John Travolta turned down the chance to go into space on Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic space ship - because he can't take the necessary time off to train to be an astronaut.

Plane-fanatic Travolta was approached and asked if he'd like to take a seat on one of Virgin's first space flights, scheduled for next year, but the Grease star was forced to decline the tempting offer - because it would cost him too much in lost earnings.

Travolta explains, "I think I would like it. I've been approached several times to go up into the space shuttle and do these other smaller programs (than Virgin).

"But it takes about six months of training to actually do this kind of thing, so I told them, if they could subsidise me, I would do it." …

Travolta And Preston Open Up About Jett's Death

9 November 2009 8:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston are gradually coming to terms with the tragic loss of their son Jett with the help of daily Scientology counselling sessions.

The grieving Hollywood stars lost their 16-year-old boy in January after he suffered a seizure during a family vacation in the Bahamas.

Travolta was forced to relive the horror of the incident as he gave evidence against paramedic Tarino Lightbourne, who treated Jett, and his lawyer Pleasant Bridgewater, a former Bahamas senator, during their extortion trial in October.

The case was declared a mistrial after Bahamian politician Picewell Forbes prematurely announced the verdict to the media before the jury had officially come to a decision.

The Travoltas returned to the spotlight last week (ends06Nov09) as they went back to work to support their new release Old Dogs, opening up about their family tragedy for the first time in an interview with members of the U.S. press.

The Grease star admits their dedication to the controversial religion has played a big part in helping them overcome their grief, reports USA Today newspaper.

He says, "We've been working very hard every day as a family to heal. We have our own way of doing it, and it (Scientology) has been helping. You need your friends a lot in times like that."

Preston reveals they regularly attend counselling sessions and admits the show of support from friends and fans has been overwhelming: "(The) outpouring of love from, really, worldwide has been extraordinary. It's been our friends, our family, our church. We partake in spiritual counselling pretty much daily.

"It's a tricky thing. Sometimes, something that's right for the moment is not right the next day. Being with people who are important to you, being with people that you love, I think that's what has primarily helped us the most. Sometimes, being alone, too."

The couple felt it was time to return to work to promote Old Dogs because the stars wanted to celebrate their nine-year-old daughter Ella's acting debut in the movie.

Travolta adds, "We decided it was Ok to come out and promote, to introduce her to the world and to give her a beautiful future in film."

A Bahamas judge has ordered a retrial in the extortion case, which is expected to take place next year. …

Travolta Has A 'Heavy Heart' Over Son's Death

22 October 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

John Travolta is still struggling to overcome the death of his son Jett - but the tragedy has brought his family closer together.

The Grease star and his wife Kelly Preston's 16-year-old son died suddenly after suffering a seizure during a family holiday in the Bahamas in January.

The couple's loss has made the Travoltas cherish their life together with their nine-year-old daughter Ella, according to a family friend.

Travolta's longtime pal, Ronnie Zupancic, says, "He's got a heavy heart. There is a hole. They think about Jett every day, they never stop. It doesn't wear off. Jett is still with them. It's like it (tragedy) was yesterday. They recognise the fragility of life, and they all hold each other a little tighter now."

The stars' attorney Mike Ossi reveals the couple is putting all their efforts into spending time with Ella and concentrating on the release of movie Old Dogs, which stars all three of them, to help them cope.

He says, "They are spending all their time together. It's Ella's first film and it's a family affair. She is every excited, but John and Kelly are even more excited. They are very proud."

Meanwhile, the family has to relive the events surrounding Jett's death after an extortion trial in the Bahamas was declared a mistrial on Wednesday.

The Travoltas were targeted in an alleged blackmail plot by paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamas senator Pleasant Bridgewater following the tragedy.

The suspects face charges of conspiracy to extort $25 million (£17.2 million) from the couple, amid allegations they threatened to release a Refusal of Treatment/Transportation form, which had been signed by Travolta, to the media.

Travolta and Preston were left "disappointed" after the case was declared a mistrial after a juror allegedly leaked information about the jury's decision to local politicians.

Travolta will now have to relive the pain of his son's tragic death for a second time in front of a new jury when the case is retried. …

Travolta 'Disappointed' With Alleged Juror Misconduct

22 October 2009 11:56 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

John Travolta has expressed his "disappointment" after his long-running extortion case in the Bahamas was declared a mistrial.

The Grease star and his wife Kelly Preston were targeted in an alleged blackmail plot by paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamas senator Pleasant Bridgewater following the death of their 16-year-old son Jett in the resort in January.

The suspects faced charges of conspiracy to extort $25 million (£17.2 million) from the couple, amid allegations they threatened to release a Refusal of Treatment/Transportation form, which had been signed by Travolta, to the media.

The Nassau court jury began deliberations on Wednesday and was expected to return a verdict later this week (ends23Oct09) - but Senior Justice Anita Allen called off the case on Wednesday night.

It is alleged a juror leaked information about the jury's decision to local politicians, prompting lawmaker Picewell Forbes to announce at a Progressive Liberal Party (Plp) convention that ex-party member Bridgewater was "a free woman".

Alex Storr, a Plp official, claimed Forbes had misspoken and apologised on behalf of the party, but Allen decided to declare a mistrial.

Travolta is upset at the outcome of the trial but insists he will do whatever it takes for justice to prevail.

In a statement released to Entertainment Tonight, Travolta's representative says, "We are disappointed to hear about the alleged juror misconduct since we know that the Bahamian government, the court, the other jurors and John Travolta as the victim want to have this matter adjudicated through the judicial system.

"Mr. Travolta has and will continue to cooperate with the Bahamian authorities in the prosecution of the defendants for extortion."

Travolta will now have to relive the pain of his son's tragic death for a second time in front of a new jury when the case is retried at a later date. …

Olivia Newton-john is grateful she found fame in the 1970s - because she doubts she could handle the amount of attention Britney Spears receives now.

The 61 year old was propelled to stardom after her turn in 1978 movie Grease and graced the covers of magazines worldwide.

Newton-John refused to take her pin-up status seriously at the time, and claims the decision kept her grounded.

But the actress feels sorry for Spears, who found fame as a teenager in the late 1990s - because the amount of press coverage sexy stars receive nowadays is unprecedented.

She tells Britain's Attitude magazine, "The poor girl. She has lived in a time where the paparazzi reign and we didn't have that problem at all. We'd have occasional intrusion, you know I had a few incidents, but it was nothing like it is now.

"I don't think you realise it (early fame) until you look back because it doesn't really feel like reality in the time. I never really took it too seriously, which is healthy." …

A Few Good Men In Travolta 'Extortion' Case

7 October 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

John Travolta's lawyer stunned a Bahamas courtroom by channelling Jack Nicholson as he took to the stand on Tuesday - shouting out the actor's famous "You can't handle the truth" catchphrase from A Few Good Men.

Michael McDermott was cross-examined by attorney Murrio Ducille, who is defending ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne and former politician Pleasant Bridgewater against allegations they plotted to extort millions of dollars from Travolta.

The pair is accused of trying to blackmail the Grease star and his wife Kelly Preston for at least $20 million (£13.3 million) by threatening to release private documents surrounding the death of their son Jett.

On Monday jurors at the Nassau courthouse were shown video footage taken by McDermott in which he met with Lightbourne while Bridgewater was conferenced in on a phone's loudspeaker.

Under cross-examination, McDermott was accused by Ducille of trying to entrap his clients by filming their meeting.

The attorney said, "I suggest, Mr. McDermott, that you sought to give birth to an extortion plot but it was stillborn."

McDermott then drew gasps and laughter from several jurors by replying: "And I suggest that you can't handle the truth."

Secret Tapes Screened For Travolta Jurors

The paramedic accused of trying to extort money from John Travolta following the death of his son wanted to become the "Bahamian Robin Hood", according to secret footage viewed by jurors on Monday.

The clips, screened to the Nassau jury, showed the actor's attorney Michael McDermott speaking to ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne, while his lawyer, politician Pleasant Bridgewater, can be heard on the phone loudspeaker.

Lightbourne and Bridgewater are accused of trying to extort millions of dollars from the Grease star by threatening to sell stories to the media about his son Jett's death during a family vacation earlier this year.

In secret footage filmed at McDermott's hotel room, Bridgewater can be heard telling the attorney that Lightbourne wants at least $20 million (£13.3 million) in return for keeping private documents out of the press.

Prosecutors claim the footage shows Lightbourne wanted to hand out the cash to Bahamas poor residents.

In the tape, he can be heard telling McDermott, "I was poor all my life, you know, me and my family. We struggling all my life. I wanted to do things for charity all of my life. I assume I'm in a position now, not only for me to help the less fortunate out there - so that figure ($20 million) just come to my head."

McDermott then quips, "You're a Bahamian Robin Hood!"

McDermott last week revealed the defendants approached him with the bribery plot after the 16-year-old suffered a seizure.

He described receiving a phone call from Bridgewater on 12 January - 10 days after Jett died - threatening to release Travolta's signed Refusal of Treatment/Transportation form to the press if their demands for cash weren't met.

Bahamas authorities then set up hidden cameras in McDermott's hotel room to film meetings with Lightbourne.

Travolta Paramedic Threatened To Leak Stories To Media

30 September 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The paramedic accused of attempting to extort millions from John Travolta threatened to sell false stories to the press suggesting the Grease star was to blame for the death of his son Jett, a Bahamas court has heard.

Travolta returned to the stand in a Nassau courtroom on Wednesday to testify against former Bahamian Senator Pleasant Bridgewater and paramedic Tarino Lightbourne, who are charged with conspiracy to extort $25 million (£17.2 million) from the grieving family following Jett's death in January.

The 16 year old suffered a fatal seizure while on a family vacation on the Caribbean island.

During direct examination, Travolta told the court how his friend and employee Ronald Zupancic had alerted him to the bribery plot over a medical document the actor had signed after requesting the paramedics drive the family to the airport. The actor initially believed it would be faster to fly Jett to a hospital in Florida, but subsequently changed his mind.

The Refusal of Treatment/Transportation form releases the medics from liability.

Travolta said, "(Zupancic) was upset. He said that there was a threat and a demand of money that Mr. McDermott, my attorney, had alerted him to with a release paper that I had signed in the Bahamas.

"I spoke to my attorney, and he needed to investigate the matter. I gave him permission to go to the authorities based on the information he gave me."

When prosecutor Bernard Turner asked what would happen if the Travoltas snubbed Bridgewater and Lightbourne's demand, Travolta replied, "If it were not met, then certain stories connected to that document would be sold to the press. They were stories that implied that the death of my son was intentional - that I was culpable in some way."

The two defendants have pleaded not guilty. The trial continues. …

Travolta Evidence Up In Flames

28 September 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A key piece of evidence in the John Travolta extortion trial has been destroyed by one of the suspects, according to police.

Paramedic Tarino Lightbourn and former Bahamian senator Pleasant Bridgewater are currently on trial in Nassau, accused of attempting to secure a multi-million payment from Travolta for the return of a form the star signed just before his son Jett was pronounced dead in January.

The 16 year old died after suffering a seizure during a family holiday on the Caribbean island.

The document at the centre of the case is a Refusal of Treatment/Transportation form, which the Grease actor signed after requesting paramedics drive the family to the airport so he could fly Jett to a hospital in Florida.

Travolta initially believed it would be faster to travel back to the U.S. than take Jett to a local hospital, but subsequently changed his mind. The teen was pronounced dead at the medical centre.

Cops searched Bridgewater's law office after her arrest on 22 January, but when detectives failed to find the original document, she told officers "she had already destroyed it", according to a police report filed by Sergeant Deborah Thompson on 30 January.

When quizzed further about the missing form, the report states, "She replied that she only had a copy, but after she noticed that the incident was about to explode, she used a candle at her home and lit the document on fire and flush (sic) the ashes in the toilet bowl at her residence."

The candle was found by police, along with tiny remnants of what is believed to be the document: "Whilst at her residence, she directed officers to a white candle in a glass, which when examined had what appeared to be ashes in it."

Lightbourn and Bridgewater were reportedly caught on camera thrashing out a deal with Travolta's lawyer.
