Own the rights?
A sequel, DESPITE the first 7 minutes of the film distorting the continuity between the two movies; this has merely been provided as a re-cap. It is said that Sam Raimi had lost the rights to the first film and had to reshoot the begining in order to provide said re-cap so new footage was shot. The second film really begins when Ash is propelled into the air by the deadite forces as seen in the first film. Originally it was to have all 5 members of the group travelling to the cabin, but for budget and time considerations it was edited down to just Ash and Linda.
Simple answer, he does not "go back". In order to go back to anywhere, you must first leave. Ash does not leave the cabin at the end of the first film. As Ash does not leave, he therefore can not go back can he?The first 7 mins of Evil Dead II are a re-cap of events from the first film with some trims made, just to get the important stuff covered in so little time. This re-cap had to be re-shot as there were legal isues with getting footage from the first film. Which is why there is a "new" Linda and none of the original characters (except Ash and Linda) return. In "reality" Evil Dead II "starts" just where The Evil Dead left off. With "The Force" rushing the cabin and hitting Ash. If you watch the first film and then ignore or fast forward the re-cap in Evil Dead II...it makes much more sesne and flows as a sequel.
Ash is sucked into a vortex meant to dispel the evil summoned by the Necronomicon. He travels back in time to the 13th century, a set up for the sequel Army of Darkness But in army of darkness they change the ending a bit to continue the film. .
This is most likely a goof on the part of the director, Sam Raimi. Although Ash is able to see straight ahead through the doorway, Jake is still able to run straight through and surprise him with a tackle. The only explanation left would simply have to be that the filmmakers were less than vigilant. That, and it added suspense and a good shock to the movie.
While at the beginning of the film, Ash is looking at the Necrinomicon while listening to the tape recording, keep in mind as previously stated that this is all done for re-cap, As soon as Ash is attacked by the "invisible force" the movie begins, and if you watch the movie closely the book of the dead is never seen again, they only use the lost pages. The only true continuity error is the dead bodies of all the characters from the first movie aren't in puddles of goo around the cabin. But it could be said that once the book of the dead was destroyed, their bodies disappeared completely.
