It would be a remake of the 1954 Universal horror film about an undersea creature that terrorizes a scientific expedition. According to Variety, Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce with Gary Ross. This would mark the second big Universal picture for Rinsch, who will make his feature directing debut on "47 Ronin," the epic samurai swordsmen tale that takes place in 18th century Japan, and stars Keanu Reeves. The Brood and Creature from the Black Lagoon Remakes Get Directors

16 December 2009 9:21 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Breck Eisner, director of the upcoming “The Crazies” remake, seems to really love doing remakes of horror movies. Having wrapped on “The Crazies”, Eisner has now attached himself as director on a remake of David Cronenberg’s “The Brood”, the creepy director’s tale of telepathic mutant offsprings from the ’70s. Before that, Eisner was also attached to a remake of “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, but has since bailed on that project. Hero Complex reports that instead of Eisner, “Lagoon” is now looking at commercial director Carl Rinsch as a possible replacement. Rinsch, as you’ll recall, recently signed on to direct Keanu Reeves in “47 Ronin”. Yes, Keanu Reeves as a masterless Samurai. Make your own jokes. Before that, Rinsch was being groomed as a Ridley Scott replacement, and was supposed to helm the “Alien” prequel before the studio balked at having anyone other than Scott do the deed. …

'Creature From The Black Lagoon' And 'The Brood' Remakes Find Directors In Carl Rinsch And Breck Eisner

16 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Filmmaker Carl Rinsch has already traded acid-bleeding extraterrestrials for a pack of lordless samurai, but now he's adding some monsters to the mix once again.

According to Hero Complex, Rinsch — a one-time rumored contender to direct the upcoming "Alien" prequel, and recently announced as the helmer for "47 Ronin" alongside star Keanu Reeves — is in discussions with Universal to take the reins on "Creature From the Black Lagoon."

Rinsch's involvement comes after director Breck Eisner departed the project earlier this year. Ironically enough, news of Rinsch's takeover comes coupled with the announcement that Eisner is moving on to a different horror remake altogether — "The Brood."

"The Brood," which Eisner will direct for Spyglass Entertainment based on a script from Cory Goodman, is a remake of David Cronenberg's 1979 horror film about a brood of asexually produced mutant children that act on the violent impulses of their mother thanks to a telepathic link. …

Ridley Scott & Universal Unleash Robin Hood Trailer

16 December 2009 3:55 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Haven’t heard much about Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood for a while, perhaps it’s been lost amidst the buzz of Ridley’s myriad other projects — including the Monopoly Movie, an Alien prequel, etc.  Anyway, Universal’s released a teaser trailer, available via TrailerAddict.

Universal promises ‘the true story behind the legend’ — a strategy that worked wonder’s for Antoine Fuqua’s magnum opus, King Arthur, five years ago (wow, has it really been that long?).  Scripted by Brian Helgeland, there’s plenty of room for optimism when one looks at the strong cast Scott’s assembled (Mark StrongDanny HustonCate Blanchett!) to back Russell Crowe. The notion is also made exciting by Scott’s recent track record with historical epics (if you haven’t seen the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven, you honestly haven’t seen the film).

Anything that postpones Monopoly is fine with us. …

Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” Movie Trailer

15 December 2009 3:21 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

The first trailer for “Robin Hood” is online.

“Robin Hood” Synopsis: Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion, a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

The film, stars Oscar winners Russell Crowe as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Danny Huston as King Richard, …

Official ‘Robin Hood’ Trailer and Pictures

15 December 2009 11:49 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

A teaser trailer and the first official images have surfaced for Robin Hood, the woodland rogue movie directed by Ridley Scott and starring the Gladiator himself, Russell Crowe.  Oh, and Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Kevin Durant, Danny Huston, and Matthew Macfayden.

You won’t see any tights, “Oo de lallies,” or Kevin Costner in this clip, or the movie for that matter.  Instead there’s plenty of sword-swinging, arrow-slinging action set to rock music, the not so subtle trend of letting audiences know this is a new version of the old story.

The reactions to the video seem to be pretty mixed. I personally liked the idea of Scott returning to the popular character when it was titled Nottingham and Crowe way playing both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham in a re-imaging of the story.

The trailer is embedded below, but if you want, …

Carl Rinsch To Direct ‘Black Lagoon’ Remake?

15 December 2009 10:01 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We reported back in May of this year that Universal’s upcoming remake of the classic monster movie, Creature from the Black Lagoon, was sans a director. At one point Sahara director, Breck Eisner, was rumored to be attached to the remake, but we learned thereafter that wasn’t the case.

So the project has been without someone in the director’s chair for months… until now: Variety is reporting that Carl Rinsch is in early talks with Universal to helm its remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Does his name ring any sort of bell with you? A little? Well, that’s because Rinsch was once rumored to be directing the upcoming Alien prequel before Ridley Scott was convinced to helm it himself.

Rinsch was originally a commercial film director (you can check out some of his  visually impressive commercials Here), and if he gets this Black Lagoon …

Rinsch to Direct ‘Black Lagoon’ Remake?

15 December 2009 5:08 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

If this news turns out to be true, I’m more than a little excited: it seems that Ridley Scott protege/son-in-law Carl Erik Rinsch, also known as the man briefly attached to direct the next Alien film, is in talks to helm a remake of 1954’s Creature From the Black Lagoon.

I know what you’re going to say already. Excited about a remake? For shame!

But let’s get something straight: if remakes are going to be a ceaseless avenue of profit (as they always have been in Hollywood), then we should place them in the hands of young, talented directors. Rinsch hasn’t had his chance to shine in the limelight, but look at what Alexandre Aja did with The Hills Have Eyes, for crying out loud!

Black Lagoon director?

15 December 2009 1:38 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

For quite some time, Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was developing a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon for Universal. After what seems like an eternity, the film has finally found its director. Universal is in talks with Carl Erik Rinsch, son-in-law of Ridley Scott, to direct the film. While you might not know much of Rinsch's work yet, he was in talks to direct the Alien prequel and recently signed with Universal to direct 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves. Creature From The Black Lagoon Remake Close to Getting Director?

If you thought The Wolfman has had a troubled road to the big screen, brother, you ain't seen nothing. For better or worse at least the movie got made, which is something that we cannot say about The Creature from the Black Lagoon redux that we've been talking about for the past couple of years. It appears there could be a light at the end of the tunnel though ....

According to Variety Universal Pictures is in early talks with Carl Erik Rinsch to direct the remake of the 1954 Universal classic about a prehistoric fishman who haunts the Amazon.

Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing along with Gary Ross.

"Rinsch shoots highly visual commercials for Rsa owners Ridley and Tony Scott. The Scotts once courted Rinsch to direct a prequel to 'Alien,' until Ridley Scott decided to helm that film, returning to a franchise he originated. …

Carl Erik Rinsch in talks to Remake Creature From The Black Lagoon

14 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Universal is in early talks with commercial director and Ridley Scott protege Carl Erik Rinsch to direct a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon. Last month we told you that Rinsch signed on to helm the Keanu Reeves epic period samurai film 47 Ronin (not to be confused with the adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel Ronin), also for Universal. You might recognize Rinsch's name as he was originally tapped to direct a prequel/remake of Alien, but Fox convinced Ridley Scott to helm the project himself. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch's involvement. Rinsch's commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition. We've profiled his amazing commercials on the site, more than once. If you havent checked them out yet, you should do so now. Carl Rinsch Up For Black Lagoon?

14 December 2009 9:52 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon is one of those more recent projects that has had some trouble swimming through the murky development waters. But now it looks like Ridley Scott prodigy Carl Rinsch might be the man to fish him out. Rinsch, of course, was the man who was seriously considered to take over the Alien prequel/sequel/whatever that Sir Rid has since added to his crowded list of possible films. But since then, the younger director has jumped on to Universal's Samurai pic 47 Ronin, with Keanu Reeves attached to star and a shoot pencilled in to next year. Creature, of course, has been bubbling away for a while now, but Breck Eisner, who had been developing the film, dropped out early this year, and very little has been heard about it since then.  Since he's already connected to Universal through the Ronin film, it only …

Sigourney Weaver Avatar Interview Yields Aliens Blu-ray Scoop

14 December 2009 9:14 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Sigourney Weaver recently sat down with the La Times to talk about her role as brash cigarette smoking botanist Grace Augustine in James Cameron's Avatar. Like any good reporter, interviewer Geoff Boucher made sure to ask Weaver what's next on her plate. The answer is just what Blu-ray adopters have been waiting for.

Sometime in the next few weeks, Sigourney will sit down and watch Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection to record new audio commentaries for the upcoming release of the Quadrilogy on Blu-ray Disc.

"I've never done that, watched all of them in a row," Weaver said. "I just recently made my [19-year-old] daughter watch them. She had never seen them before, believe it or not. I think she just prefers to think of me as good ol' mom, you know, not some person running around a spaceship with a flamethrower."

Their Best Role: Sigourney Weaver in 'Alien' and 'Aliens'

14 December 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's very rare when the Academy Awards reward a performance in an action film. Then again, it's all too rare when a performance dares to stand out in an action film, and especially from a heroine. No, if you want a Best Actress nomination, you pretty much have to smash the loudest plate or have the most sickly terminal illness.

That is, unless you're Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, and you already rose to the occasion as the lone survivor of the commercial starship Nostromo. Now you wield maternal instincts as fiercely as you do a flamethrower when stranded on a planet full of nasty extraterrestrials just like the one that took out your previous crew, and instead of oozing cool like so many Marines around you, you sweat and worry and scream, which makes us care all the more when the Marines start getting picked off one by one.

Avatar: Average & Spectacular

James Cameron has always, honestly, made me go "wow". Watching from behind a cushion as Arnie popped his ruined eyeball into sink, grinning from ear to ear every time I watched Ripley fight the Alien queen sometime around 3am on channel 4 for the 3,000th time or seeing T1000's metallic bullet wounds heal over and that little smile curl his lips. Yet, oddly and as much as I love those films, there's always been something in the way James Cameron put his ideas on the screen recently that makes the movie itself somehow seem like it comes in with a second place trophy, just losing out to the technology that helped make it. Cameron's Avatar introduces us to paraplegic marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington, once again fighting his Aussie accent every step of the way) as he scores a trip to replace his brilliant scientist brother (may he rest in …

Ron Says Avatar's Journey Is Familiar But The Destination Is An Exciting Place We've Never Been

11 December 2009 12:34 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Well, it's finally here. Twelve years after James Cameron struck gold with his surprise hit, Titanic, the most expensive film of its time, he's returned with the most expensive film of our time and one whose influence will resonate over the years to come. Avatar is in no way as emotionally involving as his 1997 epic, but it excels in entertainment and as sheer spectacle. Though the new 3-D filming process the film employs is sure to be the hook for most audiences, Avatar is an even bolder experiment that takes the viewer to a hyper-realistic, intricately designed world. Lucas and Spielberg may be the box-office kings of sci-fi, but the realms Cameron dreams of don't feel like dreams at all, but real places that exist and manage to stay with you long after the movie has ended. Not only does the film live up to its hype of being a …
