boost afforded to him by Star Wars when he was a struggling actor, he would never consider returning to the sc-fi franchise as the character is too dull.

He says, "Han Solo isn't interesting to me. It's a very narrow sort of utility in the story and it was great for my career and it was fun to play at the time but I wouldn't go back there again. Those pants!

"There are characters that it seems to me are worth re-exploring given that the story advances your understanding of the character, deepens your relationship to that character and takes you into an area that's new and unexpected.

"Some characters are decidedly one off kind of characters. Some characters don't outlive the movie."

Studio Estimate: Paramount Reports a Healthy $25M Opening Day for 'Indiana Jones'!

22 May 2008 7:23 PM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

Friday 8:00 a.m. (Pacific): Early box office results for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are very good, but shy of the meteoric predictions by many box office analysts, including yours truly. This morning Paramount has reported that the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg collaboration, the first Indiana Jones sequel in 19 years, grabbed an estimated $25 million on Thursday. That is well off the $50 million haul enjoyed by Lucas's Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith on Thursday, May 19, 2005. Crystal Skull was thought to have a chance to surpass Revenge of the Sith's $172.8 million five-day record, but that now becomes a very uphill climb.

Ford: 'I'm An Autograph Hunter's Dream'

15 May 2008 12:10 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Harrison Ford has hailed himself Hollywood best autograph signer - because he only refuses requests for his signature when he's urinating or having sex.

The actor is worshipped by devotees of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, and he insists he loves his fans - and would do anything to accommodate their requests.

Ford explains, "I'm as gentle as a lamb. I even give autographs while having lunch. The only time you shouldn't ask for an autograph is when I'm standing in front of a urinal. Or while I'm having sex."

Lucas not interested in post Vader films

7 May 2008 2:16 PM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

George Lucas has said that he is not interested in making Star Wars movies set after Return of the Jedi.

Lucas told the Los Angeles Times: "Whatever it is that happens afterward, that isn't the core Star Wars story that I like to tell. There really isn't any story to tell there.

"It's been covered in the books and video games and comic books, which are things I think are incredibly creative but that I don't really have anything to do with other than being the person who built the sandbox they're playing in."

He added: "I get asked all the time, 'What happens after Return of the Jedi?,' and there really is no answer for that.

Hamill Jealous Of Ford's Success

29 April 2008 5:26 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Mark Hamill was jealous when his Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford went on to carve out a more successful film career, according to fellow castmate Carrie Fisher.

Hamill played lead character Luke Skywalker in the hit film series and Fisher is convinced the actor was sure the role would lead to a long, prosperous stint in the movie industry.

But Hamill subsequently failed to score any more high profile films, while Ford went on to become an A-list star.

And Fisher admits Hamill was always disappointed he didn't achieve the same.

She says, "(There was) some jealousy. Harrison had this huge film career by the second or third film, that was tough for Mark.

"He was like, 'This wasn't supposed to happen - it's the adventures of Luke Skywalker.'"

Fisher 'Taped Into' Star Wars Bikini

29 April 2008 5:26 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Carrie Fisher had to be taped into the famous gold bikini she wore in 1983's Star Wars epic Return Of The Jedi - to stop her suffering an embarrassing costume malfunction.

Producers on the sci-fi epic were so worried about Fisher's breasts falling out of the skimpy bathing costume on set, they firmly taped the garment to her body.

She says, "I had to tape them (my breasts) down, because there's no underwear in space. George (Lucas, creator) knows that for a fact.

"That bikini didn't move, so you could see all the way to Florida."

And when asked where the famous outfit has ended up, she jokes, "George has it - he wears it all the time."
