Who do you read? Good Roger, or Bad Roger?

9 hours ago | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

This message came to me from a reader named Peter Svensland. He and a friend have been debating about my qualities as a film critic, and they've involved a considerable critic, Dan Schneider, in their discussion. I will say that he has given the question a surprising amount of thought and attention over the years, and may well be correct in some aspects. What his analysis gives me is a renewed respect and curiosity about his own work.

Dear Roger,

A friend and I would like to have your opinion. It's basically so that we can settle an argument (and small side bet) with a friend over what your opinion would be. My friend and I have carefully co-drafted this email to try to eliminate one or the other of our biases. I hope we succeeded!

I have read your columns and watched your tv shows for many years now »

500 million dollars

10 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

$500 million: that's the reported budget approved by Fox for James Cameron to direct "Avatar", according to the New York Times. Published a few days ago, the article in the New York Times has Us industry players in an uproar. In the paper, journalist Michael Cieply has added up his estimate of the "Avatar" budget, figuring that James Cameron's movie will cost Fox and other investors about half a billion dollars by the time it's finished, marketing included. In the first sentence, Cieply shocked readers and Fox executives alike, who may be facing the repercussions of negative buzz surrounding "Avatar": "Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?" He also brought up the worrying fact that the first trailer and sneak preview of "Avatar" did not generate the expected favorable response, »

Avatar’s Budget is Almost $500 Million?! Can It Make a Profit?

8 November 2009 10:29 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In the current economic climate, simply typing a sentence about a film that, including marketing costs, now tallies up to a reported half-a-billion dollars is surreal enough to put Dr. Evil on stun. That's the unprecedented figure being batted around in a new Nyt report about the financial realities that lie ahead for James Cameron's Avatar and 20th Century Fox. So, what exactly are the stakes and how much does the 3D sci-fi actioner and proclaimed cinematic game changer need to gross come December? Well, what surprised me most about the report is the flow of calm responses from inside sources that are sprinkled throughout. While the graveyard of pricey tentpole flops that includes Waterworld, Heaven's Gate, Cuttthroat Island, and even this summer's Terminator Salvation would seem to loom large, Avatar's costs are said to be well divided amongst many partners i.e. there's not a single head that, »

20 Ways to Get Your "Arrested Development" Movie Fix*

5 November 2009 7:09 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

*Until they actually make the movie

Forget Scientology or Heaven's Gate. Today, the biggest cult in our country may very well be the teeming masses anxiously awaiting the return of "Arrested Development." After years of rumors and dashed hopes, it seems the beloved TV show will finally, for real, this time, be reincarnated on the big screen.

But don't break out your Cornballers yet: the film isn't set to hit theaters until 2011. How will you last that long? While you can treasure your DVD collection of all three seasons (or, for that matter, catch re-airs on IFC), you'll probably want to vary things up in the year-plus before we get sweet relief. Off the top of your head, you might know to watch Michael Cera in "Juno," but where can you find Judy Greer in a role as crazy as Kitty Sanchez? Will Arnett as a man as bumbling and self-involved as Gob? »

Correction: Stan Helsing Downgraded From Historic Flop to Regular Flop

26 October 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

It's always hard to agree exactly what constitutes a flop, particularly those of the historic variety -- the ones that will join Heaven's Gate, Ishtar, Gigli and the beloved, Doa Delgo. You can't even really count this year's notorious Land of the Lost -- which ultimately grossed back half its $100 million budget in the U.S. alone -- among their ranks. Thankfully, the weekend yielded an under-promoted, limited-release, unequivocal catastrophe for the ages seasonal slouch [see update after the jump]. And no, it wasn't Amelia (though she was pretty close). »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: The Summer Movie Smack-Down!

28 August 2009 10:31 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Summer movies? Boo! No, wait...Whoop-doo!

I think its both safe and fair to say this: Not one more movie ever needs to be made. Ever. Again. We've used up our fresh water well. We've gone to the depths and come back with the bends. Since its inception as an art form, each proceeding decade has been known for reinventing cinema on some evolutionary level. Then we hit the 80s, which was our last bastion of hope for imaginative storytelling. The 90s came on like a long slow drip of boring ineptitude. Or biggest hits were so-called duck press endeavors that managed to regurgitate everything that came before them. While Forrest Gump helped utilize and establish never before seen special effects, it was nothing more than a collage of past decades as reflected through the artistry of film. The same can be said of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (though »

The Comeback Kids - The '90s Westerns That Made Movie History

While most movie fans were distracted by Reality Bites and Titanic, Western stars were quietly reclaiming their place in American cinema. Any Western fan will tell you that Michael Cimino sunk the genre in 1980 with his overwrought, under-attended flop Heaven's Gate. After that jaw-dropping failure, production of Westerns slowed to a trickle and cowboys seemed relegated to reruns of Gunsmoke. But lo and behind! The '90s brought about »
