Britain's most famous television and film mogul, Lew Grade died Sunday in London, less than two weeks short of his 92nd birthday. One of the founders of commercial TV in Britain, Grade produced such programs as diverse as The Muppets variety show and The Saint mysteries. His philosophy for creating television programs, he once said, was akin to the strategy of a vaudeville producer: "Make sure you have enough different acts so that at least half will appeal to all the audience." Late in life he moved into motion pictures, succeeding with On Golden Pond (1981) and Pink Panther, The (1963) series, but flopping with Raise the Titanic (1980). »
