Movies are the Best Medicine

8 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

One of best things about movies is that they have a powerful ability to affect us on many levels, and we each have our own personal experiences where a movie has lifted our spirits.

This is a one of those stories from Paul Collett, a good friend of the site, on how Michael J. Fox, Luke Skywalker and Buzz Lightyear once teamed up to help him through a tough time.

About a year ago I had a week off work with some kind of virus which meant I couldn’t or perhaps shouldn’t leave the house, and as the boredom set in the inevitable search through the DVD collection started. To my delight I found Teen Wolf, a present bought for me one Christmas from my best bud Jon (you may know him if you’re regulars to the site), I watched it and utterly enjoyed it, despite the »

Why Aren't Werewolves as Popular as Vampires?

30 October 2009 2:17 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Benicio Del Toro as The Wolfman, one of several werewolf movies in the making. In the cobwebbed stable of classic movie monsters, the vampire occupies the premier position. He leads in Halloween costumes, remakes, and magazine think pieces. Meanwhile, the werewolf, while not as marginal as the Invisible Man or whatever lurks in the Black Lagoon, is clearly not A-list. Or at least he hasn’t been for a long time. That could soon change. Lycanthropes run wild in New Moon, opening November 20, and the big-budget remake of The Wolf Man, whose trailer shows serious promise, arrives early next year. There are several other wolf-themed entertainments on the way, including an MTV series reworking Teen Wolf and, most tantalizingly, Jack and Diane, a lesbian werewolf film set in New York with Olivia Thirlby and Alison Pill. (The project has been delayed, but will hopefully still happen.) With this wild pack galloping toward us, »

Wear This: Three 'Teen Wolf' Moon T-Shirt

24 October 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I wouldn't say that we here at Cinematical have a full-blown addiction to clever wearable movie tie-ins, but I would say that we have a totally healthy, totally unrequited infatuation with movie themed t-shirts. And though we may not be pledging our love to Keyboard Cat on a film site (hey, Hollywood, when is the hugable maestro getting his biopic?), we do have a fair admiration for Internet memes as well. And now we finally get to combine the two with the brand new Three Teen Wolf Moon T-Shirt!

Since you are operating some kind of Internet connected device right now in order to read this, then I assume you are already familiar with the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt that became all the craze earlier this year. If you somehow escaped the craze, a quick refresher: it was a cheesy tee sold on Amazon that became absurdly popular because of »

Jason Bateman's Amazing Paul Wrap Gift

27 September 2009 6:50 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Jason Bateman recently wrapped shooting on Paul, the latest Simon Pegg comedy about two comic book nerds (Pegg and Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz compatriot Nick Frost) who meet an alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) while traveling cross country across the U.S. Bateman told Collider that before he left the Paul set to fly home, Pegg and company gave him the ultimate present. He and Nick and Joe Lo Truglio and Bill Hader and Kristen [Wiig] and the director, Greg Mottola, gave me the Japanese one-sheet from Teen Wolf 2. Which was pretty fantastic. And they all signed it with really clunky, semi-funny wolf puns like, "it's been a howl working with you" or crap like that. It's very, very funny and beautifully framed and very tasteful — which was sort of hilarious too. But the real joke was me trying to get it home. I don't know how you check something like that. »

Jason Bateman talks Hancock 2, Arrested Development, Reveals What He Got as Wrap Gift on Paul

22 September 2009 11:37 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Less than a month ago I spoke with Jason Bateman and managed to get updates on “Hancock 2″ and “Arrested Development”. At the time, nothing had been officially announced regarding a “Hancock” sequel, and Jason didn’t think the story had any substance. But in the past month, Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara have been hired to write the screenplay, and Variety reported “Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman are gearing up to reunite for the sequel to Columbia Pictures’ “Hancock,” with Peter Berg set to helm the action-comedy.”

But earlier today when I covered the “Couples Retreat” international press day for our partners at Omelete, Jason told me, “I don’t know where that writer gets their information from as I haven’t been contacted, nor have my representatives.”

Jennifer’s Body Review

18 September 2009 6:17 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Jennifer's Body Directed by: Karyn Kusama Written by: Diablo Cody Starring: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris When first-time screenwriter Diablo Cody won an Oscar a couple of years ago for the indie hit Juno, it immediately catapulted her to a level of fame that very few Hollywood writers ever reach. This attention also came with its fair share of backlash, as many people chose to look down on her very public previous career choice as a stripper, while others simply labeled Juno as overrated and too clever for its own good. Regardless, the movie had marked the arrival of a bold new voice in Hollywood, and one that wouldn't likely be going away anytime soon. After launching the successful Showtime series The United States of Tara (with the help of Steven Spielberg, no less), Cody went on to tackle her sophomore film, a horror-comedy hybrid called Jennifer's Body. »

'Teen Wolf Too' Star Jason Bateman Offers Advice For MTV's Next Generation Of Wolves

12 September 2009 9:48 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As children of the '80s, we can honestly say one of the more interesting projects out there is MTV's forthcoming reboot of "Teen Wolf," the cheeseball films perhaps best known for showcasing a hairy Michael J. Fox shooting hoops in werewolf garb. This time, though, MTV is planning to strip away most of the comedy, instead labeling the show as a dramatic thriller.

Whoever is cast in the reborn franchise may want to take note of our interview today with Jason Bateman, the "Up in the Air" star who walked the carpet at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival. See, before his recent run of blockbuster films and his now-legendary series "Arrested Development," Bateman was a young struggling actor who snagged the lead role in "Teen Wolf Too," the 1987 sequel to the original. So what did advice did Bateman have to offer the next generation? "Try to pitch the writers to be a fan of electrolysis, »

I first got a brain-load of Buffalo metallers Every Time I Die during the Sounds of the Underground tour a few years back, and they blew my circuits instantly with their raunchy, devil-may-care attitude, maniacal energy, and highly original songwriting. All those elements are front and center in their upcoming album New Junk Aesthetic, which hits stores next Tuesday – and if you've been paying attention, you've already had a taste of what's to come in the form of their acid-drenched new video for "Wanderlust," featuring nightmarish animated segments from their guitarist, Jordan Buckley. ‘Teen Wolf’ series for MTV is Coming Together

2 September 2009 8:09 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Michael J. Fox, better known for his days as Alex Keaton on 'Family Ties' and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, starred in a small film in 1985 called Teen Wolf, a film about a high school basketball player who turns into a werewolf during his “transition” through puberty. Nearly 25 years later, MTV has announced that a television series, based on the film, is in the works. Last January, the network announced the project as part of a development slate. After a script was written, MTV asked for a pilot to be produced. With popular shows as 'The Hills' and 'Laguna Beach' gaining most of the network's audiences, MTV's version of 'Teen Wolf' will be “very different from the original” says senior VP Liz Gateley. The series will be set in high school, draw more from the horror genre by exploring werewolf »

Teen Wolf Roars Back To Life

Michael J. Fox's cult 1980s movie Teen Wolf is to be brought back to life in a new TV series.

Fox starred as a high school student who discovers he is a werewolf in the 1985 picture.

And now bosses at MTV have decided to revamp the movie for the small screen.

Senior vice president of MTV series development, Liz Gateley, insists the show will be "very different" from the original film.

She says, "It has a fresh take. It has more of an American Werewolf in Paris feel to it. It's a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the centre who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques." »

MTV Planning Teen Wolf Pilot!

There's a remake coming of the Michael J. Fox comedy Teen Wolf, only it's not traditionally what you'd expect. The Hollywood Reporter says that MTV is readying a pilot of the hit 80's movie as a jumping point for a series.

The article says: The 1985 film starred Michael J. Fox as a teenager who discovers he is a werewolf. The MTV version will be set in high school, draw from the horror genre to explore werewolf mythology and include a romantic plot line.

"It has a fresh take and is very different from the original," said Liz Gateley, senior vp MTV series development. "It has more of an 'American Werewolf in London' feel to it. It's a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the center who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques."

From the Palantir! (A Fantasy News Round-Up)

Let's get my weekly rant about how Hollywood is producing nothing but remakes and sequels out of the way right away, shall we? MTV is moving ahead on a TV series remake of the 1980s movie Teen Wolf, Fox is "rebooting" the Fantastic Four franchise, and Columbia has three more Spider-Man movies in the works. And for the record, the troubled Broadway musical adaptation of Spider-Man is back on. (That's right: there's a Broadway musical version of Spider-Man!) Oh, and they're remaking Swamp Thing (in 3-D). »

Scoop This: The New Smurfs, Teen Wolf on TV and Deadman Rises

The first real promo image for the upcoming live-action/CGI Smurfs movie has arrived online in the form of a teaser poster that ran in some magazine. In it we get to check out the new Smurf look, which doesn't impress me all that much – they kinda look like a mid-90s video game character. That being said, folks still have plenty of time to impress us with more Smurf creations as the film doesn't even hit theaters until the holiday season of 2010. Check out a larger image of the teaser poster over on PVCBlue.   'Teen Wolf' Heads to TV   I would hope the constant re-runs on cable have produced a few more Teen Wolf fans out of this lot, some of whom may have been a bit too young to remember when the awesome Michael J. Fox flick hit theaters. After an unsuccessful sequel...

‘Teen Wolf’ Pilot Coming to MTV

1 September 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

With their Hills and Tila Tequilas, MTV has never really been considered a leading network when it comes to scripted TV shows. But they’re trying because back in January it was announced that the music network was putting together a reboot of the 1980s classic Teen Wolf for the small screen, and we’re even closer as the pilot is on it’s way.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series will be a direct remake of the 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox about a teenager who learns that he comes from a long line of werewolves.

“It has a fresh take and is very different from the original,” said Liz Gateley, senior vp MTV series development. “It has more of an ‘American Werewolf in London’ feel to it. It’s a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the center who provide a great comedy element: They are »

MTV Orders ‘Teen Wolf’ Series Pilot

1 September 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

MTV recently picked up a presentation pilot for a TV series based on Teen Wolf, the 1985 hit starring Michael J. Fox.  The network ordered it after reading a script by Jeff Davis (exec producer of “Criminal Minds”).

No doubt cashing in on the same crowd who reads their daily Twilight coverage, the MTV version will be set in a high school, explore werewolf mythology, and include a romantic plot line, according to THR.

“It has a fresh take and is very different from the original,” said Liz Gateley, senior VP MTV series development. “It has more of an American Werewolf in London feel to it.” Perfect, because there is nothing teen viewers love more than referencing material released before they were born, and nothing makes older fans happier than comparing a teen TV series to a classic film.

MTV’s Teen Wolf Remake is a TV Series?

1 September 2009 2:58 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

When MTV announced plans a couple months ago to remake/reboot the Michael J Fox film Teen Wolf, I assumed the intent was to create a feature film. That evidently isn't the case, as the network has ordered a pilot for a television series. What the hell does MTV plan to do with their high school lycanthropes? THR reports that execs liked the script that was cobbled together, and ordered the pilot. (Thanks, THR...we guessed as much.) This version will once again be a high school drama that has horror and werewolf lore, and there will be a romantic angle as well. The latter being a given if the network is going to draw out a series. Liz Gateley, MTV's senior VP of series development, tries out her comedy act while talking up the series: "It has a fresh take and is very different from the original. It has »
