The best and worst comic book movies of 2009 (and your chance to vote)

21 December 2009 6:10 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

On a recent edition of TV review show Film 2009, presenter Jonathan Ross bizarrely (and erroneously) bemoaned the lack of superhero films this year.

Well, 2008 may have had two blockbusters in the form of Iron Man and the headline-dominating entity that was The Dark Knight but this year certainly hasn't been devoid of superheroes on the screen or, more broadly, comic book movie adaptations.

We've had Watchmen and Wolverine along with a few other titles derived from lesser-known comics, not to mention several big movies that have also crossed over into the comic book realm through printed prequels and tie-ins.

So, let's take a look at this year's comic book movies - and then you get a chance to vote for the one you thought was the worst of the bunch.

First, the films whose characters and/or stories were derived from comics:

New G.I. Joe Cartoon in the Works?

10 December 2009 11:31 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Sometimes news breaks in the oddest of ways…

MTV pointed us to a podcast over at Moonbase 2, where cartoon/video game voice actor Michael Bell (you have to check out his filmography Here) was talking about a particular audition he had just completed…to voice the character of General Hawk in an upcoming G.I. Joe cartoon series!

According to MTV’s report (I haven’t listened to the whole podcast yet), Bell -- who has previously voiced G.I. Joe characters like Duke and Lift-Ticket -- said the following:

“I just read for a character named General Hawk,” said Bell. “I’d love to get it. It’s 26 [episodes]. I’d absolutely love to get it, but I’m not going to kill myself if I don’t get it. But I’d love to get it, it’d be great fun.”

As MTV’s Josh Wigler points out, based on that »

Is There A New 'G.I. Joe' Animated Series In The Works?

9 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Even if "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" wasn't universally embraced by longtime fans of the cartoon, comic book and action figure franchise, those very fans at least had the earlier release of "G.I. Joe: Resolute" — an animated movie written by Warren Ellis — to latch onto.

In fact, the idea of a sequel to "Resolute" is probably more exciting to a lot of fans than a sequel to "Rise of Cobra." While details are still unclear regarding further installments of both projects, it appears that some sort of new animated adventure is in the works for the "G.I. Joe" series.

The Moonbase 2 podcast recently interviewed Michael Bell, the voice actor behind Duke, Major Bludd, Lift-Ticket and other characters from the original "G.I. Joe" television series. During the interview, Bell dropped something of a bombshell by revealing that he'd just auditioned for a role in a new "Joe" series.

TV News: Fringe Gets a Mom, Sheldon Lands a Cougar on The Big Bang Theory, and a New G.I. Joe Cartoon?

9 December 2009 1:58 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While we usually like to post every news story as a separate article, sometimes it’s a lot easier to group shorter stories together.  Saying that, if you’re a fan of Fringe, The Big Bang Theory, or G.I. Joe cartoons, I’ve got some news to share.

The first bit of news comes from Michael Bell (the voice of Duke on the G.I. Joe cartoon series in the 1980’s) via Toynewsi.  In a recent podcast, Bell said he has auditioned for the voice of General Hawk for a brand new 26 episode run of G.I. Joe.  While it is unclear if the new show will be similar to G.I. Joe: Resolute or more like the 80’s cartoon, with voice casting underway, expect an announcement soon.

For fans of Fringe, EW is reporting  Irish actress Orla Brady (pictured after the jump) has landed the role of Peter’s mom/Walter Bishop’s wife on Fringe. »

'G.I. Joe' Rises With A Bang, Denzel Catches A Train And More In The DVD Report For November 3

3 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After weeks of rather lackluster releases ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" being a prominent exception), we finally have a Tuesday jam-packed with first-run titles and notable catalog additions. From the on-screen debut of an elite military team to John Cusack's ode to love, we're covering them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, November 3.

For any child of the '80s, the thought of "G.I. Joe" receiving the theatrical treatment was an intriguing proposition, and one fraught with worry. And for die-hard fans of writer Larry Hama's epic "G.I. Joe" comic book run, it was especially scary. In stark contrast to the campy animated series, Hama infused his 155-issue run with deeply developed character arcs, ever-twisting conspiracies and, to his credit, pulled no punches when it came to violence and death. Which "G.I. Joe" would the film rely on for its story and tone? While producers insisted they'd »

No ‘Masters of the Universe’ for Warner Brothers

10 September 2009 10:19 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It looks like we might be waiting a little longer for another ‘Masters of the Universe’ film.  According to Variety, Warner Brothers and Mattel are parting ways on the adaptation due to differences on the direction of the project.  WB and producer Joel Silver have been working on getting the film completed since 2007.

Mattel is taking back sole rights to the property, while ‘Kung Fu Panda’ director John Stevenson is still on board to helm the film.  No telling who Mattel may turn to to get the project off the ground.  They could be growing desperate, since a ‘Masters of the Universe’ re-adaptation has been in the works for a number of years.  The latest script treatment, titled ‘Grayskull,’ on the project came from Justin Marks, who has also had a script for ‘Voltron’ ending up in development hell.

Warner Brothers No Longer Master of He-Man's Universe

10 September 2009 7:08 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With the box office success of movies based on toys like Transformers and G.I. Joe, the re-invention of another iconic toy line, Mattel's Masters of the Universe, seemed like a no-brainer. But adapting the adventures of He-Man and his battles against the evil Skeletor have proven to be quite the challenge, and it looks like these difficulties have finally taken their toll on Warner Bros. Variety reports that WB and Mattel reached a mutual agreement to let the studio's option on this property expire so that Mattel can take the project elsewhere. But what exactly does this mean for director John Stevenson and producer Joel Silver? Word on the street is that Stevenson will stay attached to the project, but Joel Silver and his company Silver Pictures (being exclusive to WB) will stay behind. More than likely this separation should benefit Mattel in that they'll get the project they want. »

Xbox 360 Review - G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

27 August 2009 10:46 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Nostalgia can be a great thing when done right and reproduced in small doses. For example, wearing a jersey of a legendary basketball, baseball or football player is a welcomed throwback. However, some things, no matter how great, should be left in the past, especially if the person drumming up the old memories doesn’t respect the original work. For children of the 80s, G.I. Joe was one thing – real. Sure, nobody died in the cartoon due to those nifty heat-dodging lasers, but children saw these animated characters as real life Real American Heroes. We forgave the censors for banning blood on TV and knew that the possibility of death was real. Even some members of my team will constantly remind me that in Larry Hama’s original Joe’s comic, Major Blood killed General Flagg. Growing up I always wanted to see a G.I. Joe real life movie. But, »

The new Batman videogame: Does 'Arkham Asylum' deserve all the accolades?

25 August 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Reviewers and gamers are going c-r-a-z-y over Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game, which went on sale today, is terrific: It masterfully weaves together a compelling storyline by veteran Bat-scribe Paul Dini, bone-crunching fisticuffs, vintage Bat-gadgets, oft-neglected detective work, and a satisfying turnout by the Dark Knight’s colorful rogue’s gallery (headlined by a Mark Hamill-voiced Joker). But I'm still surprised by how much attention it's getting. The  shocker, of course, is that the game has risen above the skepticism people usually have with movie- and comic book–licensed games. Just in the last few months, games based on Wolverine, Transformers, Terminator, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, G.I. Joe, and Ghostbusters have underperformed, underwhelmed, or have flat-out flopped. Some of the backlash against these games was overly harsh — I actually enjoyed a lot of them, and I think the majority of the gaming audience didn’t give these games »

Fan Film Friday: The Ballad of G.I. Joe

Though we try to keep things fresh here at the site, especially with our features like Fan Film Friday, sometimes it’s hard to skip over things that are quite well done, even when they aren’t really topical anymore. Though G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is already week-old news, we felt that this week’s fan film needed to be a little musical number from our friends at Funny or Die called The Ballad of G.I. Joe.

Continuing the trend of filling their skits with a who’s who of Hollywood, the Ballad includes names that will pretty much blow your socks off. Names like Alexis Bledel as Lady Jaye, Billy Crudup as Zartan, Zach Galifiankais as Snow Job, Tony Hale as Dr. Mindbender, Vinnie Jones as Destro, Chuck Liddell as Gung Ho, Julianne Moore as Scarlett, Henry Rollins as Duke, Alan Tudyk as Shipwreck, Olivia Wilde as The Baroness, »

Pull of the Week:

Blackest Night #2 – DC – $3.99

A previous Pull of the Week with issue #1, Blackest Night #2 continues the eerie first chapter of this horror tale.

After Hawkman and Hawkgirl have been attacked and killed by the Black Lanterns Elongated Man and Sue Dibny, the Atom desperately begs for Hawkman to pick up the phone unaware of his fate. Over in Gotham, Commissioner Gordon stands atop the police headquarters next to the Bat-Symbol with his daughter Barbara awaiting sunrise before Hal Jordan lands on it as a result of his fight with Martian Manhunter.
