Funny Homage To Hitch By Fan Boy Truffaut, 9 February 2005
8/10
Author: Hal-900 from WA, USA

Delightful, utterly charming homage to Alfred Hitchcock, and sadly, Truffaut's last movie. It is interesting that Truffaut ended his career the same way his idol (Hitch) did; not with a bang, but with an unpretentious, very funny movie (not unlike Hitch's "Family Plot", here Truffaut seems to be saying goodbye and thanks to his loyal fans). What a great thing is to see a talented filmmaker having a good-old-time! The film's mystery is very easy to guess, but the whole thing is done with a great desire to please the audience. The beautiful Fanny Ardant does her best Ingrid Bergman imitation and Jean-Louis Trintignant seems to mimicking Gregory Peck. Cinematographer Néstor Almendros sure knows how to remind us of Robert Burks and if I didn't know any better I would have said that the music was composed by Bernard Herrmann and not Georges Delerue. Truffaut was not as good as Hitch at hiding plot holes, but who cares, this is a wonderful tribute to the master of suspense, and a reminder of the days when great directors knew how to have fun.
