Woody Allen to Open Tribeca Film Festival

3 March 2009 4:49 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

For the better part of three decades, Woody Allen had - and earned - a reputation for being a New York director. That's not just because he's a New Yorker, but he shot just about all of his films there. Of course, Manhattan might be the quintessential New York movie, so we shouldn't criticize too much.

But he got out of town a few years ago, and produced some of his freshest films in years, if not some of his best ever. But his new comedy, Whatever Works, finds Allen back at home in New York, and now that film will open the Tribeca Film Festival next month. Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood star in the film, which will debut on April 22nd.

In a press release announcing the deal, Allen called the scenario, "a lovely idea of showing my film in a film festival in my own city. …

Joaquin Phoenix Makes Awkward Appearance on Letterman

12 February 2009 8:40 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

He's insisted his new look and career goals are no hoax, but a shaggy and soft-spoken Joaquin Phoenix seemed like the only one in on a private joke during an awkward appearance on Wednesday's Late Show. "I don't know what will happen," Phoenix mumbled when …

Don’t Call it a Comeback -- Dellamorte reviews Vicky Christina Barcelona

20 January 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Woody Allen has been making films for forty years now. Forty years, with forty feature length films to his credit if you include What’s Up Tiger Lily? That’s a lot of movies. And it’s understandable that if he makes some bad movies (which he has throughout his career) and then makes a great film (which he’s made a ton of). It’s Woody, so let’s say Sleeper, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cario, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Bullets Over Broadway, Deconstructing Harry, Match Point. Twelve great films. And that’s not including his merely good films. As a batting average that’s pretty great. So add another one to the fire, because Vicky Cristina Barcelona is one of his great ones. Rebecca Hall plays Vicky, Scarlet Johansson plays Cristina. Vicky is about to …
