Sagal Was One Of Gene Simmons' Conquests

2 December 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former Married... With Children star Katey Sagal has revealed she is one of the thousands of women Kiss star Gene Simmons claims to have bedded.

The TV star admits she was a struggling young actress, working in a diner, when she fell for the rocker.

Sagal recalls, "I was 18 years old, I was a waitress at this restaurant and Kiss came in after one of their concerts - it was when they just started, so I went over and I waited on them... and Gene Simmons thought I was kinda cute, so we ended up kinda going out."

And she quickly realised that dating Simmons was a huge career boost for a budding star, who had dreams of becoming a singer: "I took him to my band practice... and he took me to Casablanca Records and he got me a record deal. Pretty good date, right? He sort of got me my first big professional break." …

‘White Gorilla’ Moves in on Atom, Pees In Sink

30 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

While sharp writing and clever story structure are often the hallmarks of good comedy, one can’t overlook the impact of a fantastic comic performance. Is Caddyshack remembered for its plot? No, it’s become beloved because of the standout comic acting of Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight. Same goes for The Honeymooners or Married With Children, both standard family scenarios elevated by standout performances from Jackie Gleason and Ed O’Neill, respectively. Not to elevate it to the same status as these classics, but this is what I thought of when watching Atom's new White Gorilla series. White Gorilla is an original web series executive produced by comedy vet Jim Biederman (The Whitest Kids U Know, Michael & Michael Have Issues) and Chris Gillen . It all begins when normal average everyman Steve (Trevor Dellecave) receives a mysterious wooden crate from Africa that contains a talking White …

Bsb: In Praise of Fright Night

8 November 2009 10:40 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

When you scrape away the death obsessed subtext and technicalities of the process, watching and loving horror films should be just plain fun, exhilarating fun, a complete escape into another parallel world that echoes our own. If it's not, if you find yourself labouring to find that simple joyous eye of the proverbial needle, well then, perhaps you should just give up the pursuit of terror geekdome altogether.

For me, speaking as someone who was literally born into a world where the people that done made me loved dark movies and weird entertainments and fully endorsed my obsessions with my growing "id", horror films will forever be tied to the sweetest moments of my youth. From those secret late night, school night, TV movie binges to sneaking into R rated films after buying PG tickets, horror was my first rebellion against the mainstream so embraced by my peers and the …

'Family' star Vergara: 'My accent is real'

Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara has said that her accent is real. The Colombian-born 37-year-old plays former Married With Children star Ed O'Neill's second wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC comedy. She told People that fans are often surprised by the fact that she is not faking her enunciation when they meet her in person. "I go out to a mall or restaurant and when somebody hears me they'll go, 'Oh my God, it's your real accent'," (more) …

She brings laughs each week on ABC's new sitcom Modern Family - but Sofia Vergara never intended to be a comic actress. She actually went to dental school. Calling from Los Angeles, Vergara, 37, opened up about how she got acquainted with her onscreen husband Ed O'Neill, her near career as a dentist and her own real life family. Here are five fun facts about the Modern Family scene stealer: 1. That accent is real! Sure, it may seem specific to her character Gloria's outsized personality but Vergara says her accent is the real deal. "I go out to a mall or …

Katey Sagal Speaks on Sons of Anarchy Rape, Singing Scenes

30 October 2009 6:26 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Katey Sagal has come a long way since Married... with Children.

The actress has become a dramatic stalwart, appearing in various episodes of Lost (as Locke's troubled ex, Helen) and as the matriarch of Samcro on Sons of Anarchy.

While the star doesn't reveal any major spoilers in a new interview, she does open up about her character's loyalty, singing voice, and of course, this season's traumatic rape scene.

A few excerpts from the interview:

On allegiances to Jax and Clay: Her allegiance is to everybody.  I mean, what she’s desperately fighting for, in my opinion, is to protect the whole system.  This is her life, the whole thing... I would imagine if she really had to choose... I would say her son.

On personal repercussions from the rape scene: It hung around for most of the season with Gemma, but the really super dark, emotional visits I had to take, …

Ed O'Neill shines on Modern Family

25 October 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

One of the true breakout hits of this fall season is ABC's sitcom Modern Family. The critics have been singing the praises of this show, and the ratings have been good enough that I will predict without equivocation, that Modern Family will see a second season. And Ed O'Neill deserves a lot of the credit.

I like Modern Family. I don't love, love, love it, but I like it. The guys that were together on Frasier, Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, have given us something good here. It's not Frasier level yet, but it might get there with time.

If there's one part of Modern Family that has won me over completely, it's Ed O'Neill. You might think, well, sure, it's Ed O'Neill. But I have never liked Ed. I was never a fan of Married With Children. I loathed it. And don't tell me I'm a moron for saying …

A Review of The Cleveland Show: Hancock's Previous Episodes

19 October 2009 2:11 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Traditionally, television comedy chronicles the woes of being a shlubby, mediocre American male, who is really a well meaning teddy bear underneath, but it is also a defense of obnoxious people. Perhaps this is a reflection of the shows creators or their understanding of the real America. Regardless of what propels the writers to recycle this dynamic, their (and the actors) task is to encourage viewers to empathize with these curmudgeons, make these prickly pears appear lovable, or, at least, watchable, as determined by TV studio executives. The list of sitcoms featuring black or white cantankerous males is endless, be it: The Honeymooners, All in The Family, Sanford & Son, Fawlty Towers, The Jeffersons, Mr. Belvedere, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Frasier, The Simpsons, Mad About You, Married with Children, Scrubs, South Park, Family Guy, Entourage, My Name is Earl, House of Payne, Bored to Death, and The Office. …

DVD Playhouse—October 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories …

"Married... with Children" Then and Now

14 October 2009 6:29 PM, PDT | Getback - TV | See recent Getback - TV news »

On April 5, 1987, the Fox network debuted its first prime-time series, an irreverent sitcom about a highly dysfunctional family called "Married... with Children" (followed by "The Tracey Ullman Show"). The series ran for 11 seasons and was a turning point in the careers of actors Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, and Christina Applegate. Plus, it would forever change the way we heard the Frank Sinatra-crooned theme song, "Love and Marriage."

This week, the final season of the series was released on DVD. In the words of Al Bundy, "Let's rock," while we take a walk down memory lane with the stars of "Married... with Children," then and now. …

Natural Born Killers (Unrated Director's Cut) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition (read that here) and highly recommend it as I think this movie was certainly relevant when it was originally released, but in the time between sort of fell into obscurity. But now, 15 years later, it seems it is more relevant than ever, but I can't help but wonder if j_kad's comment on my review holds some water... Has the attention span of people changed so much that they can't figure out this movie? Drag Me To Hell Solid thrills and lots of laughs, Sam Raimi's return to horror is a success and in my opinion his best yet. Then again, I am not a fan of his Evil Dead films so take that for what you consider it to be worth. Sara just wrote up …

The New ABC TV Pickups

9 October 2009 2:37 AM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Disney-owned ABC TV has handed full-season pickups to the single-camera half-hour situation comedies Modern Family, Cougar Town and The Middle. The 'mockumentary' Modern Family debuting September 23, 2009 was created by Christopher Lloyd/Steven Levitan, produced by Fox Television Studios. Premise follows the families of 'Jay Pritchett' (Ed "Married With Children" O'Neill), his daughter 'Claire Dunphy' (Julie Bowen) and his son 'Mitchell Pritchett' (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Claire is a homemaker mom in a traditional family, Jay is married to a younger woman, raising a pre-teen stepson, while gay Mitchell and his partner adopt an Asian baby. Cougar Town, also premiering September 23, focuses on a recently divorced woman (Courteney Cox), re-entering the 'dating scene', to embark on a journey to self-discovery surrounded by fellow divorcees. Created by Bill Lawrence/Kevin Biegel, produced by Coquette Productions, in association with ABC Studios, broadcast of the pilot episode garnered 11.28 million viewers. The Middle premiered September 30, starring …

Rip Dick Durock

25 September 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Without a doubt the hardest part of our job reporting on the latest horror news is when one of our own is taken from us. We're very sad to inform you that Dick Durock, best known for his role as the "Swamp Thing", passed away last week at his home in Oak Park, California, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Durock, 72, was the subject of a fond tribute from Erin Blasko of the South Bend Tribune. Excerpts follow:

Born in South Bend in the late 1930s, Richard "Dick" Durock survived an early family tragedy to become a minor Hollywood player and fanboy idol for his role as Swamp Thing in the two feature films and television series of the same name.

Despite his success, he remained a humble Midwesterner at heart.

"He didn't get a big head. He was down-to-earth, very natural," Frank Varrichione, Durock's brother-in-law, said.

Chris O'Donnell and Michael Fasbender in the Irish side of upcoming TV and DVDs (IrishCentral)

25 September 2009 2:45 AM, PDT | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

On the Irish DVD front, look for the acclaimed indy horror flick “I Sell the Dead.” Written and directed by Dubliner Glenn McQuaid and starring Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, the film played in art houses over the summer and earned impressive reviews. On the Hollywood DVD front, Irish actor Michael Fassbender was among the stars of Quentin Tarantino’s kill-Nazis film “Inglourious Basterds.” (“Centurion” and “Jonah Hex” are two of Fassbender’s upcoming projects.) British actor Steve Coogan (whose parents were Irish immigrants) has been in films such as “Tropic Thunder” and the “Night at the Museum” films. But he became famous for his work on the BBC, which has just released a 14-disc set of Coogan sketches, including his famous creations “Alan Partridge” and “Tony Ferrino.” Finally, the new TV season will see the return of Irish-American small-screen veterans Ed O’Neill and Chris O’Donnell. Ed O'Neill and the Bon Jovi wig

24 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The Bon Jovi Wig is back! This has been a week of TV memories for me. First, I enjoyed Andre Braugher's psychiatrist on House, and last night, Ed O'Neill made a welcome return to the sitcom world. O'Neill hasn't been gone completely, of course. He has bounced around a bit, most recently appearing as a regular on John from Cincinnati. But he hasn't had a character as fun as Jay from Modern Family since his days as Al Bundy on Married... with Children.

I've always liked O'Neill (even watched a bit of Popeye Doyle, but not too much - no one is that big a fan). As a kid, I watched Married... with Children every week with my family. We were never quite touchy-feely enough for the standard sitcom family. And there was a small running gag in Modern Family that brought back memories of another gag from Married... with Children. …

This off-beat half-hour single-camera comedy looks at the extended family of patriarch Jay, played by Married With Children’s Ed O’Neill. Much of the humor is supplied by Jay’s uptight son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Mitchell’s flamboyant partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) with their “sports-guy chest bump” and prepared speech anyone who would judge their adoption of a young Vietnamese girl. But there are enough laughs to go around. …

TV Review: Talented Ensemble Drives ABC’s ‘Modern Family’

23 September 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The highlight of tonight’s debuting shows on ABC is one of the most promising new comedy pilots of the season, the multi-layered “Modern Family,” a sitcom that both skewers the conventions of the typical TV family show and lovingly embraces them at the same time.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0 The word “family” has changed a lot since “Leave It To Beaver” and it’s about time that a clever comedy takes a look at the modern composition and complexity of the new look to the family tree in 2009. With a dozen speaking roles, “Modern Family” can sometimes feel a bit too cluttered for a 22-minute show, but it’s hard to get too down on a sitcom for being too ambitious and once the show stops defining its characters and lets them grow, this could be one of the best comedies on the air.
