Staunton Hill Coming to DVD

11 September 2009 5:24 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

While Papa George is out touring the world with Survival of the Dead, the younger Romero, Cameron, is set to make his filmmaking debut with Staunton Hill, which will be touching down soon courtesy of Anchor Bay.

Cameron Romero is clearly following in his father’s fearful footsteps as a master of terror and suspense. When a group of hikers take off for a weekend of fun and adventure in a remote mountain region, they unwittingly stumble across the Staunton family – for whom the hill is named – and find themselves at the mercy of a depraved, diabolical brood that will stop at nothing to rid their property of these “trespassers.”

Staunton Hill stars Kathy Lamkin (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, No Country for Old Men), Cristen Coppen (Road Trip, Art School Confidential), Kiko Ellsworth (“Heroes,” “Dexter”), and Cooper Huckabee (Space Cowboys, Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse).

G. Cameron Romero’s Staunton Hill coming to DVD

10 September 2009 12:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Anchor Bay Entertainment gave Fango the official word that it’s releasing Staunton Hill to DVD next month (see the cover art below). The movie, which streets October 6, was directed by G. Cameron Romero, son of zombie master George A. Romero.

Scripted by David Rountree (who also co-stars), Staunton Hill is set at the titular locale in the middle of a remote mountain area. A group of hikers arrive for a weekend jaunt and wind up on the Staunton family property—and needless to say, this twisted bunch doesn’t take kindly to trespassers, setting out to stalk and kill them. The junior Romero’s second fright feature after the as-yet unreleased The Screening, Staunton Hill also toplines Kathy Lamkin (Tea Lady from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and its prequel), Cristen Coppen, Kiko Ellsworth, Christine Carlo, Paula Rhodes, Charlie Bodin, B.J. Hendricks and The Funhouse’s Cooper Huckabee; the »

Eli Roth Jumps Into 'Funhouse' Remake

10 June 2009 9:53 PM, PDT | ESplatter.com | See recent ESplatter news »

Tobe Hooper's "The Funhouse" was a solid, albeit a bit slow, slasher movie from 1981. Reports out this evening have Eli Roth set to remake it -- now that his "Cell" movie is apparently on indefinite hiatus. Fangoria reports that Roth is in talks to direct the film for Universal. “I’m talking with Universal about that one,” Roth says. “The Funhouse is a movie where the first half is brilliant—they set up these great characters—and then they pay off none of them. You have Marco the Magician sawing his daughter in half, the brothers who run the carnival and the funhouse setting. »

Eli Roth's Plan for Funhouse Remake

10 June 2009 6:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

It seems like anytime director Eli Roth is asked about what project he is working on, he replies with about twenty new films that he has planned. The man hasn't made a feature film since "Hostel: Part II." In an interview with Fangoria, Roth mentioned that he is looking to remake Tobe Hooper's 1981 horror film "The Funhouse," which is about four teenage friends spending the night in a carnival funhouse, only to end up being stalked by a deformed man in a Frankenstein mask. "I'm talking with Universal about that one," Roth revealed. "'The Funhouse' is a movie where the first half is brilliant . they set up these great characters . and then they pay off none of them. Eli Roth In Talks To Remake The Funhouse

10 June 2009 2:12 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Eli Roth is one of those writer/directors from the Quentin Tarantino school of talking about projects and ideas in development, many of which might never come to fruition (not a bad thing, it keeps us working). Recently Roth has been talking up his Transformers-sized sci-fi epic Endangered Species and Thanksgiving (based on the faux Grindhouse trailer) which he plans to shoot back to back. But now Roth tells Fangoria that he is also in talks to produce (possibly direct?) a remake of the classic 1981 Tobe Hooper horror film The Funhouse. I’m talking with Universal about that one. The Funhouse is a movie where the first half is brilliant—they set up these great characters—and then they pay off none of them. You have Marco the Magician sawing his daughter in half, the brothers who run the carnival and the funhouse setting. And then it’s all about this weird mutant thing. »

Eli Roth’s Idea For a Funhouse Remake Sounds Great

10 June 2009 12:03 PM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

I could never decide if I consider Tobe Hooper a hack or not. I know a lot of his films are flawed, but for some reason I always find myself watching movies like Eaten Alive and Lifeforce over and over. I'm kind of obsessed with a lot of stuff he has done, and never thought I would say I would be interested in seeing a remake of any of his films. However, after reading Dean Koontz's version of The Funhouse, I realized how much better that movie could have been. So when I read Eli Roth's idea on how he would want to remake it I was instantly sold. »

Eli Roth Eying Tobe Hooper’s ‘The Funhouse’ For A Possible Remake

10 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I’m about as tired of Hollywood’s seemingly endless stream of remakes as the next movie nut. Surely there are more original stories out there just waiting to be told. Still, when you’re talking about a remake that will mix the sensibilities of directors Tobe Hooper (”The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) and Eli Roth (”Hostel”), I kind of have to sit up and listen.

In a recent — and info-packed! — interview with Fangoria, Roth spilled some details about a potential remake of Hooper’s “The Funhouse.” The only real “news” here is that Roth is “talking” to rights-holders Universal about the possibilities, so don’t take this as anything even approaching confirmation. Then again, fans reading Roth’s comments will hopefully generate enough interest to push those talks into a reality. Want to know what he said? Then read on.

Eli Roth Wants To Remake ’80s Horror Film ‘The Funhouse’

10 June 2009 11:22 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

21st century gore-horror director Eli Roth may have a couple of projects already lined up - a full-length version of his Thanksgiving trailer from Grindhouse and his first sci-fi film Endangered Species - but hasn’t stopped him from piling even more projects on his plate.

In an interview with Fangoria, Roth says he’s currently talking to Universal about remaking Tobe Hooper’s (Poltergeist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) 1981 horror film, The Funhouse.

Known for the ultra-gory content within his movies, Roth is planning to go his usual filmmaking route with The Funhouse remake. The original film follows four teenagers who spend a night in a funhouse at a carnival, and are stalked by a deformed man in a Frankenstein mask. It is said to stand out amongst horrors because it goes out of its way to subtly portray the killer as someone to be pitied as well as feared. »

I'm not exactly sure what it's like on the planet where Eli Roth lives, but I'm sure it sucks because Eli Roth is there. A plus-point though, is probably that he makes a new movie every week there, since he seems to be talking about what film he's gonna make next constantly. This week, it is Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse: .I.m talking with Universal about that one... Eli Roth In Talks With Universal for Funhouse Redo

10 June 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Eli Roth (soon to be seen in Inglourious Basterds ) opened up to genre journalist Alan Jones about a number of projects the Hostel helmer has in the works. The one that made this writer raise an eyebrow is a remake of Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse . About two weeks ago, one of our sources was raising some noise that Universal was kicking around the idea of dusting the property off. Yeah, that's true, and Roth is the one holding the Swiffer. He tells Fango that he's in talks with the studio to develop a remake under his newly-formed Arcade banner which he operates with producer Eric Newman. "It should be about the kids getting killed in horrible ways, put in different contraptions in the funhouse and the final girl being strapped into the ride and sent into the tunnels to... »

Eli Roth Hoping to Enter The Funhouse

10 June 2009 1:01 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Tobe Hooper's under-appreciated slasher opus The Funhouse is a huge favorite here around the Dread Central offices. The flick had it all -- gypsies, sex, good kills, a great location, and most importantly a badass looking monster who wore a Frankenstein's Monster mask until his, um ... unveiling. From our point of view this remake is a no-brainer and it seems as if director Eli Roth feels the same way!

Roth sat down with Fangoria and dropped the following on them:

"I’m talking with Universal about that one,” Roth reveals. “The Funhouse is a movie where the first half is brilliant — they set up these great characters — and then they pay off none of them. Eli Roth Wants to Remake Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse

9 June 2009 11:47 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

As much as I'm looking forward to seeing Eli Roth bring us his sci-fi action flick Endangered Species, we can't forget that he's still a horror director. One of the other projects he's got on his slate is a remake of The Funhouse, a creepy horror film from 1981 directed by Tobe Hooper. Roth revealed to Fangoria that he's currently "talking with Universal about that one." I'm not familiar with the film, but apparently Roth is a big fan - at least of half of it. "The Funhouse is a movie where the first half is brilliant—they set up these great characters—and then they pay off none of them." We'll let him explain what he wants to do in this remake. Eli Roth: Fun in the Cotton Belt

3 June 2009 6:03 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Part Two

Because Eli Roth was going to be in Berlin for six months doing his acting role as Sgt. Donny Donowitz on the Ingourious Basterds shoot (see more details in the first part of this interview here), the Hostel filmmaker told writer/director Quentin Tarantino to make use of him for 2nd-unit purposes if he wanted. “He didn’t, as he has to see every shot of the movie himself,” Roth says. “But he did get me to shoot the German propaganda film-within-the-film Nation’S Pride. I brought my brother Gabriel out to Germany and we filmed 130 shots in two days, during daylight hours, running, gunning and shooting people off tall buildings. It felt like doing [Grindhouse’s] Thanksgiving trailer again, with that same sort of energy.

“Quentin knows me so well and what I can do,” Roth adds, “and one day he said, ‘I don’t want to derail your directing career, »

Exclusive: Talking horror & music with Jamie Madrox of Twiztid

20 March 2009 12:06 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Since the mid-1990’s, Detroit has been the epicenter for a violent brand of music filled with big beats, distorted guitars, and peppered with lyrical tales of all things gruesome and horrific. One of the acts at the center of this movement is Twiztid, who’ve been consistently delivering new material since their official debut in 1998.

Despite the requisite subject matter, having two major-label albums in their catalog, and enlisting horror icons such as Reggie Bannister (Phantasm) to appear in their videos, Twiztid has remained largely off-the-radar for most horror fans.

With the release of their seventh studio album, W.I.C.K.E.D., Twiztid are looking to change that.

Fangoria caught up with Jamie Madrox, who along with Monoxide has been crafting Twiztid into a dark force worthy of it’s name for over a decade.

Funhouse Remake on the Way

18 March 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The Funhouse is one of my all-time favorite Eighties slashers from Tobe Hooper, and hell, if there was interest in remaking even obscure flicks from that era like Prom Night, then I guess we should have seen this one coming.

Bloody Disgusting got word today that Universal Pictures has lined up Strike Entertainment (Dawn of the Dead, The Thing) to produce a remake of the 1981 film that found teenagers being offed one-by-one by a truly insane looking killer in a funhouse.

Writers are being sought out now. Dig on the trailer for the original as a refresher, and order yourself a copy below.

This Just In: Horror Remakes are Big Money

19 February 2009 7:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I really am torn when it comes to horror remakes. On the one (obvious) hand, I like it when movies I dig are left alone. On the other (fanboyish) hand, I do think it's pretty fun to see how the new writers and producers are going to gussy up an older horror flick. Plus if the new version of Friday the 13th leads to a little more attention / respect for the original film...

But with the new Friday choking about $43 million out of the holiday weekend, it leads to an obvious question: Since Jason just re-ignited the whole dang remake game, which titles are next to get tossed into the "do over" machine? Already on the docket for this year (and next) are remakes of The Birds, The Crazies, The House on Sorority Row, It's Alive, The Last House on the Left, Halloween 2, Hellraiser, Motel Hell, Night of the Demons, »

Fright Night Remake... Staked!

7 January 2009 11:02 AM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

For the last couple of years, Sony's Screen Gems has been trying to figure out a way to remake the classic 1985 vampire flick Fright Night. However, writers brought in were (for whatever reason) encouraged to set it in an amusement park (ala Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse), rumor had it because "if you google 'Fright Night', you'll come up with the amusement park ride! That's what kids know!" And by kids, that meant they were aiming for a PG-13 version, a decision solidified by Prom Night's huge opening box-office numbers.

Even original Fright Night writer/director/creator Tom Holland had a lunch with the powers that be to discuss the possibilities a Fright Night resurrection. (He had the idea for a proper sequel.) But again, they were sticking to their amusement park idea! I'm not even sure the version they were developing even had vampires in it. »
