Taken Writer Gets His Next Project

8 December 2009 1:07 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Taken really came out of nowhere. Liam Neeson has played kick-ass characters before, but his performance as Bryan Mills was probably his most kick-ass yet, and much of that can be attributed to kick-ass writing by Robert Mark Kamen, who has been responsible for kick-ass flicks like The Karate Kid and The Transporter. Now, changing gears a bit, Kamen plans to bring back the family epic. According to Variety, CBS Films (honestly didn.t even know that was a studio) has preemptively acquired Kamen.s Vengeance, an action pitch about Italian 20-somethings that Kamen describes as .a contemporary revenge love story.. He compares the film to The Godfather, saying that it echoes that film's themes of family pride and debt. If Kamen can write something even three quarters as good as Taken, then he may be onto something, but comparing his piece to The Godfather right out of the gate …

Taken Writer Plans Vengeance, Movie Likely to be Compared to Taken For All of Eternity

8 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Robert Mark Kamen is an American, who wrote “The Karate Kid” franchise in the ’80s, “Gladiator” (no, not the one with Russell Crowe) and “Lethal Weapon 3″ in the ’90s, before somehow ending up in France polishing English dialogue and making plots somewhat logical for Luc Besson. Okay, pretty much he made Besson’s “shit happens and this is what results” style of movie plotting just a little bit more coherent, which if you’ve seen enough Besson movies, you know is a major challenge. Kamen is also one of the writers, along with Besson, on the Liam Neeson mega sleeper hit “Taken”, and using that success as a launching pad, Kamen has now sold an original pitch called “Vengeance” to CBS Films. “Basically, it’s a contemporary revenge love story — what happens when violence meets love,” Kamen said. “The main characters are 20 and Italian, and there are themes that echo films like ‘The Godfather. …

Will Smith's son kicks his way into the big time

3 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Karate Kid remake takes the fight to China

To the Great Wall of China, where the scion of one of America's foremost acting families prepares to make his leading child debut opposite an icon of the People's Republic, in a coolly anticipated reimagining of one of the most important movies of the 80s.

To wit, Will Smith's boy, Jaden, is to star opposite Jackie Chan in The Karate Kid. Or The Kung Fu Kid, as it is to be known, after Chinese financiers insisted production be shifted from Japan to China. These same constraints appear to have necessitated the rebranding of Mr Miyagi to Mr Han, who is shown in the first on-set pictures released this week looking on semi-indulgently as little Jaden high-kicks his way to centre-stage atop the Great Wall.

Does the casting of Chan presage a movie one would want to watch? Over to the original film's star Ralph Macchio, …

Synopsis: Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith stars in this updated version of the 1980’s film that starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. While the new film will be set in Beijing, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor. Four Images from Karate Kid Remake

2 December 2009 6:36 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Sony has released the first official images of The Karate Kid remake (formerly known as The Kung-Fu Kid). The images, which come to us courtesy of /Film, show Jaden Smith’s character, Dre, training with Jackie Chan’s character, Mr. Han; splashing around with his Chinese girlfriend; and showing off some pretty impressive flexibility.

To be honest, none of these four pictures are particularly exciting to me. I guess I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around why there is a remake of The Karate Kid in the first place. I’m not being ironic or nostalgic when I say that the original Karate Kid is one of my favorite movies to watch. I enjoy the story, the acting is solid, and I like how the movie has a message without pandering to the audience. Plus, you know, it has that Joe Esposito song, “You’re the Best Around. …

First Look: Jackie Chan Trains the Next Karate Kid

1 December 2009 5:19 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Ralph Macchio had Reseda. Jaden Smith gets the Great Wall of China. Assuming the studio didn't commission a body double (you know, like on the Pretty Woman poster), that's Will Smith's 11-year-old son showing major flexibility in a scene from the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. In the action drama, due in theaters next year, Jackie Chan takes on the role of the sage Mr. Han, who will teach Jaden's Dre a thing or two, not only about martial artistry...but about life. Of course, watching the still baby-faced Chan open a can of whoop-ass on the bullies for the first time won't be quite as much fun as seeing the far tamer-looking Pat Morita do the same in …

First Images from the Karate Kid Remake

1 December 2009 11:11 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Here are your first official images from Jackie Chan’s remake of “The Karate Kid”. No more “Kung Fu Kid” name change, then? The remake stars Jaden Smith in the Ralph Macchio role, while Jackie Chan steps into Mister Miyagi’s sandals. The setting has been moved to China, and as you can see from the images below, the Great Wall of China has now become a place for what will no doubt be a kung fu training montage. Directed by Harald Zwart, the film co-stars Taraji P. Henson and is due out June 11, 2010. …

First Pictures Of Karate Kid Remake

1 December 2009 4:40 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Can it ever hope to live up to the standards of the original? Can we even dream that The Karate Kid do-over will crane-kick us in the head the way that first film did? And can Jaden "son of Will" Smith fill Ralph Macchio's shoes? Well, here's a step to answering these important questions: the first official stills from the film. Here we see Jaden as "Dre", the son of a single mother (Taraji P. Henson, we're guessing) who has to relocate to China when his mother's job forces her to move there. Lonely at first, he meets Mr Han (Jackie Chan) who teaches him karate and becomes an unlikely friend via the medium of waxing on and waxing off. Then, we're saying, he ends up crane-kicking the local bully into the middle of next week. The Karate Kid is out here on July 16, 2010, so you've got plenty of …

First 'The Karate Kid' remake images roll in

30 November 2009 11:08 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Columbia Pictures is currently making an unnecessary remake of "The Karate Kid," and the first pictures from the upcoming adventure have surface on the Web. Check out some of them above and below.

The film, a remake of John G. Avildsen’s 1984 version, follows a bullied boy (Jaden Smith) who learns all there is to know about karate with the help of an enthusiastic mentor (Jackie Chan).

The original “Karate Kid” was followed by three sequels. As terrible as this may sound, we'll probably see more remakes if this one ends up scoring big at the box office. I hope that won't happen though. …

More Images Show Jaden's Kung Fu In The Karate Kid Remake

30 November 2009 6:29 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After complaining about the lack of action in the first official photo from The Karate Kid remake, three new photos have surfaced and, sure enough, they are far more exciting. The first features Jaden Smith showing off a painful looking high kick. The second is Smith.s Dre with Jackie Chan.s Mr. Han atop the Great Wall of China. Clearly a major benefit of taking the film from California to China is some beautiful scenic shots. Lastly, we get a peak at the young girl who steals Dre.s heart. Smith is only 11, but the movie needs a new Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), the lady that catches Daniel Larusso.s eye in the 1984 original! Now, all we.re missing is a look at the new Cobra Kai, the students of Li Quan Ha.s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu. …

First Official Image From The Karate Kid Remake

30 November 2009 2:54 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Karate Kid remake is coming whether you like it or not and People has the first official still from the movie for you to check out. It features Jaden Smith as Dre Parker, an American boy forced to move to China. There, he befriends not Mr. Miyagi, but Jackie Chan.s Mr. Han, a maintenance man who teaches Dre karate. Sadly, the photo doesn.t show the guys in action but, rather, having a sentimental moment. Smith says he had to go through four months of training with the film.s fight coordinator, Master Wu, in order to be prepared to step into Ralph Macchio.s shoes. Chan said Smith was all business and had a great attitude. .He took the training very seriously. I was very impressed with him." We all know Chan has some ass-kicking abilities of his own and he was more than willing to share …

First (Official) Look at 'The Karate Kid' Remake - Updated with More Photos

30 November 2009 1:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Update: Check out three more images in the gallery below.

The initial trauma over Columbia's remake of The Karate Kid seems to have passed for the children of the 1980s, enough that the first official image (not counting the teaser poster Erik Davis posted in September) shouldn't be salt in the wound. Instead, you might be thinking "Hey, for the first image of The Karate Kid, shouldn't there be, you know ... karate?" Yes, yes there should. But instead People Magazine gave us a tender look between the new kid, Jaden Smith, and his mentor, Jackie Chan. 1980s children will be relieved to know that his name isn't Mr. Miyagi, but Mr. Han, and he's a maintenance man who befriends the troubled and unhappy boy who's been relocated to China. He also can kick major ass.

Smith and Chan give a few excited quotes for Kid. Smith reveals he trained for …

Some photos from the reboot of The Karate Kid have arrived for your pleasure. Wait...pleasure is definitely the wrong word to use here. I don't really want to hate on this since it's not really aimed at my demographic. It's possible that there will be a million kids who will love it, and want to grow up to be awesome ninjas. I'm just glad that my Karate Kid was the one from '84 with the classic, 'Wax on, Wax off' line. Only was it that later in life I realized I could use that line for my …

First Official Photos of The Losers

25 November 2009 6:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Two photos from Warner Bros. comic book adaptation The Losers have made their way online.

The film’s log line is as follows:

After being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination.

Click the images to enlarge.

Whilst the comic itself is quite cool and the talented cast includes Jeffery Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Idris Elba (RocknRolla), Chris Evans (Sunshine), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), and Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid), I have been very skeptical about this project since Sylvain White took over directing duties.

If you are not familiar with White’s work, he is the man responsible for the atrocities known as Stomp the Yard and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. I will reserve judgement on The Losers until I actually watch the film, or at least a trailer, …

Today's Short: "Turbo"

16 November 2009 5:56 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A self-proclaimed hybrid of The Karate Kid and Tron, Turbo has the feel of a movie made for the 80's generation, but with an apparent love for 90's gaming world—particularly how it has shades of Tekken and Street Fighter in its blood, as well as the arcade setting. Starring Justin Chon (Twilight) and Jocko Sims (Crash series), it's a fun little sci-fi fighting movie that boasts some pretty impressive production value.

Veteran's Day, 'Precious' And 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' In Today's Twitter-Wood

Veteran's Day brought no shortage of veteran appreciation today in Twitter-Wood, prompting thanks and memories from across the board, as well as a personal note from "Twilight" actor Gil Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Jason Schwartzman's on his way to the NYC debut of "Fantastic Mr. Fox," which as a Wes Anderson follower, I am anxious to see myself this weekend. Another new release, "Precious," really got a hold of Tyrese Gibson, who said the film's been keeping him awake. Check out their thoughts along with pictures from Peter Facinelli and John Stamos and a Henry Winkler autograph to be jealous of after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 11, 2009.

25 Most Disturbing Movies #3: Last House on the Left

10 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | GreenCine | See recent GreenCine news »

Continuing Simon Augustine's countdown of the Most Disturbing Movies (Read Part 1 for the first 13). [<< #4]

3. Last House on The Left (1972) 8/10

In the horror genre, Last House on The Left is the seminal modern Disturbing Film; it was to the downer hippie crowd sliding out of the bad trip of Vietnam what Psycho was a decade earlier to audiences covering their eyes during the shower scene. A gang of drugged-out killers, lead by Krug (David Hess, one of the standout exploitation roles of all time; far too convincing) drags a pair of upper class girls to the woods of suburban Connecticut after the teenagers are ensnared going to the big city to see a rock band. They proceed to viciously humiliate, rape, and dismember them in some of the grimmest and unsettling scenes ever put to celluloid.

Based loosely on Bergman's The Virgin Spring, Last House has slapstick “comic-relief” cop scenes (with a young Martin Kove, …

Is The White Shadow Coming Back To TV?

27 October 2009 2:02 AM, PDT | The Humor Mill | See recent The Humor Mill news »

Our sources have revealed to us that there is going to be a new version of the very short lived but popular 1978 dramatic series The White Shadow coming to television, and with a new name.

In case you are not familiar with the series The White Shadow, it starred Ken Howard as Ken Reeves, a white former NBA professional who retired from the pro game and got a job as a basketball coach in a predominantly black inner-city high school. The series developed into how a white coach tried to teach his players about life, and how to deal with real life issues.

Anyway, we hear the new series is co-executive produced, written by and directed by actor Larry B. Scott (of Revenge Of The Nerds fame and The Karate Kid fame), with the show to be titled My New Life. The show is still rounding out the new cast …

Buy This: 'Karate Kid' Shower Halloween Costume

16 October 2009 11:32 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Those familiar with my wild, suburban antics behind the scenes of Cinematical will know that I have a small, unhealthy obsession with The Karate Kid. Perhaps it's because the film first hit theaters right as I was heading toward that childhood sweet spot where films stick to your heart and soul and wind up growing up a part of you. Or maybe it's because I've always connected with Daniel Larusso since, as teenagers, we were both wimpy skinny kids with thick New York/New Jersey accents who, for one reason or another, were forced to deal with a group full of a**holes during our high school years.

Either way, it's an awesome movie -- and whenever Halloween comes around, I always make my lady crazy by insisting that I must were Daniel's shower costume to whatever lame Halloween party she decides to drag me to. Unfortunately, I've never worn it, …
