15 December 2009 2:53 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Sir Elton John's recent work with an Australian collaborator has seen him a highly sought recording star. John's new material is the result of teaming up with dance producers Pnau, who work closely with Empire of the Sun - Australia's hottest rock music property at the moment. A source said: 'Elton says he's writing his most exciting new stuff for years - possibly decades. Working with Pnau has got the creative juices flowing again. They have got a load of big companies sniffing around.' John, meanwhile, has faced difficulties in his personal life. His recent attempt to adopt a child from Ukraine was knocked back and his good friend Stephen Gately died …

Sir Elton John Is Recording His New Tracks

The music legend has reportedly sparked a bidding war between record companies who are desperate to release his new music – which he has worked on with Australian producers P’Nau, known for their work with Empire of the Sun. A source said: "Elton says he's writing his most exciting new stuff for years - possibly decades. Working with P'Nau has got the creative juices flowing again. They have got a load of big companies sniffing around." The ‘Your Song’ hitmaker is not the only veteran star to take their music in a different direction. Sir Paul McCartney released the album ‘Electric Arguments’ under the title of his side-project The Fireman with music producer Youth. Speaking about the LP, the former Beatles star said: "Originally, when I started the group, I used to joke with Youth in the studio, where we'd be putting together these midnight-dancey, ambient records, saying to him, …

La Roux 'felt pressure from critics'

8 December 2009 8:11 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

La Roux singer Elly Jackson has admitted that she felt under pressure after being named in the top five of the BBC Sound of 2009 list. The 21-year-old revealed that the duo had not even completed their debut album when they were tipped for success. "It was a bit like... well I've only released one single. And then there's just this massive pressure 'Well where's your record?'" she told BBC 6 Music. Jackson also claimed that she was flattered to be included in the list alongside Florence And The Machine, White Lies, Empire Of The Sun and winner Little Boots. "It was flattering. But I don't think any of us had finished our records yet. We would have all been annoyed if we weren't in it," she said. (more) …

More Cast Added to Night of the Living Dead: Origins

5 December 2009 1:56 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Danielle Harris is getting some help fighting off the zombie hordes in writer-director Zebediah De Soto's "re-imagining" of George Romero's horror classic Night of the Living Dead, titled Night of the Living Dead: Origins.

THR reports that Bill Moseley (1990's Night of the Living Dead), Joe Pilato (Romero's Day of the Dead), Alona Tal (Supernatural), Jesse Corti (Heroes) and Cornell Womack (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) will join the previously cast Harris to do voice work on the CGI-animated movie. Moseley will play Johnny, Harris' brother, while Pilato and Tal will play the voice of the Coopers, the couple who argue to stay in the basement in Romero's original. Corti will play a no-nonsense New York cop and Womack a news reporter.

Moseley and Pialto's ties to Romero are no coincidence, and De Soto calls the casting "a nod to Romero fans. Horror is a genre and zombie movies …

They’re Coming To Get You, Barbara: Romero’s Classic Zombie Film Inspires CG Adaptation

3 December 2009 1:01 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is being remade by a brave/foolhardy Hollywood duo. Back in 1968, a low budget film-maker from Pittsburgh got together ten friends and changed cinema history. That it was a film about dead cannibals taking over the world belied the ground-breaking social and political subtext.

Fast-forward to 2009 and two brave souls named Zebediah de Soto and producer Simon West have decided on an inspired take of the original material. It is not going to be another re-hash…well it is and it isn’t. The two filmmakers shall be employing computer animation to realise their zombie dreams.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog spoke to de Soto recently and he explained his “vision” for the piece:

“I wanted to make this look like a living Monet; it’s expressionism. It’s going to be the first zombie movie played on a epic scale. …

Night of the Living Dead 3D Cartoon Adds Food, I Mean Cast

Hoping for some new and unique ideas to come out of the zombie community in the next few years?! Well sorry to burst your bubble kids, but Night if the Living Dead: Origins will be put a stop to any of that. Against the hopes of Romero fans, Zebediah de Soto's Debut film will move forward and has just added a few names to the voice cast... yes, voice cast. This remake will be done entirely in CG says the director, who seems to already have a Hollywood sized ego about himself and his bound-to-be-shitty film. .I wanted to make this look like a living Monet; it's expressionism," De Soto said. "It's going to be the first zombie movie played on a epic scale. This is the 'Empire of the Sun' of zombie films.. -de Soto to THR Does he not just sound like a pompous prick? He …

It's been a little over a month since last we talked about Zebediah de Soto's Night of the Living Dead: Origins, and since then two more stars have agreed to lend their voices to this truly original spin on the classic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter joining the previously announced Mos Def as Ben, Danielle Harris as Barbra, Joe Pilato as Harry Cooper, Alona Tal (Jo on "Supernatural") as Helen Cooper, Bill Moseley as Johnny (reprising his portrayal of the same character in Tom Savini's 1990 Notld remake), and newcomers Erin Braswell as Judy and Mike Diskint as Tom will be Jesse Corti ("Heroes") and Cornell Womack (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen).

Corti will be voicing a news reporter, and Womack will portray a no-nonsense New York cop.

Sam Worthington has been named Man of the Year at the annual GQ magazine awards in Australia.

The Terminator Salvation star was handed the honour at a glitzy ceremony in Sydney on Thursday night.

Worthington was humble in accepting the trophy, telling the assembled crowd, "I think it would be arrogant to say these are the qualities you should have as a man and I think that other people should be able to assess where you are in life and your good qualities. So, as long as you can make people happy, that's what you should be aiming for."

Lennon, Manson and me: the psychedelic cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky

13 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The El Topo and Holy Mountain director thrilled the 1970s counter-culture. Now his crazed visions are turning on everyone from Santigold to Kasabian

Eyebrows, hopes and ceremonially lit bongs were all raised earlier this year with the news that Alejandro Jodorowsky was finally making another movie. The high priest of head-trip cinema, Jodorowsky blew the collective mind of the counter-culture with a handful of supremely odd movies in the 1970s, such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain, but despite continual promises and rumours, Jodorowsky's long-awaited return never seemed to materialise. In the meantime, his work has been seized upon by a new generation of hipsters desperately seeking out-there inspiration, as we shall see. This year, though, at the Cannes film festival, Jodorowsky announced he had raised the cash for his next movie. It would be called King Shot, and it would be a metaphysical western set in a desert casino, …

Fred Dekker Revisits The Night of the Creeps!

16 October 2009 7:44 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The most elusive cult creeper ever made finally makes its way to DVD and Blu-ray October 27th!

Night of the Creeps has become one of the most sought after late night cult creepers ever made. After hitting the video store circuit in the mid-80s on VHS tape (and VHS alone), the film quickly disappeared. It would later crawl out from late night cable television on that rare occasion, like some long dormant creature hungry for flesh. It's never been re-released on any medium, and has only made a handful of appearances at the local midnight theater. Despite that fact, Fred Dekker's amazing 1986 ode to aliens, zombies, and high school romps has developed a rabid following over the years. Revolving around squirmy black leeches that possess a town full of teenagers and treats them like puppets on prom night, it's a hard film to shake. And the fact that …

Zebediah de Soto Explains His Vision for Night of the Living Dead: Origins

The CGI wizard/director explains how he won't tarnish the image of the original George A. Romero film

For fans of classic filmdom, remakes can be a tough pill to swallow, and there likely can't be harder fans to please than fans of the 1968 George A. Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead. Director Zebediah de Soto knows full well the fears fans of the Romero zombie film may have towards his new origin story film, Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D, largely because he is a horror fanboy himself, even commenting on our story on Danielle Harris' casting of Barbara. He wants the fans to know that he is not trying to tarnish the legacy of this great horror film, but merely expand upon it with his new Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D that will give us a new 3-D/CGI look at parts of …

Norman Rockwell: Dead But Busier Than Ever

7 October 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

In truth, the re-appreciation of Norman Rockwell has been going on for a while. Go back to Steven Spielberg’s 1987 film Empire of the Sun, and you’ll see a tableau early in the movie—a mother and father lovingly tucking in a boy (who happens to have been played by the young Christian Bale)—modeled explicitly upon Rockwell’s famous painting Freedom from Fear. Even back in the 80s, when the default hipster take on Rockwell was that he was a cornball moralist, at least a few people recognized his narrative acuity. But as my article in the the November issue of V.F., “Norman Rockwell’s American Dream,” points out, we’re now living in a time more hospitable to Rockwell’s work. His pictures, idealized as they are, remind us that the American ideal wasn’t always a matter of bling, great rooms, “home theaters,” and other hallmarks of modern American schmuckdom. …

Like hardboiled noir detectives, we've been hitting the streets lately for the skinny on the shifting musical predilections of one Shawn Carter, Aka Jay-z.
