What are the Top 10 Most Significant Movie Developments of the Past Decade?

13 minutes ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I just received a press release from a PR firm representing Hollywood.com with what they have determined to be the "Top 10 Most Significant Movie Developments of the Past Decade" and it's an interesting list to ponder and outside of a couple of the selections I agree with most all of it. However, it is quite obvious the biggest influence over the last decade has been the Internet, but before adding any more comments, here's the list as determined by Hollywood.com: The evolution of social media (Twitter, blogs) to propel box office numbers The advancement of Computer-Generated Imaging The rise of 3D films and IMAX theaters The creation of Netflix, as well as the ability to download movies before they are available on DVD or Blu-Ray The launch of online ticket sales The major influx of movies based on comics Fantasy books made into major feature films including The Lord of the Rings »

Peter Jackson and Stanley Tucci Talk The Lovely Bones

21 hours ago | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Dread Central hit The Lovely Bones press conference in Beverly Hills, CA, where director Peter Jackson, along with the film’s stars Stanley Tucci, Saoirse Ronan, Rose Mclver, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz, talked up their cinematic incarnation of Alice Sebold’s best-selling novel.

Centering around lead character ‘Susie Salmon’ (Ronan) who is murdered by child-rapist and killer ‘Mr. Harvey’ (played in the film by Tucci), The Lovely Bones’ source material is at times a challenging read in its portrayal of violence, particularly in the first chapter. The tome though at its core focuses on the effect of the crime on the victim and her relatives, as Susie watches them from a hallucinogenic limbo while struggling with her feelings of vengeance towards her killer and her empathy toward the plight of those that remain. Jackson, whose previous efforts include the rather fantastical The Lord of the Rings trilogy and 2005’s King Kong, »

Lord Of The Rings & Kanye's Debut Top Best Of The Decade List

4 December 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and Kanye West's The College Dropout album have been named the Best Movie and Best Album of the past decade in a new magazine poll.

Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic beat Brokeback Mountain, Gladiator and The Dark Knight to top Entertainment Weekly's end-of-the-decade film hit list, while the rapper's 2004 debut landed at number one ahead of Jay-z's The Blueprint and Kid A by Radiohead.

The Sopranos beat Lost and comedy news show The Daily Show to claim the Best TV Show honour.

But boy wizard Harry Potter topped them all in the publication's overall poll - the magical literary character landed at number one on the Best of the Decade list, which counts down the 100 greatest songs, albums, films, TV shows and episodes, characters, trends, books and stars from the past 10 years. »

Peter Jackson on The Lovely Bones and Tintin

3 December 2009 11:03 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

There are traces of Peter Jackson’s camp-horror roots in his latest film, an adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones. They’re in his vertiginous camera work, his extreme fish-eye closeups, his hazy dreamscapes, his over-crisp sound cues, his flair for the lurid, and his uncanny knack for suspense. But other than that, it’s hard to find a thematic element that connects his early works—such as his gross-out gore-fest Bad Taste or his depraved-and-diseased muppet movie, Meet the Feebles—with the story of Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), a bright-eyed 14-year-old girl who watches over her family through the dreamlike prism of the afterlife after she is murdered by a pedophilic maniac (Stanley Tucci). To ask Jackson, the one thing all his movies share is simply that they are movies he wanted to see. You know how when you read a book you imagine what the movie would look like? »

Viggo Mortensen Plays A Worried Father In His Film ‘The Road’

The 51-year-old actor plays a father struggling to protect his son as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world in new movie 'The Road' and he admits he could relate to the fear of not being able to protect your offspring. The star - who has a 21-year-old son, Henry, with his ex-wife Exene Cervenka – said: “You worry about your child’s future. You’re like, ‘What if I’m away from my infant son or daughter for a few hours, do I trust someone else to take care of them?’ "Then, later in life, you're more concerned about whether you’ll be around anymore to help your children when they’re out of the nest. This movie just takes all those concerns to an extreme.” Viggo – who is best known for his role as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings' film series »

Sundance 2010 Competition Lineup Arrives, And Here Are Some Highlights

2 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I've been fortunate enough to attend Sundance Film Festival for the past two years, and it's quite an experience. I tend to spend my time there gorging on as many movies as possible. In my two trips and 10 cumulative days spent in Park City, Ut, I've seen roughly 50 screenings. Not even as press really; writing would consume too much time.

Sundance 2010 is going to be different: either I'll be here manning the blog or out in Utah seeing only the occasional movie while participating in MTV's ongoing coverage. And manning the blog, of course. After looking at the competition lineup, just released today, I'm very much hoping that I'll be able to attend. There are some cool-looking movies in contention, and many more yet to be announced that aren't competing. Hit the jump to check out some of the highlights and then head over to the Sundance website for the full list. »

Beautiful Creatures Go to Warner Brothers

Twilight. The Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter. "True Blood". "The Vampire Diaries." There are so many book series out there looking to attain the level of success that those titles have had transitioning to both the big and the small screens. Warner Brothers is about to start banking on another one -- Beautiful Creatures.

Variety reports that Warner has acquired Beautiful Creatures, the first of a five-novel series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (which drops in book stores tomorrow), with Richard Lagravanese writing and directing the first feature film.

“I love supernatural stories that have well drawn mythologies, and I liked that this book has all the basic elements of a classic first love story with a supernatural layer over it,” Lagravanese tells Variety. “So the first time they hear the words boyfriend and girlfriend, they accidentally overhear each other telepathically. The Hobbit To Shoot Summer 2010

30 November 2009 5:56 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Peter Jackson announced to Movie Reporter.net that Guillermo Del Toro’s The Hobbit will commence shooting in the summer of 2010. He revealed, too, the script has gone through its second draft with a finish date for next month, or January. This is a minor setback as production was to begin in March. Interestingly, the budget has yet to be sorted, so does this mean The Hobbit is stuck in development hell? Not likely. If there was a dead cert for a blockbuster, then, The Hobbit is it.

Being split into two episodes, with the first arriving, hopefully, in December 2011 and the other in December 2012, Filmshaft will be following this production closely. The Lord of the Rings trilogy earned billions and was an artistic undertaking like no other. Peter Jackson will remain on board as writer and producer. One thing is certain, a return to Middle Earth, will have audience expectation going through the roof. »

Hobbit Filming Next Summer... Hopefully!

30 November 2009 2:44 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has told the German site Movie Reporter that the The Hobbit films will not start shooting until at least halfway through next year.

Questioned whilst on promotional duties for The Lovely Bones, the Tolkien adapter-extraordinaire said that production is pending both a final draft of the script and that all-important studio green-light.

Jackson will not be taking the helm for these films which represent a sort of prequel to the Rings trilogy but instead has drafted in fellow fantasy-monger Guillermo Del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy) to do the honours.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Pictures

27 November 2009 12:10 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

With seven novels, it’s difficult to tell just how far the movies will take the The Chronicles of Narnia series. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third film and the first with 20th Century Fox. They’ve been decent films but haven’t been treated with the same care as The Lord of the Rings. But the films, at least, are bound to be fantastic looking, since only now can the technology properly bring the entire series to life, and over the Thanksgiving weekend three new pictures were released on the official Facebook page. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will probably have a very romanticized view of sailing, obviously, like Pirates of the Caribbean. The film follows Edmund and Lucy, as they join with Prince Caspian to find the seven lost lords of Narnia. It will be released on December 10th, 2010. »

Cineastes List "Most Important" Films of the Decade

27 November 2009 4:49 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We broke down the Paste list of the best films of the decade. It's tough business, but I thought that list was consistent, had enough mass appeal and artsy oomph, and was worthy of future discussion. What Paste did that I'm not sure I agree with was extend the list past the usual ten to encompass 50 movies. Even because you're looking at ten years instead of one, I think 20 or 25 is about the limit. Fifty or 100 just seems like overkill. To me, anyway.

Here's a list you'll probably have to check with the ol' IMDb or something, because chances are you won't have seen them all. The Auteurs has the details of "a curated series based on a poll conducted by [Toronto International Film Festival] Cinematheque's Senior Programmer James Quandt," which includes input from film historians, curators, film festival programmers, and other like-minded individuals.

The list isn't really "the best," but rather "the most important. »

John Hillcoat’s Road Trip

26 November 2009 10:53 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

When John Hillcoat, director of the postapocalyptic saga The Road, sits down to talk to Fangoria, he has just come from seeing off Cormac McCarthy, author of the source novel, who was in town for the film’s premiere. So it would seem McCarthy is happy with the screen adaptation (Now Playing in theatres from Dimension).

“Oh yeah, he’s very pleased,” Hillcoat says, acknowledging the challenge of translating McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning prose into cinematic terms. “It’s such rich material; it’s very visual and dynamic. You’ll never get the poetry of the language, because it’s a different medium, but the story and the dialogue are brilliant, and the obstacles that the characters are up against is what makes it very special.”

There are plenty of obstacles for the movie’s hero, known only as The Man and played by The Lord Of The RingsViggo Mortensen, »

Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" premiered in London on Tuesday night as the 2009 Royal Film Performance and the English papers and domestic trades have already weighed in on the potential Oscar contender. Variety's Todd McCarthy was not a fan saying, "the massive success Jackson has enjoyed in the intervening years with his CGI-heavy "The Lord of the Rings" saga (the source of which receives fleeting homage in a bookstore scene here) and "King Kong" has infected the way he approaches this far more intimate tale. First Hobbit Script Completed, Making the Rounds

25 November 2009 4:55 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After rocky courtroom battles and questions regarding whether or not these films would actually get made, The Hobbit seems to be coming along nicely, and rather quickly. Peter Jackson (never heard of him) recently admitted during a Lovely Bones press junket (Via In the News) that the script for the first film has been turned in to the studio and has been receiving generally positive remarks. Of course the studios like it. The Lord of the Rings trilogy made amounts of money that can only be measured in .shit-tons,. why would any studio even consider questioning Jackson.s judgement? Pete and his crack team of writers, comprised of his wife Fran Walsh, Hobbit helmer Guillermo del Toro, and frequent collaborator Philippa Boyens, not only topped off the first script, but have already powered through half of the follow up. Now that at least one script is done, we.ll be »
