30 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cyber Monday isn't a dirty celebration as the name implies, though it is an excellent opportunity to get some good deals. The electronic answer to Black Friday, Cyber Monday falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving, offering holiday shoppers an avenue to buy products without having to fruitlessly brave the jam-packed malls nationwide. All you need is your computer, an Internet connection and some cash — and the know-how to sniff out a good deal when you see one, of course.

While there's nothing I can do to help you in the funds department, I've got you covered in terms of finding the right deals for movie-related goodies. There's no shortage of excellent shopping opportunities today, but if I was a spending man — which I'm not, but feel free to get me a gift — I'd look into the following Cyber Monday deals.

Syfy has become known not just for cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks but also remakes, or "reimaginings," of several classic films and shows. They had Children of the Corn recently, they had Tin Man (a modern take on The Wizard of Oz), and they have an Alien Nation remake in the works (not to mention Quantum Leap).

They're also doing Alice, which is their take on Alice in Wonderland. Here's the trailer. It premieres December 6.

New Stephen King Short Story Appears in the New Yorker!

3 November 2009 4:17 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Is there an Icons of Fright follower out there who doesn't appreciate some of Stephen King's works?  One of the true Icons, King has just published his newest short story "Premium Harmony" in the New Yorker, to whet his Constant Readers' appetite in anticipation of his new novel, Under the Dome.

Though "Premium Harmony" has echoes of his short story "Children of the Corn," marks a long-awaited return to Castle Rock (he abandoned the town in 1992's short story collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes) and makes a sly reference to Derry, Me's favorite clown Pennywise, it's not a horror story.  As with many of the tales from his last two collections, it's a non-genre story that lacks any notion of the supernatural.  For what it's worth, it's a good story;  I just have my biases toward vampires and other preternatural creatures.

Read the full story here.  You can also get King's …

Director's Cut of Rob Zombie's Halloween II Ready to Go

26 October 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Allow me to bust out the old adage “you can’t polish a turd”. Or can you? You could add six hours of footage to Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, and it would still be 2009’s most unwatchable movie, but hey, that's just my opinion. And yes, I say this as a man who endured the Syfy remake of Children of the Corn this weekend.

Today Zombie announced on his Twitter page that his director's cut is done, stating it will be ”very different than the theatrical version.”

Great.

In a previous interview with Icons of Fright, Rob talked about how the director’s cut focused on a very “fucked up” Laurie. More than what we got? Wow, where do I sign up? I tell ya, I did a double feature of the original Halloween and Halloween II this weekend, and it was a fantastic palate cleanser. I’m in …

Fall Frights: Dagon (Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:56 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 08/02/2002

Horror fans have suffered in recent years, either shelling out 10 bucks to sit through another unnecessary sequel to a dying franchise (Jason X, Halloween: Resurrection), or spending half of that to watch another unnecessary sequel in a franchise that never should have been (Children Of The Corn, Witchcraft) on video. But in this time of sequels and fodder, the team behind the cult hit Re-animator--producer Brian Yuzna, writer Dennis Paoli and director Stuart Gordon--has returned with another H.P. Lovecraft tale, Dagon. While not as memorable or outrageous as the former film, Dagon still manages to deliver enough shocks and laughs to please both die-hard Lovecraft buffs and those looking beyond titles with numbers after them.

The movie starts with …

[DVD Review] The Children

18 October 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I wanted to hate this movie, I really did; in fact, the first thing I did before I even watched the thing was brainstorm some high-larious jokes regarding the hokey tag line, which solemnly reads, "You brought them into this world...they'll take you out." How pleased I was with myself, chuckling quietly as I armed myself with a veritable battalion of besmirching, scathingly funny material. What a fool I was. All of that haughty posturing quickly slipped away after I got about half an hour into the film and was promptly Drop-kicked In The Face With Nausea-inducing Terror.

We're all familiar with the concept of creepy killer kids. It's done entirely too often (Joshua, The Good Son, Orphan, Children of the Corn, Village of the Damned) and only rarely is it done well (The Bad Seed, The Omen, Pet Sematary). Luckily, The Children manages to hold up amongst the best, …

Children of the Corn (2009) - DVD Review

8 October 2009 8:14 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Donald P. Borchers produced the original Children of the Corn and in later years wasn.t very happy with it. He decided to return to corn country and redo the Stephen King short story. Sometimes .He who walks behind the rows. should just stay behind the rows. In 1975, bickering married couple Burt (David Anders) and Vicky (Kandyse McClure) are heading for divorce. That.s pretty obvious from their fighting, but at the moment they.re also heading through Nebraska corn country. They hit a child on the back roads, but it appears that the young boy had his throat slit before he stumbled into the road. They put the body in their trunk and head for the nearest town, Gatlin. …

"You Have The Gift of Sight...." The Drawings of Judeanne Winter Wiley

8 October 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | ChildrenoftheCornMovie.com | See recent ChildrenoftheCornMovie.com news »

"It happened everywhere in Gatlin that day. That's when Sarah started drawing these pictures...."

If you are a fan of Children of the Corn, then you definitely remember this line as it gave light to the horror that was unfolding in the rural, midwest town of Gatlin, Nebraska. As the town's future was foretold by a child's artisitic hand, what many may not know is that the drawings were, in fact, not drawn by a "child" at all. In actuality, the creative task of creating Sarah's visions was given to illustrator Judeanne Winter Wiley. We recently caught up with Judeanne who took the time to talk with us about Stephen King, daytime drawing and surprising friends.

Cotcm - Before we begin, we would like to thank you Judeanne for taking the time talking with us and the fans about your involvement and insights into the production and creation of the original, …

Children of the Corn (2009)

7 October 2009 8:22 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Children of The Corn Directed by Donald P. Borchers In what's being marketed as a "rebirth," Children of the Corn revisits the 80's classic that spawned 6 sequels and countless amounts of children to fear those long weekends in the country.  There's a trend happening again in the Horror genre. A trend that makes a strong case that children are complete creeps.  Not only are they capable of being annoying little brats but it seems that in every town, city, county or home, there's at least one twisted little monster, who in between playing with Trouble the pop-omatic bubble game dreams of popping your skull open and feasting upon the meat of your brain. Word of advice: Don't have kids and don't trust kids, they'll just try to kill you.  Children of the Corn, if anything, reaffirms these wise words as well as gives us the much needed visceral satisfaction of brutal violence towards kiddies, …
