Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Tom Holland discusses his screenplay for Richard Franklin's Psycho 2

Following in my ongoing, loving analysis of one of my all time favorite films Fright Night (see my original, personal essay here and my interview with musc supervisor David Chackler here), I present part one of a lengthy conversation I had with Fn's creator, writer/director Tom Holland.
Holland spent the early part of his professional life as an actor under the name Tom Fielding. starring in soap opera's, various TV programs and - my favorite - director Jacques Demy's Model Shop. Then, into the 1970's the struggling thesp decided to take back his given surname and pursue a career as a screenwriter.
His breakthrough theatrical release was Phillipe Mora's bizarre exploitation shocker The Beast Within, a picture that nailed the psychosexual tone of Holland's words but opted to veer into more visceral, bladder FX driven shlock. He followed that with the ultra violent screenplay for Mark Lester's cult classic Class Of 1984.

Blood Energy Potion (Product Review)

Blood Energy Potion might not be a descriptive-enough name for the little plastic bag of red liquid that showed up on my doorstep. It’s a beverage poised between energy drinks and vampire-themed novelties, skewing to the latter with a container designed to resemble an IV bag and an ad campaign addressing "control of your blood-lust." The idea is that if you have a craving to drink another human being’s blood, maybe instead of devoting yourself to the extensive planning required to stay out of jail for it, you should take a breath and suck some of this instead.
Having had a mouthful of everything from the soft-drink version of Tru Blood (Capsule review: ever make your own soda when you were a kid using seltzer water and orange juice? Tastes like that) to Ben Nye’S Edible Prop Blood (to quote The Lady Aye, “Tastes like hell and mint,

Two more names have been added to the cast of Adam Green's sequel to his original bloodbath, Hatchet 2 and we couldn't be happier!
Shock Till You Drop learned exclusively today that both J Bowen (The Signal, The House Of The Devil) and Tom Holland (the director of Fright Night) are the latest additions to the cast of the production which begins shooting early January.
Bowen will be playing Layton a hunter who Green tells Shock, "is part of a group that Reverend Zombie (Tony Todd) hires to go into the swamp to kill Victor Crowley."
Tom Holland will play Marybeth's Uncle Bob, the brother of Robert Englund's character from the first film and one of the lead roles of Hatchet 2. "Fright Night is a big influence on me," says Green. "And from conversations I've had with Tom about that movie, he clearly gets how to make humor work with horror.

The Sound of Fright Night: An Interview with David Chackler

A few weeks ago I peeled open my rib cage to reveal my raw, beating heart and the sound of that heart was (to the tune of “thump-thump, thump-thump”) : Fright-night, Fright-night, Fright….
Yeah, I worship writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire gem and I fly that fanged flag with pride.
But outside of the ace performances from Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, outside of Holland’s sharp, affectionate script and tense – yet playful – direction and outside of Richard Edlund’s gorgeous special effects, one of the major hooks that Fright Night jabbed into me was the soundtrack, a sexy, atmospheric synth score by Brad Fiedel and a motley collection of 80’s pop and metal tunes that fit the material perfectly, almost as if they were written specifically for the action on screen.
Well, it turns out for the most part, they were.
See, shortly after I published

The news plenty of horror fans have been looking forward to finally broke this morning ... Adam Green will be returning to the ground that put him on the map to write and direct Hatchet 2. Of course, we dug a little deeper and got you guys some more info beyond the surface stuff.
"It was never a matter of money, just timing," Green tells us. "We wanted to make sure that everyone involved with the first film could come back before any of us committed. By the time the first one came out, we were all just exhausted. It took two years. Being that the film was successful, everybody wanted us to do a sequel immediately, but again -- we were all Hatcheted out! We didn't want to make a Hatchet movie just to make a Hatchet movie. Is This the Story for the Fright Night Remake?

The remake to Tom Holland's 1985 Fright Night has gone through an interesting metamorphosis. There's no telling where new hire Marti Noxon ( Mad Men , Buffy the Vampire Slayer ) will take the story for Dreamworks, but I've been privy to some interesting intel regarding the pitch the producers were kicking around up until about a month ago.
Sources tell me the new Fright Night was going to take a meta approach and acknowledge the existence of Holland's film. And like the original, the Charley Brewster-like protagonist would need to enlist some help to take on a vampire menace. Because we're living in sad times where horror hosts are a rare breed and are all but foreign to the Scream generation, however, the film's hero wouldn.t be calling on Peter Vincent (essayed in the

The Hollywood Reporter just announced that former Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner Marti Noxon has been tapped by Dreamworks to write the remake of '80s vampire fave Fright Night. Noxon's served as writer or producer on a lot of recent critical darlings, everything from Prison Break to Mad Men, but lest we forget -- she was once responsible for some of the worst Buffy episodes ever.
Under Noxon's tenure as executive producer during Buffy's sixth and seventh seasons, the show took a definite nosedive. Lame, one-dimensional villains like season 6's Nerds of Doom and season 7's The First were introduced, scripts obsessed over Spike to the detriment of the show's

Ever since it was resurrected by Dreamworks in May, the remake of Fright Night, the 1985 horror comedy from director Tom Holland, has been striking fear into the hearts of fans across the web. The project was originally set up a Screen Gems, but it died a slow, painful death due to a desire to stray too far away from the original film's plot and tone. But at Dreamworks, they appear to be keeping the original horror/comedy vibe from the first one, and in order to do so they've placed screenwriting tasks in the capable hands of Marti Noxon.
Noxon, who has most recently served as a writer on Mad Men, has the right kind of pedigree needed to bring the story of a kid who discovers this his next-door neighbor is a vampire to life. She served as a writer, and for a short time as showrunner, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

‘Mad Men’ writer on board for ‘Fright Night’ redo

Marti Noxon (Mad Men) has signed on for the upcoming remake of the ’80s horror classic Fright Night.
In May, DreamWorks stated that the update on Fright Night will be an update to the 1985 film. Noxon’s version will retain the original tone from the first film while merely using current technology to upgrade its special effects.
Noxon serves as producer on the Emmy-award winning drama on AMC. He also served as a writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer along with its short-lived spin-off Angel.
William Ragsdale stared in the original Fright Night which was written and directed by Tom Holland. The main character discovers that he has a vampire as a neighbor. Huzzah. The original also starred Roddy McDowell.
No word on casting on the project.

'Fright Night' Remake Lands 'Mad Men' Writer

I wish Fright Night held up better. For about 15 years, the 1985 cult classic did skate by on the strength of its story and its complete eightiesness. That's not a word, and yet you know what it means. But as technology, horror movies, and horror fans have advanced in the past decade, moving from slick 1990s pop slasher flicks to darker tales from all around the world, Fright Night is one of those that just looks a little out of place now.
I'm hopeful that Marti Noxon, a Mad Men writer-director, can breath new life into the film now that DreamWorks has hired her to write the remake. If the Mad Men connection doesn't do it for you, know this: Noxon was also a writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. At least one of those had something to do with making bloodsuckers hip again.
