[Editor's Note: Last week we published David Chen's and Brendon Connelly's reviews of Avatar. Here is a different take on the film from Russ Fischer.]
James Cameron sure can build a world. His obsessive, detail-oriented approach to filmmaking is particularly suited to inventing alternate environments; in another life he might have been a magnificent city planner. Pandora, the world on which his film Avatar takes place, is rich in strange and beautiful detail. It's a pulp wonderland, the sort of world that would make Robert E. Howard nod in approval. The science fiction of his teen years, the building blocks of early films like Aliens and the hidden sights discovered in his mid-life underwater career are recombined into an environment that becomes more than the sum of its parts.
When Pandora is allowed to take center stage it makes a hell of a subject. Cameron is fully engaged while exploring the planet's

Leave behind the hype about “revolutionizing cinema”. Ignore the half-billion dollar price tag. Forget the numerous years James Cameron waited to make sure technology could match his imagination. To include these external factors in an evaluation of Avatar would make the film a colossal disappointment. However, judged solely on its own merits, Avatar is a fine film but one that can feel limited at times. Hampered by the disregard for advancements in computer animation, a lack of understanding the freedom digital 3D filmmaking provides, and a story both outdated and demeaning, Avatar still manages to come out ahead with strong performances (especially from Stephen Lang), excellent pacing, and Cameron’s unrivaled ability to capture action on a grand scale.
In the year 2154, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a marine paralyzed from the waist down, awakens from cryo-sleep to learn that his science-genius twin brother is dead and that Rda, the company he worked for,

Is Avatar the film that will finally sink James Cameron? All signs point that way – but don't forget, this is the man who salvaged Titanic
Everyone thinks James Cameron is going down this time, as in Down, Down … Deep Down. Cameron included. So he has been laying off bets on himself: if the wondrous special effects prove less than wonderful, he says, then he wants Avatar, his new film, to be noted for its spiritual qualities. So the budget is estimated at $230m and the demented film world smiles in the glare of such numbers and contemplates Cameron's fall. (By the way, a film about Jim's demise would make its money back in southern California alone.)
His ruin has always been there for the begging. When he roared out on Oscar night, 1998, "I'm king of the world," as he clutched the Titanic Oscars, he was alluding to the way that in every film,

The freshly announced Screen Actor's Guild Award nominations include plenty of the usual suspects you were expecting to see mentioned. "Up in the Air," "Inglourious Basterds," "The Hurt Locker," "Invictus" and more are all nominated for acting achievements, reflecting a vast chunk of the major nominees at this year's Golden Globes.
What isn't on the list, however, is "Avatar." Despite getting some surprising nominations at the Globes, including a nod for Best Drama of the Year, James Cameron's return to feature filmmaking did not receive a single shred of credit from the SAG's corner of Hollywood.
But let's get serious for a moment... does it really matter?
If you're going into "Avatar" expecting Oscar-winning performances, you're barking up the wrong tree. While I have yet to see the film myself -– I'll be correcting that in short order, of course -– I can still say without a doubt that

I firmly believe that one cannot judge a movie on first viewing. I like to review a movie after watching it a second time, after a week of my first viewing, preferably a month later. So may be I should not write this review an hour after seeing Avatar. A second viewing shows me things that I might have missed the first time. I like to form my opinion after several days, but but But... the initial opinion never changes.
I can watch a movie any number of times, but the first impression is, my dear movie aficionados, Always the best impression. So here it is, the first impression. You know the feeling when watching a really great movie, that awesome realisation that you are watching a masterpiece, the fuzzy feeling in your heart that you will be waching this movie again and again with your kids and grandkids?

Disney proved that 2D animation can still draw kids and their parents in with The Princess and the Frog doing respectable dollars in its first week of wide release. Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort Invictus did more modestly, not having what it takes to beat out The Blind Side in its fourth week. Here's the top five:
1. The Princess and the Frog: $25 million
2. The Blind Side: $15.5 million
3. Invictus: $9 million
4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon: $8 million
5. A Christmas Carol: $6.8 million

When Rebecca Keegan interviewed me for her terrific Cameron book The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron, I made a point of what a feminist he is. From Sigourney Weaver in Aliens to Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2, Cameron paved the way for such gun-toting action stars as Angelina Jolie. Cameron respects strong women: after all, he’s been married to Hamilton, Gale Anne Hurd and Kathryn Bigelow—who will likely be competing with him for the best director Oscar.

James Cameron, don’t leave us for this long again.
What’s encompassed in the 161 minutes that the King of the World has crafted shows us a seasoned veteran who knew what he had all along. The feeling called back to something I felt at the 1996 Olympics when I witnessed Michael Jordan and the Dream Team make their way to another gold medal. Jordan effortlessly handled the ball unlike anyone who had played the game before him and ever will, no matter how many Kobe’s or LeBron’s come our way. I couldn’t help but be breathless as I witnessed a legend show why he was a true master of the art.
Simply put; Cameron has done things in Avatar I have never seen before in a film.
Never before have I used that phrase to describe any movie these eyes have ever seen, and maybe it’s

James Cameron gives verdict on McG's Terminator Salvation

Avatar director James Cameron was also the man behind the first two Terminator films, in 1984 and 1991, which are regarded by many fans as the strongest in the series.
Cameron directed and co-wrote both releases, which were followed by Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003 and then this year by McG's power-packed, post-apocalyptic Terminator Salvation.
In the Total Film supplement King of the World: The Complete Works of James Cameron, there is an interview in which Cameron was asked what he thought of Terminator Salvation.
He responded: "It didn't quite have the emotional power that it should have had. I thought Sam Worthington was great, very powerful, and Christian Bale...people have criticised him for being one-note but that's part of the character.
"He was playing a guy who's furiously dedicated to the survival of the human species. Maybe more could have been done with that.

Little Girl Blue: Zoe Saldana as Neytiri in James Cameron's Avatar
This is how “meet cute” happens in James Cameron’s Avatar: At night in a jungle on the alien moon Pandora, Jake Sully, a cocky Marine played by Sam Worthington, stumbles into a pack of snapping, six-legged predators called viperwolves. This jarhead is about to become a viperpuppy chew toy when a lithe huntress named Neytiri (Star Trek’s Zoe Salanda) intervenes. Luckily for Jake, Neytiri is handy with a bow and arrow. She’s also smart, bilingual, spiritual, great with animals, and—for a 10-foot-tall cyan-colored woman with a tail—a babe.
Cameron has stuffed Avatar with enough futuristic battle scenes and fantastical creatures to rally hordes of 14-year-old boys to the box office when the film opens Dec. 18. But, as always in a Cameron film, the most interesting roles in Avatar belong to the women.
