Actors Weigh In on Lost Stars & Oscar Hopefuls

30 November 2009 11:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When you've glutted yourself on Turkey, must take a break from New Moon reportage, and want to get busy with the Oscar race, it's time to turn the writing work over to the celebs. Both Variety and Entertainment Weekly handed the pens over to the stars recently for two very different reasons -- one, to remember stars we've lost this year like Patrick Swayze, and two, to highlight Academy Award hopefuls in the ever-increasing Oscar race.

Of course, EW wants you to buy the mag, so they're only including one of the movie tributes online, and that's C. Thomas Howell writing about his memories of working with Swayze. The two worked together on The Outsiders all those years ago, and Howell writes: "The one thing that was great about him was also the most irritating fact about him: He was always somehow better than you, no matter what it was you were doing. …

As part of our Late Greats tribute package, EW asked the friends and colleagues to share their memories of the stars we lost in 2009. Patrick Swayze Aug. 18, 1952 –  Sept. 14, 2009 By C. Thomas Howell Most of the people who were close to Patrick called him “Buddy.” He was maybe 30 when we did The Outsiders. And Buddy played the older brother, but he really was the older brother. He was always setting the example of what we should be doing. He always had a guitar slung over his shoulder. The one thing that was great about him was also the most irritating fact …

Batman and Robin, 'Doctor Who' Skeptics, And Judge Dredd In Today's Twitter Report

8 October 2009 10:04 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

I'm not sure what sparked the wave of "Doctor Who" thoughts on Twitter today, but both James Robinson and Eric Trautman got a bad taste in their mouths, and Tom Brevoort had nothing but praise for the show's new logo.

Elsewhere, Lee Grabett posted a peek at his rendition of Batman and Robin from "Batgirl" #5, which is starting to verge on Frank Quitely. You can read what they all had to tweet below while you also find out what excites Brian Michael Bendis about Baltimore, which tweets lost a few followers for Marc Bernardin and what Geoff Johns thinks of Francis Manapul's Flash.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 8, 2009.

Howell Shocked By Swayze Poster Surprise

30 September 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

C. Thomas Howell was left stunned when he received mail from pal Patrick Swayze - because it arrived days after the Dirty Dancing star had lost his battle with cancer.

The actor, who befriended Swayze on the set of their 1983 movie The Outsiders and went on to work with him in other films, had previously asked the Ghost star to autograph a poster from the Francis Ford Coppola classic for his 12-year-old son Dash.

The request went without a response from Swayze, who was busy undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, for months - but now it seems it was one of the last things Swayze did before he passed.

A pal of Howell's says, "Many months ago, Tommy asked Patrick to sign an Outsiders poster for his son. But it was so long ago he'd forgotten."

But the late star proved he hadn't forgotten about his pal - and packaged a signed poster for Howell's kid days before he passed away on 14 September, reports the National Enquirer.

And the heartfelt gift moved Howell to tears as he struggled to come to terms with Swayze's death.

The source adds, "Tommy was truly touched. He told me, 'I've always had a special place in my heart for Patrick. He was like an older brother to me. He was a really great guy.

"Now, every time Tommy and his son look at that poster, they know that Patrick was thinking about them toward the end." …

Swayze's Death Makes Lowe Appreciate Acting

30 September 2009 1:21 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Rob Lowe is glad he is an actor - because he will be immortalised on the big screen like his close pal Patrick Swayze.

The star appeared alongside Swayze in his breakthrough film, Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders, and was left devastated when the star died on 14 September following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

But the tragic news has made Lowe reflect on his own life and appreciate that he will forever be remembered through the films and TV shows he has been in.

He says, "He was like a brother to me. One of the great gifts we get (as actors) is that we live on, frozen in time, forever... Truly, the most fulfilling moments I've ever had are on the stage. If you can't have that as an actor, then you might as well at least have that other great thing, which is immortality." …

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009

By

Alex Simon

All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. From his screen debut in Skatetown, USA in 1979, to his final appearance on television’s "The Beast" as a take-no-prisoners cop, Swayze was an unapologetic good ol’ boy who happened to be a classically-trained dancer, student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and possessor of an Iq that was nothing to sneeze at. In fact, he closely resembled Dalton, his character in …

Rob Lowe on Patrick Swayze: "He Loved Life"

If ya haven't heard, the flick St. Elmo's Fire is being developed into a television dramedy series. Rob Lowe, who costarred in the movie alongside Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy and others, says he wasn't aware of the new project until we asked him about it yesterday at the Emmys. But no biggie, because the Brat Pack flick actually isn't Lowe's top choice to be made for the small screen... "Outsiders is the one they should be doing," Lowe said. "The Outsiders was always my favorite, particularly now with the passing of Patrick Swayze." Director Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 movie adaptation of S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel of the same name …

Mirror/Mirror — “There’s Room For Only One Genius in This Family”

19 September 2009 6:52 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

What is it about the Coppola family that makes the substance of Francis Ford Coppola’s films so often driven by what happens behind a family’s closed doors?

It’s never exactly a positive situation, either: his Godfather trilogy is about the implosion of a family, the fall of a son and an effort to sustain a lineage. The final famous frame of The Godfather is of a door closing Michael Corleone from view of his loving wife, sealing his own doom.

Then there’s the behind the scenes element of his films — the casting of family members such as Talia Shire and Sofia Coppola in her much derided performance in The Godfather Part III (which, if I may go on record, isn’t half as bad as it’s usually said to be). Then there’s Carmine Coppola, Francis’ father, who composed much of the scores for the …

Patrick Swayze's Missed Film Roles

Patrick Swayze passed away on Monday (September 14th) and we are now hearing about some of his lined up movie projects that are being forced to move on without the late actor. "Zombieland" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed to Styd that there were talks with Swayze to make a cameo in their horror-comedy, but due to his illness, it didn't work out. "That was many years ago, before he got sick," explained Reese. "It was [going to be] a Patrick Swayze zombie. [Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg] got attacked by him zombified and we had these wonderful moments where they found a potter's wheel and there's Columbus (Eisenberg) on the wheel and these other hands come up behind him and it's Patrick Swayze the zombie. Ultimately, they fight and Patrick bull rushes Tallahassee (Harrelson) who grabs him and lifts him into the air, a la Jennifer Grey, and smashes him into a pillar." Moviehole is …

Swayze Missed Out On Werewolf Movie

18 September 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Patrick Swayze's cancer battle robbed the Dirty Dancing star of a chance to become a big screen werewolf.

The actor, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday, had been approached to star in First Howl as a movie executive suspected of murder, when he was diagnosed with the disease.

The film would have reteamed the star with C. Thomas Howell, who appeared alongside Swayze in his first big three films, The Outsiders, Red Dawn and Grandview U.S.A.

Clint Morris, who wrote the script for First Howl, reveals Swayze was the perfect choice for the role of Dennis Camrock - and he loved the part.

In a post on his MovieHole.net website, Morris writes, "I couldn’t think of anyone more perfect for the role - and as the film was written as somewhat of a love-letter to the 80s, and the product of the era, everyone was in unison... We all agreed it’d be perfect to have Swayze be a part of it.

"It looked good there for a while. We were talking costumes. We were talking drumming up his lines. But then... he got sick. And suddenly Patrick wasn’t taking on any more parts - not immediately anyway. We let it rest."

The film is now in pre-production with Eric Stoltz and 1980s Brat Pack icon Judd Nelson reportedly starring alongside Howell. …

Discuss: What Kind of Patrick Swayze Fan Are You?

16 September 2009 3:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When I first heard the news that Patrick Swayze had passed away at age 57, my first two thoughts were as follows: Point Break (1991) and Donnie Darko (2001). Those were my two personal Patrick Swayze cult classics, the ones I own on DVD, the ones I can watch again, anytime. But the next thing I saw was a tribute on morning television, and the main clips came from Swayze's biggest hits, Dirty Dancing (1987) and Ghost (1990), two films I do not own on DVD and do not particularly care to see again. Then I looked him up and saw a cornucopia of other titles, ranging all over the map, including a bunch of stuff I had never heard of. There were two I reviewed as a critic, the awful Green Dragon (2001) and the very cool 11:14 (2003).

Howell Pays Tribute To 'Big Brother' Swayze

Actor C. Thomas Howell has added his tribute to the late Patrick Swayze, insisting his co-star in three movies was like a big brother to him.

The former Brat Pack star featured alongside Swayze in Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders in 1983 and the pair went on to star in two more mid-1980s movies - Red Dawn and Grandview U.S.A.

He admits they became very close and he's devastated by the star's passing after losing his battle with cancer on Monday.

He says, "He was a really great guy. He never had children but there were many of us that he took under his wing.

The Wisdom of Patrick Swayze

On Monday, September 15th, 2009, that dancer of the dirty kind, Patrick Swayze, passed away. After a very memorable two-decade career and a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer, we will no longer have a man bold enough to chase a 50-year storm, or chivalrous enough to stop people from putting Baby in a corner.

There’s no need to be sad, though. Swayze stared cancer down and kept on high-kicking until the very end. We also got to learn from the wisdom of the characters he played. You might not realize this, but Swayze left us with some life-lesson gems in his diverse array of movies.

Here are ten quotes you may want to take to heart...

Patrick Swayze: 5 Roles That We Will Never Forget

Patrick Swayze died yesterday after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of fifty seven. But we all know that actors live on in their work, frozen forever at different stages of their lives and their careers.  Some of them, like Swayze, are imprinted on our minds in roles that make them larger than life. That said, we've selected a few of Swayze's most memorable roles... roles that will live on forever. Dirty Dancing First and foremost is Swayze as Johnny Castle in 1987’s Dirty Dancing. The role of the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who finds respect and love as a Catskill resort dance instructor and part time lothario put Swayze on the map. The bad boy with the heart of gold who wins the heart of the doctor’s daughter, Baby, made many people sit up and take notice of an actor who’d been working since 1979. Swayze showed off his …

Dirty Dancing in Hollywood

Everyone has a Dirty Dancing story. This is mine. In the mid-80s, a year out of Oxford University and a year into an investment-banking career at Manufacturers Hanover in London, I decided to dance. I quit my job, packed my bags and moved to Los Angeles. I wanted to cut a rug in Hollywood. My first job was at Triad Artists, Inc., one of the principal talent agencies at the time. Among a large roster of clients, they represented a young actor called Patrick Swayze, best known for his ensemble character work in films The Outsiders and Red Dawn, and for his television part in the miniseries North and South. He was about to start shooting his first movie as a leading man -- Dirty Dancing -- for an indie film company called …
