Fora.tv recently posted an interview with David Lynch at the Hudson Union Society. The 63-year-old creator of Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks took time to talk a little about his experience meeting George Lucas, who offered him the chance to direct Return of the Jedi.
Lynch amused the audience by saying he had "next-door to zero interest" in the project, but he thought he should at least meet with Lucas. He then described the elaborate process of simply getting to Lucas.
It was incredible. I had to go to this building in La first and get a special credit card, and I had to get special keys; a letter came, and a map.
Finally, after taking a flight and driving a rental car to some building, he met with Lucas in an office.
Now, right about in this time, I started getting a little bit of a headache. …

Who turns down an offer to direct a Star Wars movie straight from George Lucas himself? David Lynch does. The man responsible for films like The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Eraserhead not only decided to take a pass on directing Return of the Jedi, he adamantly refused. Lynch tells of when Lucas approached him with the offer, which Lynch had .next door to zero interest. in doing. Still, Lynch met with Lucas. Meeting with Lucas isn.t as simple as picking up the phone and choosing a place to chat. He had to go to a building where he was given a special credit card, key and map. He was flown to the location after which Lynch admits he started to develop a headache. Then, Lucas introduced Lynch to the Wookiees and Lynch jokes, .Now, this headache is getting, you know, getting stronger.. When Lynch declined Lucas …

For the coffee drinking, cherry pie eating, chicken dancing fans of David Lynch everywhere, the announcement of his return to film making should be a glorious one. Yet, as always with the eccentric maestro, there is something of a catch.
The last decade has been a quiet one in the way of film work for David Lynch. Not that he hasn’t kept busy – aside from maintaining his web-site, working on shorts such as Rabbits and the animated Dumbland, adverts for Gucci, music videos for Moby, an exhibition in Paris and a transcendental book called “Catching The Big Fish”, Lynch has kept his fans updated with weather reports and his embracing of Twitter micro-blogging. But, in the way of films, the big-haired auteur’s output has been scant. After re-tooling Mullholland Drive from what was to be a pilot episode for a TV series, the creator of Twin Peaks has …

Celebrating the birthdays of the filmic and famous. Because, why not? If it's your big day, holla at us in the comments.
Gig and Matthew
Today's Birthdays 11/04
1868 La Belle Otero Spanish actress, courtesan to royalty, La Folies Bergere dancer and star of a scandalous silent short performing the "Valse Brilliante". Where's her biopic? In order to inject life into that zombie-like genre (no brains, only forward motion) I really think filmmakers need to look at more obscure but still fascinating figures, further back in time. If they stop trying to win Oscars and just try to tell interesting stories, I bet they'll still win the Oscars. Try harder, Hollywood.
1913 Gig Young won the supporting actor Oscar for They Shoot Horses Don't They?, a totally brilliant and Oscar historical film. Emcee roles are sometimes gold for awards contention, right?
1918 Art Carney of Harry and Tonto Oscar-winning fame
1946 Frederick Elmes, wonderfully expressive …

Halloween is a time quite custom designed for tricks, treats and terror. In the world of cinema, there is no film as notoriously terrifying as William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. As a special treat to Orange Film Club members, the tree-lined depths of Tower Hamlets Cemetery came alive tonight with clergy, fog, spirits and curious lights – all leading the way to a cinema screen in a clearing. The eyes and ears of HeyUGuys were there in the dark, peering down the spooky paths, heart jumping in our dry throat waiting for something to go bump in the night. And what a night it was!
Before the screening we spoke with Empire Magazine’s horror expert, Mr Kim Newman*, who echoed our awe over the astonishing location. Kim had no hesitation in accepting Orange’s invite to come along and introduce the audience to their evening’s entertainment:
“I had many …

This is some very upsetting news.
It appears that actor Dennis Hopper has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, there were some reports that Hopper had been rushed to the hospital for an undisclosed reason. Now, according to the BBC, Hopper is entering a special program for treatment in California. The initial stay in the hospital was reportedly due to flu-like symptoms and dehydration.
Hopper has had a long and varied history in cinema, ranging back to his friendship in his youth with actor James Dean. He went from playing bit parts to writing, directing, and starring in Easy Rider, which many regard as one of the formative films of 1960s and 1970s cinema. Since then, he has played many memorable roles in over 200 productions, ranging from villains in Speed and Waterworld to a psychotic photographer in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. …

The revelation that Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper has prostate cancer is a hard pill to swallow. A man of magnanimous presence on screen, and star of films such Easy Rider, Mad Dog Morgan, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and Speed, he has undoubtedly made his name as a tough guy not to be messed with. However, he must now focus all his strength and attention on recovery, which, as a result, puts his artistic endeavours on the backburner. First on the list is the cancellation of Hopper's imminent plans to arrive in Melbourne. The subject of an exclusive Australian exhibition due to open Thursday 12 November at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi), Hopper had arranged to fly in next week to oversee the installation, and take part in the official opening program. …

This easy rider has a tough ride ahead. Dennis Hopper is battling prostate cancer, according to the actor's manager, and will be canceling all upcoming travel plans to focus on treatment. "We're hoping for the best," manager Sam Maydew said, adding that Hopper is in treatment under a special program at the University of Southern California. The 73-year-old star of the cult classic Blue Velvet was hospitalized on Sept. 30 with flulike symptoms and stomach trouble, but was out a day later and said to be feeling "much better." Hopper recently finished shooting the second season of the Starz drama Crash, based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film, but was not able to make an …

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. The Stepfather (1987) Directed by Joseph Reuben Despite collecting positive reviews, director Joseph Ruben's The Stepfather was a box office flop, lost among the flood of slasher films saturating the market at the time. Still, the film managed to garner a small cult following, which has increased since its home video release. The Stepfather works for one reason: it's an exercise in despair framed as the portrait of a tragic man. Meet Jerry Blake, brilliantly portrayed by Lost's Terry O'Quinn. Jerry's the new guy in town, and has all the makings of a perfect friend, perfect neighbor, perfect boyfriend and even a perfect husband. But looks can be deceiving, as Jerry is really a homicidal maniac. He moves from town to town, marrying into a family and then wiping it out when it inevitably fails to live up to his Leave it to Beaver ideal. O'Quinn is well cast …

Laura Dern is the latest addition to the cast of Little Fockers, the working title for the Meet The Parents sequel. The film, to be directed by Paul Weitz, reunites much of the cast from the previous two installments including Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson. Jessica Alba is another recent addition to the cast of the Jane Rosenthal and Jay Roach-produced pic.
The actress, who rose to prominence for her part in David Lynch's twisted, voyeuristic melodrama, Blue Velvet, is set to play the headmistress of the elementary school where the Fockers' children attend.
Dern won a golden globe earlier this year for her performance in HBO's political drama, Recount. She recently signed a deal with the cable network to star in a pilot yet to be penned, which will be produced and directed by the School Of Rock scribe, Mike White. …

Few movie directors are as forthcoming on the screen and as reticent in the press as David Lynch. He tends to keep his cards close to the vest in order to preserve the mysterious quality of such fever-dream pictures as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Dr. As he frequently says in so many words, Lynch refuses to filter his more outré fantasies before they reach the screen, or to over-intellectualize them after; before his movie career began, he rejected psychoanalysis following a single session in which the doctor told him that talking everything out might dull his creativity. Depending on …

Winner of the Atlanta Horror Fest's Buried Alive award last weekend, The Hagstone Demon showcases Mark Borchadt of American Movie infamy in a sometimes hilarious, always interesting low budget smashup mix of seminal favorites including Blue Velvet and Rosemary's Baby. Part noir, part horror, The Hagstone Demon had its audience laughing out loud at scenes both intentionally and unintentionally funny. With another dialogue pass or three on the screenplay and some more judicious editing, this film could have been a breakout hit.
When Douglas Elmore (Mark Borchadt) takes over the job of caretaking an old spooky apartment building about to be torn down, he thinks it will be an easy gig that will keep him close to the memory of his tragically dead ex-wife. Instead he finds a mounting bodycount of tenants, a weirdly …

A week after the release of SyFy’s Riverworld trailer, we get to take a look at another SyFy original miniseries event; an adaptation of the Lee Falk comic, The Phantom.
The film, based on the comic, tells the story of Kit Walker, the 21st Phantom, played by Ryan Carnes (General Hospital, Desperate Housewives), with Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet, Alias) as the villain, Lithia. Cameron Goodman (Wild ‘N Out) will star as Walker’s love interest, Renny and Sandrine Holt (The L World) as the Phantom’s trusted friend and advisor, Guran.
Fans of the series hoping to get a glimpse of Phantom villian, Rama Singh, will be out of luck as they’ve “reimagined” the Singh Brotherhood leader as Rhatib Singh. No information has been released on whether Rhatib is representing the character Rama for the film or if he’s a relative.
Producers, Rhi Entertainment, have provided the …

Below you'll find the Doctor's exclusive interview with Deadbolt.
With the acclaim currently being gained by many acts in the Northwest, my little batch of patchouli-stinking heaven is starting to become the first (maybe second) stop for many Goth, Industrial, and Psychobilly acts starting the West Coast leg of their tours. And for these bands, there's no better place to do that than in Diablo’s Downtown Lounge, a creepy little dive affectionately referred to by locals as “The Satan Room.” Diablo’s works diligently to attract the best acts as they make their way through Oregon.

Hopper will take a few more days to recoup and has canceled a bunch of promotional appearances on behalf of his Starz TV series Crash, which is loosely based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film.
