With this series Edward Hardwicke took over the role of Dr. Watson in the various Jeremy Brett "Sherlock Holmes" TV series and films following the departure of David Burke, who played the Watson role in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984).

Edward Hardwicke originally wore "lifts" so as to be closer in height to Jeremy Brett. Unfortunately Hardwicke found it very difficult to walk wearing them, so they were disposed of.

Edward Hardwicke who played Dr. John Watson was the son of the acclaimed British actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke. In the 1950s US TV series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" the part of Holmes was played by Ronald Howard, the son of another famous British actor, Leslie Howard.
