Badasses of Horror: Part Two

22 hours ago | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

See the first part of this article here.

Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens, 1979/86)

Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley is just hanging out on the intergalactic transport ship Nostromo, leading the often-dull life of a Space Teamster, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, her idiot captain decides to land on the remote planet Lv-426 to investigate some stupid distress signal emanating from a crashed spaceship. Now, as we all know, responding to distress signals is one of the top five most insanely boneheaded tactical decisions any science-fiction/horror space traveler can possibly make, but this doesn’t stop Captain Numbnuts from ordering his crew to get their asses down there and dope out the spooky alien wreckage.

Of course, once they go down to investigate, some dumbass crewmember decides it would be totally hilarious to stick his face in one of the strange egglike things he finds in the smoldering wreckage of the derelict ship. »

Review: ‘A Christmas Carol’

6 November 2009 4:30 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Charles Dickens purists, fear not. Robert Zemeckis remains faithful to the beloved tale, all the while putting his own spin on the story. This version is a little more exciting,  and a lot more sinister than previous outings (it also happens to be in 3D),  but I loved it.

I don’t think I really need to spend much time on the plot. Everyone knows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the original curmudgeon who hates everyone and everything and is just downright unpleasant. One Christmas Eve, he is visited by four ghosts;  his former business partner Marley;  the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present, and the ghost of Christmas future.

After seeing himself through the eyes of others that he visits with these ghosts, Ebenezer changes his wicked ways. His long suffering but loyal employee, Bob Cratchit,  has a son who is very ill and the no »

"The Evil Dead" to Be Shown in Theaters Again!

6 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Almost 30 years after its original premiere, "The Evil Dead" will rise again.

Writer-director Sam Raimi's masterpiece starring the memorable Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. So this news from Paste Magazine is truly a delicious treat!

I've only seen "The Evil Dead" in its VHS and DVD formats, so I'm looking forward to watching this fantasy-horror-thriller extravaganza on the big screen.

Paste Magazine tells us:

In 2010, the creators and Grindhouse Pictures will offer midnight showings of the cult classic at select Landmark theaters in the U.S., Mayfair Cinema in Canada, and more venues will be announced after the first of the year.

The always unconventional Campbell has this to say about the release: .Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead . especially on the big screen. I.m really glad it.s back. »

Evil Dead to Rise Again to Theaters in 2010

5 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Before there was Spider-Man, Sam Raimi began his multi-billion dollar career with little more than $375,000 and a script for a schlocky X-rated horror film. But when Evil Dead was released in 1981, its gore and wit garnered it a cult following, amassing box office earnings of $2.4 million in the U.S. and over $29 million worldwide. Its success led to several sequels, a stage musical, and cult fame for its writer-director and its star, Bruce Campbell.... »

WWE Planning Old West Undertaker Origin Movie

4 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve seen a lot of origin stories in the past few years – Wolverine just came out this summer, Magneto may or may not be happening, there is always Superman and of course Batman’s origin has been told several times. Heck, The Hobbit can even be considered an origin story. Ghost Rider was unfortunately given an origin movie that dated back to the old west. I’m a huge fan of Tremors and the 4th movie went back to the old west as well, for an origin story about the subterranean monster worm.

So I understand why studios and copyright holders want to make origin movies on comic book characters and even monsters, but I cannot for the life of me figure out this latest news coming from “wrastlin” news site Lords of Pain. WWE, in a bid to capitalize on one of their brands, is in the process »

The Evil Dead Hits the Big Screen Again in 2010, Bruce Campbell Comments

3 November 2009 11:15 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In the early '80s, an unknown director (Sam Raimi) took a miniscule budget and crafted what would become the cult horror-comedy The Evil Dead. That movie is still fun to watch today for its ingenuity and its ability to juggle both straight horror elements and hilarious satire. But the gruesome dismemberments and multi-colored bodily fluids (not to mention a very disturbing, not-so-subtly-suggestive use of tree limbs) were enough to earn the movie an X rating (changed to an Nc-17 when the X rating was laid to rest in the early '90s).

Raimi has of course reached stratospheric heights since then, crafting two larger-budget sequels and helming the massively successful Spider-Man franchise. Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell went on to relative fame as a cult-movie icon, using his leading-man looks and his impeccable timing to forge a career out of schlocky comedy genre-hybrids, such as Bubba Ho-Tep and the »

‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ Red Band Trailer

2 November 2009 12:36 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Horror and comedy are two of my favorite genres and just like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, I like when they are combined. Last month, Screen Rant writer Ross Miller did a series on horror films that were combined with other genres. One of those combinations was horror plus comedy and the movie he choose was Shaun of the Dead. Other great examples are the always popular Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness with Bruce “The Chin” Campbell.

Well today, courtesy of our friends at Bloody Disgusting, we have a new trailer for the upcoming horror/comedy film Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. If the film is half as funny as the trailer then I am really looking forward to seeing it. The movie stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dodgeball) and Tyler Labine (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) as two redneck hillbillies that want to do nothing more than enjoy »

'The Evil Dead' Coming Back to Theaters

2 November 2009 1:53 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The validity of re-releasing a great film has been proven in the recent past. The Exorcist celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1998 by earning about $40 million, and the practice used to be fairly common. If you're over 30, you probably saw a Star Wars re-release at least once. So when remakes are announced, a lot of our readers wonder why they don't just re-release the classic.

Geek Tyrant reports that The Evil Dead will be put back in theaters in the Us and Canada, courtesy of Grindhouse Releasing, the self-described "undisputed leader in quality exploitation." Perhaps wisely, the plan is to go with midnight screenings for this theatrical run, and with the popularity of that kind of programming, it's a clever move for Grindhouse to pick up the tab on this since so many independent theaters likely already put The Evil Dead in their schedules. »

Justin (Ward Roberts) is an unexceptional guy who works at the usual McJob. His life gets interesting with the arrival of April (Sarah Lassez), an eccentric little cutie whose only apparent possession is a book locked in a box that she carries everywhere she goes. Justin is immediately smitten with her, and before long she moves in and all seems right with the world. But April, see, is a demon, and her fellow minions of evil soon find her and take her back to hell. So lovesick Justin opens her locked box and uses the book, a tome for summoning demons, to call forth Lo (Jeremiah Birkett), a lesser demon of Hell, who must do whatever Justin commands as long as his steadily shrinking pentagram keeps the demon at bay. Justin orders Lo to return April to him, »

Hey, it's Halloween! So how about some of the best damn horror news you'll hear all year long? Raimi and producers Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell gave the go-ahead for a series of Evil Dead revival screenings taking place around the nation starting early next year. "Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead - especially on the big screen," Bruce Campbell said. "I'm really glad it's back. People are gonna be hurt." Oh hell yes! A special screening of the Evil Dead trilogy sold out L.A.'s New Beverly Cinema this summer (I was there!). Hardware (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

30 October 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.

First and foremost is a fine 1.85:1 transfer that holds the hyperstylized, vibrantly hued visual scheme (described by Stanley amongst the extras as “rock ’n’ roll lighting”) extremely well, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio that’s equally aggressive. Stanley’s command of sound and image elevates Hardware above a basic storyline that he freely admits is derivative of any number of past genre films, citing everything from spaghetti Westerns and classic science fiction literature »

The Evil Dead to Get Theatrical Re-Release

30 October 2009 11:11 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Wouldn't it be cool if, instead of producing so many remakes, more Hollywood studios would simply consider re-releasing classic films for limited theatrical runs? I suppose they might not stand to make as much money from a re-release of a movie that doesn't have any of today's hot young stars in it, but on the other hand, it wouldn't cost them that much money either. We've seen a few examples of this over the past few years (The Wizard of Oz [1] and A Nightmare on Elm Street [2], for example), but most of the time it's only for one or two nights. Well, now here's some cool news about a company that's trying to revive the concept of midnight movies with the help of Sam Raimi's very first flick The Evil Dead. According to a press release from Grindhouse Releasing [3], they will be bringing The Evil Dead back to the »

Horror Hero Sam Raimi Reveals His Favorite Scary Movies For Halloween

29 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's the eternal dorm-room debate, the stuff of boozy smack-talking sessions and stony, less-than-coherent arguments: what's the scariest movie of all-time? It's a (sober) discussion we've been having at MTV News as Halloween sneaks up on us and a question we've been throwing out to folks in the film biz who truly know their fright-fest stuff.

When I had a chance to talk with Sam Raimi – he of the many righteous "Evil Dead" pictures – I had to get his thoughts on the matter. The first thing he told me was that the horror genre scares the crap out of him. "It's hard to sit through them," he confessed. "I really enjoy it when I'm in the middle of it, it's just hard to approach the theater." The second thing he said is that he loves them dearly. The third and fourth and fifth and sixth? Those scary movies he cherishes »

Original Evil Dead roaring back to the big screen

29 October 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Grindhouse Releasing has announced that it will return Sam Raimi’s 1983 fright classic The Evil Dead to theaters. The company plans to send the unrated shocker into midnight bookings, similar to its revival of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond a decade ago in partnership with Quentin Tarantino.

Grindhouse’s Bob Murawski, who edited Raimi’s Army Of Darkness, the Spider-man films and Drag Me To Hell, and Sage Stallone recently worked out a deal with the director, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell to give Evil Dead new theatrical exposure. “Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead—especially on the big screen,” Campbell says. “I’m really glad it’s back. People are gonna be hurt.” It’s certainly better than a remake… Grindhouse is currently arranging for playdates in both the U.S. and Canada »
