Review: ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’

19 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Not many people say it, but Nicolas Cage gets a bad rap. Often, even from me. Sure, he’s made some questionable script choices in the past, and been known for a few colorful and even over-the-top performances, but if there’s one thing he is known for, it’s consistency in a role. That’s exactly what he brings to the table with Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

The film is an almost-modern-day reboot of the 1992 film starring Harvey Keitel. This time, rather than the rough streets of New York City, the setting has been changed to a post-Katrina New Orleans, with crime high and morals low, the only thing left to keep the streets safe is a deranged lieutenant on a path to his own personal hell.

There are certainly many problems with the film, which we’ll go into, but the most important positive thing …

First Look at 'Clash of the Titans' (Trailer)

11 November 2009 11:26 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Wrap Staff

New footage of Aussie up-and-comer Sam Worthington as the mythic Perseus in the remake of 1981's "Clash of the Titans." The original featured a strange hodgepodge of Shakespearean actors Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier and "L.A. Law"s Harry Hamlin in a toga. The special effects look way better this time. With "Clash" and a little movie called "Avatar," Hollywood is clearly hoping that they have the next big thing in Worthington.

Channel Surfing: Robert Patrick Targets "Chuck," Love "Pentagon" for "Glee," "Lost" Finds Former "L.A. Law" Star, and More

11 November 2009 7:23 AM, PST | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. Given that it's Veteran's Day, there are but a few headlines to get through this morning. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Robert Patrick (The Unit) has been cast in an upcoming episode of NBC's Chuck, where he will play Col. Keller, described as "a mysterious figure from Casey's past." He's slated to appear about halfway through the series' third season in a Casey-centric episode entitled "Chuck Versus the Tic Tac." (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files) TVGuide.com's Natalie Abrams talks to Glee star Chris Colfer about tonight's episode of Glee ("Wheels") and the romantic permutations coming up on the Fox musical dramedy series. "It's very incestual," Colfer told Abrams about the glee club's romantic entanglements. "There's love triangles right now, but there's soon to be love pentagons and hexagons. I get added on to the [Puck-Quinn-Finn-Rachel] quadrangle. We go full force: When Kurt …

Sheila Kelley Lands Key Role on Lost

10 November 2009 12:42 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

For its final season, Lost is bringing back a number of key characters.

But it's also introducing a handful of new ones. Who will William Atherton portray on the series, for example? We have no idea. But the actor will be featured on a number of episodes.

The same can now be said for Sheila Kelley, as Michael Ausiello confirms she's nabbed a recurring role on Lost.

The actress - who has appeared on episodes of ER and The Sopranos, but is best known for her three-year arc as Gwen Taylor on L.A. Law - will take on the character of Kendall.

Previous casting notices described her as an "intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out."

Any thoughts on how she might play into the larger Lost picture? When we hear "corporate espionage," it's hard …

Exclusive: 'Lost' retains 'L.A. Law' alum Sheila Kelley

10 November 2009 9:47 AM, PST | EW - Ausiello Files | See recent EW.com - The Ausiello Files news »

Actress-turned-erotic exercise pioneer Sheila Kelley has found a plum role on the final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively. Kelley — best known acting-wise for her three-year stint as secretary Gwen Taylor on L.A. Law — will play the recurring role of Kendall, an intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out. At least that's the info Team Sneakmeister Darlton circulated around town when they were casting the role. For all I know Kelley is replacing an Awol Mira Furlan as Rousseau. Corbin Bernsen Wants to Make a Zombie Baseball Movie

4 November 2009 2:15 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Corbin Bernsen wants to blend zombies and baseball. Sounds like a joke right? It's not.

Bernsen spoke to Fangoria a week ago at the Worcester, Ma's Rock and Shock convention, where his directorial effort Dead Air was screening, and spoke about the project as a very real possibility.

It's called Three Strikes, You're Dead. I come to these conventions and meet people, and there are two things they like: They enjoy horror, but they're also into the Major League movies I was in. And this is kind of a revenge thing—I heard they're doing Major League 4 and they aren't including my character, and I got kind of pissed off, so I thought, "I'm gonna get 'em back. I'm gonna do a zombie baseball movie."

It's set about 30 years in the future in Pittsburgh—a little tribute to George Romero and Night of the Living Dead. The undead have been …

Brothers & Sisters (4.02) "Breaking The News" Recap

5 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

"Closing the Distance" should've been the episode title.

We open to Kitty trying to get an appointment with her doctor, when Senator Pretty Boy barges in and says his opponent has his medical records from when they faked us out about his death. Kitty starts trying to reassure him so she can spill the beans about her medical issues, but chickens out. And we have a plot thread for the episode.

We zoom in on Kevin getting ready to go to work to deal with the whole heart attack thing, as Scotty prepares to …prepare breakfast. God, will they ever let this man do anything but cook for a Walker?

Scotty senses that a bloody steak isn’t the only carnage on Kevin’s mind and goes to talk him down from going all nuclear on Senator Pretty Boy's opponent. I don’t really want him to succeed because Kevin …

TV Review: NBC Delivers Medical Action With Excellent ‘Trauma’

28 September 2009 1:07 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The wave of new fall shows is coming to an end this week with so many shows having debuted to date that we’ve already had our first cancellation of the season (The CW’s horrible “The Beautiful Life). But NBC has saved one of the best for last in “Trauma,” an expertly produced and acted series that stands as the most promising of the three new medical series this season and arguably the show with the most long-term potential, period.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0 Character-driven, ensemble dramas like “Trauma” have been the backbone of television for a very long time. From “Hill Street Blues” to “ER,” viewers like to watch people who go above and beyond but also have everyday problems and insecurities like you and me. We need to see ourselves in these superhuman characters. It is their willingness to do what most people won’t that makes them …

Joss Whedon: Master of cult TV

For the second class in our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Adam B. Vary offers this overview of the TV career of Joss Whedon, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse. Also, check out this photo gallery of our favorite shows by four legendary showrunners. What Stephen Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue), Norman Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons), and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) were in the 20th century television, Joss Whedon has become today: Nothing less than a television brand. His name alongside the "Created by" credit during the opening titles guarantees you are about to watch a show that swings for the fences; a show as keenly attuned to its female characters as its male ones; a show that tackles Big Ideas and Big Themes without skimping on Great Entertainment; a show that is unafraid to Go There, from allowing the …

Today We’re Totally Crushing On: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

6 August 2009 4:57 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The last time we were “Crushing On” someone, it was Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) from the Harry Potter films. The “Crushing On” series focuses on one relatively unknown or underappreciated actor/actress that may not be popular with mainstream audiences (yet) but that we feel should get some exposure for their work. Today we continue our new semi-regular series “Crushing On” with a name that most people have heard but few people know anything about: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

It’s really a shame that mainstream audiences haven’t had a chance to fully appreciate Jgl’s work. He has quite an extensive background in acting and is only 28 years old, but has been acting since he was 7 with his first TV debut, Stranger on My Land. For the next four years he played various roles in a gambit of TV shows: Family Ties, Murder She Wrote, China Beach, Quantum Leap and L.A. Law. …

[DVD Review] Fracture

6 July 2009 11:34 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When Grisham was king of the novel-to-movie adaptation, a title stolen briefly from the hands of Stephen King, law dramas would hit theaters every year and would consistently entertain. As the Hollywood system is wont to do, the introduction of Grisham-films to the theatrical sphere spurred a mass exodus of other legal dramas from the page to the screen. But then there was a lull. It seemed for quite a while that stories about court cases were best shown on television – or maybe it was that audiences were inundated with Law & Order spin-offs to the point that no one wanted to pay to see them in theaters – who knows. The point is, when Fracture rolled around in 2007 it actually seemed fresh. Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.

But the heart is fickle; or rather, the heart isn’t so easily fooled by the peak-a-boo antics of a film genre. …

Lisa Rinna Tells the Truth about Her Lips

Say this for Lisa Rinna: She has loose lips as far as her thick lips are concerned. "That's the pink elephant in the room," the actress, 45, said on Monday's Today show. Comedy Blu-Ray Round Up, May 12, 2009: ‘Major League,’ ‘Wayne's World,’ ‘Black Sheep’

12 May 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Paramount Home Video is unleashing waves of catalog titles this month, starting with an interesting quintet of laugh-fests that range wildly in subject matter and quality.

What do they have in common? Well, three are from the “Saturday Night Live” factory - “Wayne’s World,” “Wayne’s World 2,” and “Black Sheep,” but the other two are not. Those three are also from the ’90s, another tempting way to bunch these random titles together, but “Major League” is an ’80s comedy and “Without a Paddle” is from the ’00s.

Even quality levels seem like an inappropriate way to lump these titles together as even diehard fans couldn’t claim that Chris Farley’s “Black Sheep” or the silly “Paddle” should stand next to “Wayne’s World” or the beloved “Major League”.

Why even try and lump them together? They’re all comedies. They’re all Paramount. Anyone can find at …

Bernsen Sued Over Storage

Former L.A. Law star Corbin Bernsen is facing legal action from the owners of a storage company who allege the actor owes $66,600 (£45,931) in unpaid rent.

The bosses of an unnamed depot in Van Nuys, California have filed papers at Los Angeles Superior Court accusing the star of failing to pay fees for a unit rented between 2004 and January 2009.

The documents also allege Bernsen has failed to pay a portion of rent on a second unit which he hired in 1999 and vacated in February, bringing the total to $66,600 (£45,931).

The suit is seeking reimbursement of the allegedly unpaid rent plus interest and late charges on both units.

Representatives for Bernsen have acknowledged the long-running dispute with the company, but claim bosses haven't upheld certain aspects of the lease agreement, according to TMZ.com. …
