One of our own Chris Ullrich’s favorite films this year, Solomon Kane, has apparently been acquired for U.S. distribution by Lionsgate, a studio known for supporting genre and independent movies. According to Fangoria, who broke the news, there are rumblings that the film may even get a theatrical run prior to a DVD release.
Horror aficionados might be familiar with director Michael J. Bassett, who previously directed Deathwatch (2002) and Wilderness (2006). Soloman Kane is a character originally created by pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard, of Conan the Barbarian fame. Stories about the character appeared in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920’s.
James Purefoy stars as the title character, who roams the earth trying to wipe out evil after the devil acquires his soul and he has a change of heart about his evil ways. The movie also stars prolific actor Max Von Sydow (Flash Gordon, Dune, The Tudors »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.
“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”
The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.
Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.
Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

The man responsible for the terror that was Captain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the joy that was He-Man in Masters of the Universe revealed to MTV that he’s in talks for an unnamed part in the upcoming Conan reboot. Lundgren caught MTV New’s attention with this little ditty:
“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan”
As to whether anything was definite, the man went on to say:
“It’s too early”
Regarding a question about when he might know for sure, he responded:
“probably next year”
He-Man need not go on.
Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming Sly Stallone-directed mercenary flick, The Expendables, which has the same production team as Conan. He-Man can network.
The new Conan is to be directed by Marcus Nispel (who replaced Brett Ratner) and penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Nispel helmed Friday the 13th »

MTV News caught up with Dolph Lundgren who said that he is talking to producers of Conan and might be making an appearance in the reboot.
"I've talked to the producers about doing something for 'Conan,'" Lundgren said, as he cautioned that casting is still going on and whether there is a role for him at all likely wouldn't be decided until 2010.
"It's too early," he said, explaining that he didn't expect to know more until "probably next year."
Directed by Marcus Nispel, the Lionsgate film is based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The new version is expected to be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.
No production date was announced.

A casting call may be out for the lead role in 'Conan,' since former franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger is busy governing the State of California. Whether director Marcus Nispel agrees with Brett Ratner's perspective that the film's title character should be played by "an unknown" remains to be seen, but an established action movie legend and former face of the "Punisher" could make an appearance.
"I've talked to the producers about doing something for 'Conan,'" actor Dolph Lundgren told MTV News while promoting his direct-to-dvd film "Command Performance," which he co-wrote, directed and starred in.
"Conan" shares a team of producers with Lundgren's upcoming Sylvester Stallone film "The Expendables," which might have opened the way for the opportunity. Asked what type of role he'd be looking for, Lundgren cautioned that casting is still going on and whether there is a role for him at all »

Savvy film newshounds around the globe got a little treat last week when a casting breakdown for the upcoming Conan the Barbarian reboot hit the interwebs. The character listing gives a lot of information about each character (as well as surprisingly specific ethnic requirements). Staggeringly, the men span a wide age range while the women are all 18-22. Hmm. Here at TheTorchOnline.com, we figured we would save the production company some headaches and go ahead and cast the film for them. Here's who we pick: Conan - Eric Bana
For the main man himself, you have to be really clever. »

Wanna play Conan in Marcus Nispel’s upcoming remake of “Conan the Barbarian”? Well, you should be at least in your 20s to early 30s, Caucasian, powerfully built, broad-shouldered, and with sun browned skin lined with scars. And oh yeah, piercing blue eyes, square-cut black mane, and be taller than average wouldn’t hurt, either. That’s according to a breakdown of all the characters that will be in the movie, which happens to also include plenty of plot details. In short: after bad guy Khalar Singh kills his father (an old comrade of Singh’s) and slaughters his village (with the help of some nasty mecs), Conan, the last of the Cimmerians, vows vengeance. A now-adult Conan eventually teams up with Tamara, a 20-something badass martial arts beauty who is herself in search of Singh, who has absconded with her queen, Ilira. /Film pointed us to a detailed breakdown for the characters in Marcus Nispel’s reboot of Conan The Barbarian, which is scheduled to begin shooting in Bulgaria in February. Nispel brought us Friday the 13th (2009) and The Very Best of Cher: The Video Hits Collection. If he can slip the right character into that “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit, I’ll go see Conan in the theaters 32 times. However, dress that outfit on the wrong character and who knows how many cities will burn?
IMDb lists Roland Kickinger as being rumored to play the barbarian. You might remember him from such films as Terminator Salvation (he played the T-800’s body) and Lethal Weapon 4. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the gentlemen credited with writing Conan, worked together previously penning the scripts for Sahara and Dead of Night.
Without further ado, check out the casting criteria for »

The casting characters list for director Marcus Nispel's (Pathfinder) live-action reboot of the Conan franchise has been leaked online at MovieHole.net, and it appears the producers are not necessarily looking for a "name" actor to fill the sweaty boots of the Cimmerian barbarian created by Robert E. Howard.
Below are the descriptions for the lead protagonists. The complete list also has cast descriptions for the lead antagonist, "Khalar Singh" (a warlord seeking the blood of a queen to "bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron"), "Young Conan," and multiple "Pict Savages." Warning: The descriptions give quite a bit of information about the movie's plot, so if you don't like spoilers, read at your own risk!

Today we have 14 new hi-res photos from the upcoming “Solomon Kane” movie.
It tells the heroic story of a savage warrior in 16th Century England who seeks redemption for a lifetime of sins by renouncing violence to live a life of purity, only to find himself compelled to pick up his sword once again to vanquish a growing evil.
James Purefoy has been cast as puritan swordsman Solomon Kane in a movie of the same name to be made from the stories of “Conan the Barbarian” creator Robert E. Howard. Kane is a 16th century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him but is determined to redeem himself by living peaceably. But he finds himself dragged out of retirement for a fight against evil.

The 1600's don't get nearly enough love in cinema, and it's a real shame. The era of witch hunts, musketeers, and flintlock pistols is a ripe one, and has been the setting for such gems as "Captain Blood", "The Three Musketeers" (partial to the Oliver Reed one, of course; totally badass), and "The Conqueror Worm" (aka "Witchfinder General"). And as much money as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films have made, their success has led more to the greenlighting of franchises based on rides and brands than any real cinematic rediscovery of the 17th century. Anyway, there's something genuinely irresistible about this time frame, at least for me.
I don't know if it's the constant specter of religious strife in the pre- and post-Cromwell era, the fact that this part of »

The out-of-town fans, actors, filmmakers and film critics have gone home, the parties are over and the post-fest colds are slowly fading after Fantastic Fest 2009. It seems like a good time to reflect over and share my personal festival experience this year, including some films you might want to check out.
Movie highlights:
Solomon Kane - The talented and charismatic British actor James Purefoy portrays the title fictional character created by pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard, best known for his Conan the Barbarian series. Sword and sorcery adventure takes a twist, set in the Puritan era in a grim time portrayed through rain and snow. Despite all the action that packs a wallop in this film, what is truly the core of Solomon Kane is the vision of one man's path to redemption, found in an unlikely manner. The supporting characters in the Crowthorn family were well-cast, with Pete Postlethwaite »

Michael Bassett has been toiling in the world of low-budget horror for most of the decade, managing to bring two small films to the screen so far. "Deathwatch" and "Wilderness" are both promising pictures that are hampered more by ambition than by anything, and it's obvious that Bassett has a big imagination he's been itching to set loose. It seems perfect, then, that he was tapped to bring Robert E. Howard's first great pulp creation to life. Everyone knows Conan the Barbarian, but Solomon Kane was actually created while Howard was still in high school, and it's a far more difficult... »

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the biggest Hollywood action star through the 80s and 90s, with films like "Conan the Barbarian," "The Terminator" and "Predator." Unfortunately, at least six of his last movies were the most forgettable and probably the worst of his career. Hollywood attempted to pass the torch to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and wanted to signify the transition by having the two actors pass each other in a night club scene in "The Rundown." But thanks to terrible filmmaking and The Rock's poor decision making, he never ended up replacing Arnold. It seems that Schwarzenegger may be irreplaceable and director McG completely agrees with that. During casting for "Terminator Salvation," McG said the following: "Those are big shoes to fill. It's a decidedly masculine role and I think we're living in a time where a lot of actors are very effeminate and they're sort of skinny, heroine chic." Arnold, »

Sony will produce a feature adaptation of Mattel's He-Man action figure line, based on the Filmation Studios cartoon hero, with Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch developing the property for Columbia Pictures. The original Filmation Studios animated He-Man: Masters Of The Universe TV series, inspired by author Robert E. Howard's Conan The Barbarian, aired 130 syndicated episodes in 1983, featuring muscle-bound 'He-Man' defending 'Eternia' and the secrets of 'Castle Grayskull' from the evil forces of 'Skeletor'. The series was followed in 1990 by The New Adventures of He-Man. The first series was set during the aftermath of a 'Great War', when the 'Sorceress of Castle Grayskull', aka 'The Goddess', gave 'Prince Adam', son of planet Eternia's 'King Randor' and the earthling 'Queen Marlena', his super powers. Adam would hold aloft the 'Sword of Power', proclaiming, "By the power of Grayskull...I have the power!" Adam's physique would then »

“If I kill you, I am bound for hell… It is a price I shall gladly pay!” A few weeks ago, as I sat down to watch Indiana Jones for the 600th time, I found myself wondering… What the hell happened to the Adventure genre? I mean Real adventure! Errol Flynn (or even Kevin Costner) as Robin Hood kind of adventure, The Goonies kind of adventure, The Rocketeer kind of adventure! Films that gallantly leap across the chasm between Action Blockbuster and Historical Epic. Like no other genre, these movies were escapism at its best! I have a theory… The blame needs to be put entirely on Blockbuster Video. When I was a kid, I remember vividly that my local ‘Video 99’ store had a dedicated Adventure section. The one magnificent wall, stocked full of old-school painted posters, with adjectives like ‘exhilarating’ or ‘astonishing’, only hinting at the epic quests waiting on those VHS tapes. »

Like Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane is a creation of author Robert E. Howard, though most of us have probably never heard of the character. This lavishly produced effects/action/fantasy extravaganza is looking to change that. and it looks pretty awesome. No U.S. release date just yet.
Robert Zemeckis's 3D animated flick looks far flashier than anything Charles Dickens had in mind. Then again, since everyone knows the story forward and backward, embellishment is almost mandatory. This looks like a nice slice of holiday movie fun and you can watch for it on November 6.

I was about a foot away from certain death yesterday. This is what is called a hook. Right now, one of two things is crossing your mind. 1) Oh my God! How did Greg almost die? Or 2) What idiot fucked up Greg's death? Read on to find out. It's my busiest day in Toronto as far as movies go, so I grab some coffee and head downtown. There's this very cool cafe right across where I'm staying in Toronto that makes a very decent cup of coffee. They also crank Ccr over the speakers which it makes that much more cool. I was standing in line and this dude comes up and puts his hand on my chest and says "I like your shirt." It is an awesome shirt, but I think the touching thing was kind of odd. I said thanks and ordered my coffee and that was that. Who does that? »

Solomon Kane Written and Directed by Michael J. Bassett Starring: James Purefoy, Pete Postlethwaite, Max Von Sydow and Rachel Hurd-Wood For those of you not familiar with Solomon Kane as a character, here's a quick lesson: Robert E. Howard, the legendary creator of Conan the Barbarian, created Solomon Kane back in the pulp-era. A 16th century Puritan, with a sombre outlook. A valiant leader and fighter armed with a rapier, a dagger and two flintlock pistols, pale skin, cold eyes, dressed in black, shadowed by a slouch hat. Solomon Kane was once a man of pure evil. Killing and stealing as he pleased. But this life of pillaging and plundering in North Africa in the late 1500's has got the attention of the Devil and the Devil has layed claim to Solomon Kane's tortured and lost soul. The only way for him to save his soul is to redeem himself, »
