It’s The 80’s Again: Romancing The Stone & Overboard Remakes

Almost exactly a year ago, we brought you news that 20th Century Fox was remaking the Michael Douglas adventure film, Romancing The Stone ,with Eagle Eye’s Daniel McDermott penning the script. Now the film has a director in the form of The Ugly Truth’s Robert Luketic (insert personal opinion here).
To make matters worse, it also seems like Hollywood is about to remake the 1987 Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn romantic team-up, Overboard!
It looks like the Romancing The Stone remake will hit the big-screen first, as the producer of the film, Emma Watts, was recently named President of Production at 20th Century Fox. With Luketic involved, one would imagine that the comedy quota of the remake will be ramped up and the adventure angle will be … er… god knows, really!
In the original Rts, Douglas played a fortune-hunter who becomes involved with Katheleen Turner’s romance novelist in

I’m not going to lie, I typically hate box sets. They’re more often than not, a dumping ground for DVD’s that have spent one too many years collecting dust in some old warehouse that their distributers are just a little too eager to get off the shelves. You go to your local video retailer or Amazon.com and think “Awesome, John Carpenter box set. Surely it’s packed with the original Halloween, The Thing, and Escape From New York.” Much to your dismay, you come to realize you’re stuck with Ghosts Of Mars (featuring the acting prowess of Ice Cube), that damned Village remake, and Escape From L.A.. Moreover even if you happen to like one or two of the flicks in the set, you’re bound to hate the rest; that is to say, if you could even identify what the, often bottom barrel,

Editor's Note: We hope you enjoy this new Friday afternoon column, Junkfood Cinema, by Brian Salisbury. It celebrates movies that are so bad, even though they are also sometimes so good. For more (coming each and every Friday), stay tuned to the Junkfood Cinema Archive. Also, please feel free to let us know what you think of this new weekly feature in the comment section below.
Hello all. Perhaps you are wondering as to the reason I was rejected by every film school in the tri-state area. I wish I could say it was because I was caught night putting with the dean's daughter or because I drank my weight in scotch and accidentally burned down an archives building. But alas, it is because I have a well-documented addiction to cinema crapiteé. I enjoy quality films like any other respectable film critic, but all too often I find myself pining for the simple, cheesy

Len Wiseman in Talks to Direct Untitled Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

We've been hearing Len Wiseman's name thrown around a lot over the past year or two, but despite being courted for some high profile projects, he still doesn't have a gig lined up to follow 2007's Live Free or Die Hard. It's possible that he's just being choosy (which makes sense considering that Die Hard was reportedly a pretty grueling shoot), but it also seems like he's had a bit of bad luck with a few projects falling through or being put on hold. At one point he was supposed to direct the Escape From New York remake, but that seems to be dead, and he is also still attached to the Gears of War movie and the comic book adaptations Atlantis Rising and Shrapnel. However, at this point his next project is shaping up to be something entirely different.
According to The Hollywood Reporter [1], Wiseman has signed on

Director Len Wiseman to End the World with Nocturne

Len Wiseman, the man who abused his blue-filter privileges for Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, will follow up 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard with an end-of-the-world flick entitled Nocturne. According to THR, 20th Century Fox has picked up the project based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position. The project is currently looking for writers for what I have to say is not a bad premise.
As for Wiseman, his other potential projects, including the underwater military action flick Atlantis Rising and the futuristic war movie Shrapnel (why all the killing, Wiseman?), but doesn’t have a go picture. Wiseman has been a non-starter for some potentially major films like a remake of Escape from New York and an adaptation of the popular video game Gears of War.

Italian cult hero, Enzo G. Castellari, may be known to most as the director of the original Inglorious Bastards (with an "a"), but around these parts he'll always be lauded as the creator of those great Italian post-apocalyptic Bs known lovingly as "The Bronx Warriors Trilogy." Word to the wise, the films are not actually a trilogy, but rather a series of films designed to mimic the success of three films: The Warriors, Escape from New York, and The Road Warrior.
Word is, the gang at Shameless Screen Entertainment are bringing these films back to life in a special set 3-disc boxed set:
"The three-disc set comes packaged in a limited edition special collector’s tin and includes reversible sleeves for each individual title. Additional special features include an introduction to the films by Castellari, plus an all-new 20-minute interview with the director.

Director: Stephen J. Hadden.
Writer: Stephen J. Hadden.
Bio-Dead is a Time Warner Video-On-Demand selection for 2009 and the film blends science fiction with horror, in a grotesque fashion. A film with a claustrophobic feel, Bio-Dead offers a good time, but skimps on the size of cast and settings. A second film for director Stephen J. Hadden, fans can check this film out if you feel you can handle the gore!
The plot is simple, direct and revolves around four workers who must investigate the contaminated "Zone." The story takes place after a bio-terrorist attack in southern California. Millions are dead and a corporation has been given the green light to find survivors, retrieve bodies, and generally clean up the "Zone." However, things get complicated when a supposed safe area turns out to be a haven for the genetically mutated. Can this team of four bio-hazard workers (Tony Williams, Jacob Gentry,

After reading Peter Hall's post on Kevin Spacey's stunning impersonations, I had to reacquaint myself with the old SNL sketch he mentioned and get as much Spacey as I could. (Check it out if you have no idea what I'm talking about.) From there, well, the handy site called YouTube suggested something else for me -- Kurt Russell's Star Wars audition.
If you didn't already know, he was one of the many actors vying for the role of Han Solo (according to IMDb, a list including Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken, Jack Nicholson, and even -- egads -- Steve Martin). What's funny about the clip (after the jump) is how completely earnest and goodie Russell was playing it -- almost like the good-natured Disney fare from his youth. There was none of the true cockiness, ego, or charisma that made the character so memorable. No, no one could

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'. I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!
25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen.

Turning the World Upside Down - Script review of Juan Diego Solanas' mind bending Sci-Fi Romance

[Editor's note: You can see our first piece on this film from back in February, and also watch an incredible short Juan Solanas did.]
Upside Down is a project currently sitting in pre-production, due to be helmed by Argentinean director Juan Diego Solanas and to star Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess.
A quick glance at IMDb and we have an intriguing premise. Set on another world which consists of two huge planets that sit one on top of the other, they are attached by an enormous tower called Transworld, which allows for limited contact between the two races of humans that live on each planet, and watch each other by literally looking ‘up’ to see their neighbours.
The script begins with a narrator explaining the evolution of this bizarre people; from cavemen on each world seeing each other for the first time, to Greek–like philosophers and scientists communicating by drawing equations in fields and, eventually Roman-type emperors forming the technology to trade with the other planet. It soon becomes clear that the ‘Top

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Originally published, 04/01/2007
In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony.
The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen,

I didn't think I'd ever see it. I thought it couldn't be done. I considered it impossible. But my friends at the Texas Frightmare have pulled off the biggest guest in all of conventions.
John Carpenter.
I don't know how Tfw got him, but John Carpenter will be at their 2010 show. Read that again. John Carpenter. Director of some of the greatest horror films of all time. Halloween. The Thing. Escape From New York. Big Trouble In Little China. His earlier efforts read like a litany of horror's most accomplished films. For the covention-goer, it doesn't get any bigger than this.
Here's Twf's press release. If you have any love of horror, this is a tremendous to you:
Join us April 30-May 2, 2010 in Dallas as Texas Frightmare Weekend salutes legendary filmmaker and composer John Carpenter! This movie maverick staggered audiences in 1978 by unleashing suburban boogeyman Michael Myers into our collective nightmares with Halloween.

As a big fan of horror movies and the zombie sub-genre, I really wanted to like George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead and was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt as much as possible. Although, my expectations were pretty low after Romero’s last two zombie movie efforts Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. Sadly, this film didn’t even manage to rise up to the level of my lowered expectations and is, instead, a heavily flawed and often very bad addition to Romero’s body of work.
Still, this is the man who basically invented the zombie film genre, so attention must be paid and respect given for his enduring legacy as one of this country’s innovative artists. But something has obviously gone a bit off kilter and the writer/director seems to have lost his way. I’m not
