| Peter W. Simeon <simeon@imdb.com> (2 July 1999) This is a very sharp MUSE laserdisc. The resolution is most of the time top notch and the colors are very intense and also quite accurate. Some scenes, especially the darker flying sequences at the beginning of the movie, are bit grainy, but otherwise there is not much noise present. Maybe the print which was used was grainy to begin with. It has some dirt and speckles from time to time. There are not too many problems with MUSE compression, but sometimes a bit of smearing can be noticed. Unfortunately the aspect ratio is wrong. Panasonic transferred "Top Gun" at 1.78 : 1 instead of 2.35 : 1. Most of the time, the framing is not too bad, though. After all this was a Super 35 film, so there was more vertical information they could use. But it is still a bit annoying not to have the framing the filmmakers had intended. The 3-1 stereo soundtrack is very good, but the surrounds are not as impressive as in the newer Dolby Digital 5.1 remixes. The songs are very powerful and the dialogue is great, too. |
