Schwarzenegger Terminated By Tax Office

15 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Tax officials in California have Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in their sights - the actor-turned-politician allegedly owes them nearly $80,000 (£50,000) in unpaid charges.

The Terminator star, who has been Governor of California since 2003, is said to have fallen behind in his payments from 2004 and 2005.

According to papers filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court, and obtained by TMZ.com, Schwarzenegger owes America's Internal Revenue Service (IRS) $39,047 (£24,404) from 2004 and $40,016 (£25,010) from 2005.

Schwarzenegger is the latest in a string of celebrities facing tax woes - pop star Aaron Carter was recently hit with a staggering $1 million (£625,000) bill, while Outkast rapper Big Boi is facing a $55,727 (£34,829) payment. »

2009 – The Year Good Filmmaking Died?

26 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

A week ago, The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened in theatres all over the world. Based on the best selling book of the same name, and sequel to a popular and lucrative first movie, it was always going to open big. What in fact happened, was that it registered the third highest Us movie opening ever, with around $150M in it’s opening weekend domestically, behind Spiderman 3 and Dark Knight.

It currently holds a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the number one review collection website. So how can a film that has been rated so badly amongst film critics have made so much money already? Does no-one even read reviews anymore?

This situation isn’t unusual in the Hollywood movie industry, and this year in particular has seen a lot of big turkeys make a lot of big money. It didn’t start off too badly. Watchmen cost a lot of money to make, »

Movie theme tunes: my heart will go on, even if my ears don't recover | Ben Child

25 November 2009 9:58 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Jennifer Hudson isn't just starring in a Winnie Mandela biopic, she's singing the title track too. Leona Lewis is doing warbling duties on James Cameron's Avatar. Make sure to leave before the credits roll ...

As the credits rolled on the first Spider-Man movie in an east London cinema sometime in May 2002, it would have taken a disaster of Green Goblinesque proportions to dampen my ebullient mood. As a childhood fan of the comic books and a lover of all things Sam Raimi, the superhero blockbuster was like manna from heaven to my geekboy soul.

And then, suddenly, as if I were being mocked from on high, Chad Kroeger started singing. Yes, the same Chad Kroeger who fronted abominable Nirvana-lite quintet Nickelback, he of the appalling rocker ringlets and grunge-ain't-dead facial hair. In earnest tones, Chad bawled out lyrics about heroes and eagles' wings, worlds full of killin' (and blood spillin' »

New Interactive Avatar Trailer Containing 11 Featurettes

25 November 2009 1:06 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

There’s a new interactive trailer for James Cameron’s much anticipated epic sci-fi adventure available over at the official Avatar website. The trailer itself is not available for online viewing in its interacting form as it has to be downloaded and run with Adobe Air. Whilst the actual trailer contains nothing we haven’t already seen, there is a total of eleven featurettes accompanying the trailer as part of the interactive process and they contain some incredible footage.

I hope you’ve got your Imax 3D tickets ready, because the man who perfected the idea of the “blockbuster movie” with films like Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Titanic is back after a twelve year hiatus. Michael Bay and McG are going to have to stop their petulant playground bickering about who has the bigger equipment and get their notebooks out, because school is almost back in session.

Review: iTunes 99p Rental – The Terminator

24 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Every week Apple offer a film for rental at a discounted price of 99p on iTunes. For several weeks, the selections were pretty poor. Then last week saw a quality jump, with Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake.

Would this week continue the improvement? The answer would be a resounding yes, as to coincide with the DVD release of Terminator: Salvation, we’ve been treated to James Cameron’s 1984 classic, the original The Terminator.

In the future, a post-apocalyptic war rages on, as small pockets of human resistance fighter struggle for survival. The predators intent on their destruction are man’s own creation, machines. Robotic soldiers pursue what remains of our race, the genocide of an entire species almost complete. One man (Arnold Schwarzenneger) is sent back, through time, to before the civil war began. He begins tracking down all the Sarah Connors in the phonebook eliminating them one by one. »

The apocalypse goes "1970s pop sci-fi" in The Arcadian

24 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Arcadian is an upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure that follows actor J. Larose (of Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame) as an enigmatic warrior called "The Lighthouse Keeper" who goes on a quest for "revenge and redemption in a strange future world" we're told is "reminiscent of wild 1970s pop sci-fi."

Inspired in equal parts by samurai movies, rock operas, and underground comics, we're told that the visual world of The Arcadian will be an homage to the work of underground illustrators and be something quite unique due to the fact that it was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II camera - chosen for its unparalleled low-light sensitivity.

The Arcadian has just wrapped principle photography and is heading into an intense round of post. It is due Q2, 2010.

To make up for the fact that we have no detailed plot synopsis yet, we've included a »

Terminator Salvation: Director's Cut Blu-ray Review

23 November 2009 11:52 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Terminator Salvation comes to Blu-ray with an unfortunate chip on its shoulder. After director McG informed the media that the high definition version would run over 30 minutes longer and be slapped with the fan requested R-rating, Warner delivered the final specs that held up on the rating but fell about 90 percent short on the additional footage.

The fourth installment in the Terminator lexicon is as much a reboot as a continuation, shuffling the entire cast and setting the film in a post apocalyptic Judgment Day world where Skynet rules and humans scavenge for life's necessities in order to survive. A war-grizzled John Connor (Christian Bale) is the central character, the prophesied savior of mankind whose very existence Skynet is willing to travel through time to extinguish. He is not quite the Resistance's leader yet but makes up for any lack of authoritative control by barking commands in the familiar low gruff Batman monotone voice. »

Joss Whedon to be Honored by Producers Guild

23 November 2009 10:35 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Joss Whedon seems to be the jack of all trades.  Fox can cancel as many of his shows as that they want, but other people are still lining up to give him awards and accolades.  Ok, maybe not lining up, per se, but there's at least one organization that is honoring him.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) will be presenting Whedon with the 2010 Vanguard Award at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Sunday, January 24, 2010.  The award is meant to recognize those with achievements in new media and technology, so it's likely that he's getting it for his efforts in branching out into new internet media with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (though it's likely meant to honor a culmination of his achievements).  Past winners of the award include George Lucas, James Cameron and John Lasseter.

Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for such hit television programs as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer, »

Inside James Cameron's Head: Avatar, F-Bombs, and Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

23 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron, a biography of the director by former Time magazine Hollywood correspondent Rebecca Keegan, starts with the director's ancestors in Scotland and takes readers through post-production on the much-ballyhooed Avatar. The book hits stores December 15, the week the movie is released. Keegan told FastCompany.com about the man behind the camera, his inventive use of the F-word, and why Avatar is unlike any movie you've ever seen.

Tell me how the concept of the book came about and what fascinated you about Cameron at the time.

I visited the Avatar set in early 2008 for Time, and it was like no other movie set I'd been on. Normally there are tons of people, costumes, makeup, and props--all on a grand scale. This just looked like a weird post-modern play because it was so spare--it was in a real warehouse, but only had the »

The Making of The Wolfman

20 November 2009 11:04 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A few days ago Variety reported (you kind of have to mine for it in the article) that veteran editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch were being brought in to recut The Wolfman, even though the release date is only a few months away, on February 12, 2010. This could be a very bad thing for the film, culminating in what has already been a tumultuous creation process, but it could be a good thing. Films can often be made in the editing room, and both editors have had extensive experience. Goldblatt has edited such films as Terminator 2 and Pearl Harbor, while Murch worked on The English Patient and Cold Mountain, winning an Oscar for sound editing in Apocalypse Now. The point is, I hope that the film has a chance to succeed because it still looks very cool. The featurette below has some behind the scenes footage and interviews, which increases my excitement for the film. »

Sam Worthington In Yet Another Sci-Fi Film

19 November 2009 10:50 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Terminator Salvation, Avatar, and now The Last Days of American Crime – Aussie actor Sam Worthington seems to have certainly found his genre in Science fiction!

Based on the Radical Publishing comic, The Last Days of American Crime has a pretty original – if sinister twist on the traditional heist movie, Mania has more:

The comic book, created and written by Rick Remender and illustrated by Greg Tocchini, is a heist thriller told against a sci fi backdrop. In a near-future America, news has broken that, in a matter of weeks, the government is set to roll out mind-control technology that will kill the criminal impulse in all citizens. Chaos descends on America’s cities as the country braces for the new order. Career criminal Graham Brick is forced to accelerate the heist of his career with an untested new crew in order to beat the deadline. What could possibly go wrong? »

'Avatar' Star Sam Worthington Signs On For 'Last Days Of American Crime' Adaptation

19 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Terminator: Salvation” star Sam Worthington has signed on to appear in the film adaptation of Rick Remender's upcoming miniseries “The Last Days of American Crime."

Created and written by Remender with artist Greg Tocchini, “Last Days” takes place in the near future where the U.S. government is about to implement a new technology that will make it impossible for anyone to commit a crime. Following the revelation of this plan, a downtrodden career criminal named Graham Brick is forced to quickly assemble a team to help him pull off what may be the last heist in American history.

According to Mania.com, Worthington will portray Kevin Cash, a safecracker recruited by Brick who may be a dangerously unstable sociopath.

After his turn as the Human/Terminator hybrid Marcus Wright in last summer’s “Terminator: Salvation”, Worthington’s next film will be the hotly anticipated “Avatar” by director James Cameron. »

I'm almost Afraid of the Comments this French 'Avatar' Poster Will Receive

18 November 2009 11:16 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Coming Soon debuted the French poster for James Cameron's Avatar, which is featured at the bottom of this post and I won't be surprised if it gets a rough reception from readers.

I've started to realize where this film is going to find its largest group of detractors, people expecting James Cameron's Aliens or Terminator 2 films. Instead, Avatar looks like it is gearing up for a family-friendly appeal. I recently opened the door to the possibility of the film getting a PG-rating, which many people were none too happy about and then just yesterday I received the following email from a reader named 'Az': I have news that Avatar will most likely be rated PG due to the fact that McDonald's will be having tie-in toys for the movies' release. McDonald's always has toys based on movies rated PG or below. If Burger King had the tie-in toys it »

Two New Editors for Universal's Wolf Man

18 November 2009 10:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Universal's upcoming The Wolfman re-imagining has been bogged down for the past three years by countless production setbacks, constantly changing release dates, a new director, and most recently the loss of their composer Danny Elfman. What else could happen with Wolfman that hasn't already happened? They could bring in two new editors, that's what. The relentless news excavators over at /film dug up this news out of the gutter of a Variety article not even about the movie. It looks like Mark Goldblatt, action editor extraordinaire, and Walter Murch, the man who literally wrote the book on editing, will come on to Joe Johnston's movie and try to clean it up a bit. A Goldblatt/Murch pairing is certainly an interesting one, with Goldblatt working such action pieces as Armageddon, Bad Boys 1 & 2, and both Terminator films, and Murch handling slightly more dramatic pieces like Cold Mountain and The English Patient. »

Veteran Editors Being Brought in to Save Universal's Wolfman

18 November 2009 10:10 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Universal has had plenty of frustrating, worrisome and even recent problems with Wolfman and it looks like they're still reeling from them, as new info buried deep in a Variety article (found by SlashFilm) says editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch have been brought in to help salvage this monster movie that has really become a monster in itself. While I'm wondering how much involvement director Joe Johnston has in these decisions, and exactly how close this is to resembling the original vision for this film, Goldblatt and Murch will be fresh eyes on the project and their extensive editing work speaks for itself. Read on! Goldblatt has had quite the experience in the editing chair having put together both of James Cameron's Terminator films, as well as putting together the frantic, abundance of dailies from director Michael Bay's films like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile, Murch has »

Top Editors Brought In to Re-Cut The Wolfman

18 November 2009 9:47 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Of all the big films on the docket for next year, the one I’m most concerned about is The Wolfman. The second trailer for the film looked pretty badass, I’ll admit – but this movie has suffered a plagued production from the get-go. A change in directors, callbacks for reshoots and re-designs in the creature effects… It all points to a studio trying to turn lead into gold through the usual movie alchemy.

Well, the guys over at Slash Film must have magnifying glass eyes, because they spotted something deep-six buried in an article over at Variety, which names editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch as the two guys hired to do a recut of The Wolfman!

This revelation comes without the usual fanfare from the blogosphere that goes with every little development on a major movie – suggesting that the studio is trying to keep the continuing problems with »

New Editors Hired for The Wolfman; French Trailer Released

18 November 2009 5:07 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Buried deep inside a Variety piece, SlashFilm found news that Universal has hired editors Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now) and Mark Goldblatt (The Terminator) to recut Joe Johnston's The Wolfman.

The release date for The Wolfman has already been rescheduled several times, but the move to put the movie out in February was clearly done so that Murch and Goldblatt could have some time to fix things. The two editors likely will be cutting together footage from six weeks of reshoots completed over the summer, mostly supervised by second unit director Vic Armstrong.

Already, the work of the two editors has the movie looking more historic in the new French trailer, shown below ...:

Ok, we admit that's the trailer for the 1941 original. It might be a little while before any work from Murch and Goldblatt will be seen in trailers, if at all. The "new" French trailer is nothing »

More Wolfman Crew Shuffling as New Editors Are Brought In

17 November 2009 6:21 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

And Universal's The Wolfman continues down a bumpy road toward its February 12, 2010, release date. On the editing front Dennis (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Fog-2005 version) Virkler is apparently out, and Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch are in.

Goldblatt started out strong with The Howling, Halloween II, The Terminator (1 and 2), and he most recently worked on X-Men: The Last Stand and G-Force. Murch did editing and sound work on such diverse fare as Apocalypse Now, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Godfather: Part III, and Jarhead.

The news was somewhat buried in a Variety article, but /Film did a good job fleshing it out. At this point we can only wonder about director Joe Johnston’s day-to-day involvement with the picture after all the myriad changes it's undergone, and as more details are made available, we'll pass them on.

Zack Whedon Writing New 'Terminator' Series For Dark Horse

16 November 2009 12:49 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The Terminator franchise made comics news earlier this year when "Terminator: Salvation" spawned releases for the iPhone and iPod touch from Idw. Now, Zack Whedon says his work on a "Dr. Horrible" comic has inspired him to write more for the medium, and his next step will be bringing new "Terminator" stories to comics from Dark Horse.

"I am currently working on a six issue 'Terminator' series for Dark Horse," Whedon revealed in a column for Techland.com. "I just turned in the first script and I’m very excited about it."

The younger brother of "Astonishing X-Men" writer and "Dollhouse" creator Joss Whedon spoke enthusiastically about finding more things to do in comics during his bullet-pointed op-ed piece for Time, Inc.'s new gadgetry and geek culture site. He also professed an affinity for the world begot by James Cameron for film in 1984.

Cameron Receiving Ves Lifetime Achievement Award

15 November 2009 8:05 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Visual Effects Society announced at the end of this week that just a few days before the Academy Awards, it will present James Cameron the Ves Lifetime Achievement Award. That's pretty much imposible to argue against, don't you think?

Animation World Network has the entire press release, if you're interested, but here's what you need to know: The Ves Board of Directors picks an artist whose career has made a major impact on the art and science of the visual effects arena. Cameron, more than most directors - even those who do a lot of work in science fiction - has always been ahead of the curve. Think about the first two Terminator flicks and The Abyss, plus Titanic, which at the time was a pretty astounding feat.

There's little question, even if Avatar isn't a great film, that the effects and the 3-D won't shake up everything in a pretty big way. »
