They find a Promelian battle-cruiser still floats in an asteroid field, so Picard, Data and Lieutenant Worf beam inside, finding a message from the captain he alone takes blame for all casualties. Barely back on board, they learn the Enterprise is immobilized by an energy-draining radiation field, the very booby trap that killed the Promelian ship's crew, which will within hours destroy the deflector shields, after which casualties will be massive. While running urgent simulations of the Enterprise's engine abilities on the holodeck, Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge, who recently saw his meticulously prepared dream-date fall trough, finds himself unusually taken with a holographic simulacrum of the late Dr. Leah Brahms, the Enterprise's engine designer. Data restores other bits from the wreck's captain's recordings, enough to guess how the energy-drain works, but the possible counter-move holds big risks, indeed makes it worse- is timing the key, as rapid as only a computer-simulated entity manages?

22 September 1990
Commander Riker had no choice as acting captain but fire full force on the Borg starship, despite Picard being on board of it, altered to a Borg calling himself Locutus, both ships are damaged. Emergency repairs shouldn't take too long to make the appointment with Admiral J. P. Hanson, who announces Klingons coming to the rescue, but Picard seems lost forever: Riker is granted full command. Technology is adapted to render it unpredictable, such as randomized phaser settings. Hanson's communications are cut, the war must be going badly. To avoid musical chairs, Borg expert Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Paula Shelby is acting XO. Locutus refuses to come to terms, separation and fire are engaged, including anti-matter spread. Data and Dorn beam into the Borg ship, overpower and get Locutus into a shuttle and beam aboard before it's shot down. If Crusher can awake Picard, he may now have decisive Borg info, but meanwhile declares himself Borg spokesman. While earth's own solar system is being invaded, Data finds out Borg mind coordination happens over frequencies; Crusher and Data try to access both man and machine, using a neuro-link to Data, still links aren't severed despite Picard reaching out, which teaches them the Borg cannot disconnect a member, Data hopes to reverse control...

Commander William Riker has been on an acculturation mission under an alias for months on the Arkonian planet, surgically altered to appear like a local, but he gets badly wounded, beyond their medical skills because his internal organs are unknown to them. Captain Jean-Luc Picard decides to speed up his official diplomatic approach, formally the First Contact, and intercede on Riker's behalf, but they are told by a fascinated open-minded Atkonian scientist that her planet's culture is particularly xenophobic so they reject any alien being as being unequal to them. The Arkonian government keeps the matter secret but is internally divided: while the chancellor Durken is in favor of Riker's release without the people finding out and establishing friendly relations with the Federation, his powerful security minister Krola is prepared to go to any length to preserve their traditional way of life, so he finds Riker and fakes his own murder....

Season 4, Episode 16: Galaxy's Child

9 March 1991
While the Enterprise is in a star-base, Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge gets a very special visitor, brilliant engineering designer Dr. Leah Brahms, who he feels to know almost intimately as a 'hologram version' of herself with 'whom' he bonded. However the real Brahms proves icy and arrogantly unwilling to consider any of Gordi's empirical findings could conceivably stand against her theoretically impermeable truth. They take on the challenge to collaborate and learn to know each-other better, but when Gordi shows her his hologram version of her, Brahms feels almost pornographically 'abused', one prejudiced insult too many for him. Meanwhile Picard, his bridge officers and Dr. Crusher have a very different problem, a strange life form which approaches, but dies, however is found to have 'given birth' to a baby version inside its corps, which must be separated to stand a chance of survival and contact with the Federation. When that succeeds, 'junior' instinctively identifies the Enterprise as its mother, and locks on, draining energy trough the hull, which is only safely sustainable for a few hours; only after Gordi and Brahms join the bridge, its relevant normal mode of life in an asteroid field is revealed and the duo comes up with an idea...

Season 4, Episode 17: Night Terrors

16 March 1991
The Enterprise has finally tracked the missing starship USS Britain. Counselor Deanna Troi senses trouble with the life on board and joins Riker's boarding party. The crew was slashed to death; the only survivor, Betazoid Ensign Peeples, is in shock. Doctor Beverly Crusher 's autopsy concludes 34 crewmen killed each-other with phasers and other weapons, even bare hands; a tape recorded a paranoiac fear among them. While the Enterprise tows the Britain to the nearest star-base, its own crewmen starts sensing another presence and experiencing rising fear, plausibly working up to dangerous paranoia. The ship itself gets stuck in a rift in space; Data finds the Britain tried to escape from the same with a blast, the technicians have a hard time finding a better alternative, at Picard's request with (fear-immune android) Data temporarily in command. Meanwhile Dr. Crusher gets nightmarish hallucinations herself but concludes from a chemical imbalance that all the humans have stopped getting REM sleep and therefore dreams (only Betazoids Troi and the survivor have nightmares), which is driving them insane, Worf is the first to nearly commit suicide. Then Troi finds her vision of eyes in the dark is identical to the surviving ensign Peeples's, not a nightmare but a message from other victims; she hopes to communicate with them by 'directed dreaming'...

8 February 1992
The Enterprise is on a mission to warn the human colony of an artificial paradisiac biosphere on planet Moab 4's southern colony of the approach of a massive stellar fragment, which will impact with seismic force causing a tectonic disaster. However its competent, considerate leader Aaron Conor refuses to evacuate, confident their biosphere can withstand earthquakes. He does allow a small Enterprise party to visit their society, which they believe far superior after eight generations of selective breeding which nearly eliminated the remaining human risk factors. Despite their rigid rule never to leave, scientist Hannah Bates is allowed to come aboard to work out a method to deflect the approaching fragment jointly with Geordi, who as blind man would not even have been born in their society, by a tractor beam and updates to the biosphere itself. Picard disapproves of genetic 'predisposition' on principle, Troi becomes platonic intimate with Conor, who would be prepared to accept her even as genetically inferior mate. The deflection works at the last second before energy would have been fatally overcharged: the colony is safe from impact, but Hannah reports fatal tectonic damage, which Geordi soon finds to be faked in order to get out of controlled life. She and others want asylum aboard, but the colony's delicate balance can't cope with such change. Conor, although in fact tempted himself, feels guilty and desperately tries to save the society...

31 October 1992
Returning with three minor female crew members from the planet Marlonia, Picard's shuttle is disintegrated by an energy field; all were beamed aboard just in time, but with a mass loss of 40% and physically rejuvenated to adolescent bodies, while mentally unchanged, yet on Dr. Crusher's warning mental decay may follow, Picard transfers command to Riker indefinitely. Guinan sees it as a change to enjoy youthful pleasures, Ro Laren can't stand remembering life in the refugee camp, Keiko finds her husband just can't act marital with an apparent child; Picard ponders acceptable alternatives: a second youth at the Starfleet Academy and/or archaeological research. The scientists work out how the quartet's DNA was preserved while complementary, age-critical RVS sequences are lacking, and consider a cure based on encouraging experience with plants Keiko was carrying. However while the ship answers a rescue call from a scientific colony, it is captured by renegade Ferengi, who even consider the crew as slave loot. Only Picard's party is left unguarded, appearing inoffensive children, so they decide to keep that cover, helped by real boy Alexander, to counterattack, if they can first get the 'child-lock' on computers lifted...
