Rarities from Shore’s vaults on new CD

Howard Shore, the composer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is of course best known for his big, epic and orchestral scores for the aforementioned fantasy blockbuster saga, but he started out as a composer with a knack for experimentalism and unusual musical ventures. It has been exemplified in several of his earlier film scores, including Videodrome, Scanners and After Hours. Now, from the composer’s own record label (Howe ... »

David Cronenberg to Direct His Own Remake of The Fly

24 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

David Cronenberg's The Fly has been on the remake block for at least a couple of years now, along with several other Cronenberg flicks including Videodrome [1] and Scanners [2] (much to the dismay of horror fans everywhere). This week, however, THR's Risky Biz Blog [3] brings us word that Fox may have finally found a director for the remake that fans can actually get behind: David Cronenberg himself! That's right, despite the fact that Cronenberg had previously stated that he had no desire to take part in a remake (he wasn't involved in The Fly II either), he has apparently had a change of heart. Did his recent work on a Paris opera adaptation of The Fly rekindle some interest? A lot of people are grouping this in as part of a new trend where directors have been remaking their own work; for example, Michael Haneke's Funny Games, and Takashi Shimizu's The Grudge. »

David Cronenberg in Talks to Remake The Fly

24 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Hollywood Reporter is writing that acclaimed director David Cronenberg is in talks with Fox to remake his own version of The Fly.

The 1986 sci-fi/horror movie, starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, was a reimagining of the 1958 movie of the same name starring Vincent Price. The story involved a scientist named Seth Brundle (Goldblum) who falls in love with Veronica Quaife (Davis), a reporter studying his work. Brundle's DNA is fused with that of a fly when a teleportation experiment goes wrong.

As his body undergoes rapid changes, the movie turns surprisingly poignant: His relationship with Veronica deepens, and she must watch as the man she loves gradually loses his touch with humanity. The melodramatic nature of the script prompted Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore (who scored the movie) to create an opera, which premiered in Paris in July 2008.

Presumably, this remake would allow Cronenberg to make use of improved special-effects technology, »

David Cronenberg Ready To Remake His Own The Fly

24 September 2009 3:46 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Canadian director David Cronenberg, director of crazy Sci-Fi classics such as Scanners and Videodrome, will remake “The Fly” according to Risky Business, a movie that he himself remade starring Jeff Goldblum as a scientist dude with no quality control. The Official Synopsis: A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong That’s the scoop basically. Cronenberg apparently would rather do the reboot himself before some hack gets his mitts on it. David joins Ridley Scott in the directing your own rebooted work. Ridley will re-energize Alien sometime in the near future. Thanks /Film. »

Do you have a favorite Canadian horror movie?

Okay, this might sound like a strange question -- until you realize how many horror films were made north of the 42nd parallel. Now Canada is, by no means, a horror mecca, but Horror-Movies.ca's list of Top 30 Canadian Horror Movies (ranked by fan voting) reminds us that there are more than we might think.

More recent contributions include Bruce McDonald's Pontypool, the horror flick that Salon called an awesome "claustrophobic, locked-in-the-barn zombie movie." (That I'm actually planning to slip into the DVD player tonight!) Not to mention Prom Night, Ginger Snaps, Screamers, Cube, Silent Hill... And then, well, almost anything that's come from the hands of David Cronenberg pops up on the list -- Shivers, Scanners, Videodrome, and the film that helped make Christopher Walken a paragon of irresistible creepiness, The Dead Zone. Without that director, any horror list wouldn't be quite the same, »

In Hollywood, it is celebrity which makes headlines, but what lasts longest in this industry is respect The key to respect is something nobody on Earth has the time or experience to analyze, but it is an easy thing to gauge: if you were at AMPAS’s tribute to legendary makeup artist Dick Smith, you saw respect in the eyes of the likes of Rick Baker, Linda Blair, and Hal Holbrook. This salute drew the newsworthy likes of J.J. Abrams and John Landis, but this was merely the audience. The great make-up artist Rick Baker moderated panels that included actor Linda Blair, recent Oscar-winner Greg Cannom, and a host of others who came to express their gratitude for this titan of make-up. You also saw a love for the art of makeup, and, indeed, love for the mastery of any art form, whether it be cinematic or otherwise. And you »

Taking place tomorrow, June 17, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, CA 90211, a Tribute to Dick Smith will honor the make-up effects legend behind "Scanners" and "Altered States." Robert De Niro’s Mohawk in “Taxi Driver,” Linda Blair’s satanic transformation in “The Exorcist,” Marlon Brando’s jowls in “The Godfather” and F. Murray Abraham’s deterioration in “Amadeus” all have one artistic hand in common, that of the makeup effects master Dick Smith. Smith’s creation of new makeup techniques throughout his career not only transformed the art of motion picture makeup, but inspired a new generation of makeup and visual effects artists who have embraced him as a true visionary and mentor. Smith’s work on the “Old Salieri” makeup for “Amadeus” (1984) earned him an Oscar and he received an additional nomination for his makeup work on “Dad” (1989). Cronenberg: A new look at Videodrome

23 May 2009 8:04 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After taking a 30th Anniversary look at David Cronenberg's The Brood yesterday (read it here), Jack returns with a fresh look at Videodrome, a Fango favorite seen on the classic cover of Fangoria #25 (pictured below).

One of the things that make David Cronenberg a great writer/director is that no matter how whacked-out his premises are, they come from a place of uncomfortable truth.

The director known for pioneering the “body-horror” subgenre frequently constructs his visceral nightmares as allegories for all-to-human anxieties, from disease and decay to familial conflict and divorce.

When he made Videodrome, Cronenberg was in between his creative breakthrough and his commercial one. He had recently made The Brood, which, in addition to being his most mature and sophisticated horror effort to date, drew on personal pain of the director’s own divorce. It balanced expert technical direction, genuine emotion, and pure terror. A few years after Videodrome, »

Videodrome: The Next Generation

27 April 2009 6:54 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

David Cronenberg is high on my list of a filmmaker whose movies I need to familiarize myself with more. I love Scanners and The Fly, but I've been told I need to catch some of his movies that are more cult-appreciated, like Videodrome. It looks like I better hurry up and catch the originals, because the Hollywood machine is ready to grind them up for remaking. Variety reports that Universal Pictures is targeting Videodrome for remake. The original movie starred James Woods as a network executive who began airing a television series that garnered viewers through torture and murder. Imagine how far that envelope could be pushed in today's world, where we watch people starve and suffer as weekly reality entertainment. Heck, it's probably only a matter of time before Cronenberg's original vision becomes something close to reality. As far as the movie remake, expect more of a sci-fi piece, »

Cronenberg's 'Videodrome' Next In Line for a Remake

27 April 2009 12:42 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I have some catching up to do when it comes to David Cronenberg films as I have never seen Videodrome or Scanners, another one of his films up for remake status. On the other hand I did take in Birth of a Nation, Stagecoach and 42nd Street this weekend as I have now seen all 15 of TCM's Top 15 Most Influential Films of All-Time. Make of that what you will, but let's get into this Videodrome remake business. Michael Fleming at Variety is reporting the news saying the 1983 Cronenberg feature will be remade with a script penned by Ehren Kruger (The Ring) as he teams up with his Skeleton Key producer partner Daniel Bobker and Universal Pictures aboard to distribute. The original starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming "Videodrome," a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. Universal Remaking Cronenberg's Twisted Videodrome

26 April 2009 9:02 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Another day, another remake. Universal has announced that they are remaking David Cronenberg's 1983 thriller Videodrome. They've already hired writer Ehren Kruger (of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen most recently) to put together a script, with Daniel Bobker (The Skeleton Key, The Brothers Grimm) producing. No word on a director or anything else, but they are modernizing it, turning into a "large-scale sci-fi action thriller." A remake of Cronenberg's Scanners is also in development, but it has hit some snags as of recent. Universal had to track down the rights all the way to Canadian distribution vet Rene Malo. The original Videodrome starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming "Videodrome," a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. This updated remake will modernize that concept and infuse it with sci-fi elements like nano-technology. I'm not even going to »

Universal To Remake Videdrome? -- Reboot of David Cronenberg’s classic will have everything except the Cronenberg

26 April 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Nicole Pedersen I don’t waste my time decrying remakes - aka reboots, re-imaginings or whatever they like to call them these days. I see it as a big waste of time. Remakes make money – end of story. Original concepts are a financial gamble and so, until audiences stop craving the unoriginal, remakes are something that film fans are just gonna have to abide. But what if the remake in question was never a blockbuster to begin with? What if a studio was planning to remake a cult classic? A film from a young director who grew up to become a respected auteur? Does it make sense to start re-imagining a film like that? Universal says “Hell Yes!” According to Variety the studio is planning to remake the David Cronenberg classic “Videdrome”. The 1983 sci-fi/horror flick was Cronenberg’s follow-up to “Scanners” ... »

Will Cronenberg Return to Horror?

23 April 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

With his recent move to more dramatic fare like the Viggo Mortenson vehicles A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, fans may be wondering if Canadian director David Cronenberg has put down the proverbial horror scythe and left behind the low budget thrillers of his younger days (though admittedly, the two aforementioned films still offer plenty of terrifying thrills in their own right).

Though he's presently at work on a Jason Bourne-style spy thriller called The Matarese Circle, likely to star Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington, Cronenberg revealed to MTV that he hasn't necessarily abandoned his horror roots by any stretch of the imagination.

"I would return to the genre if I had a project that I really liked," Cronenberg told MTV News in a recent interview.

The director wouldn't comment on what sort of projects might appeal to him, but he was decidedly emphatic about the ones that wouldn't, »
