The film is actually very close to its source material. Apart from some minor details the main differences are: Kirsty is 25 years old and not Rory's (film name: Larry's) daughter. She is some friend or neighbour with a crush on Rory. Therefore there's no other love interest for her in the novel. Also very notable considering his importance for the film franchise: There is no Pinhead character. One cenobite is said to have nails in its skull, but it's a female and she's not important. The big finale is only between Kirsty and Frank. There are no multiple Cenobites she must defend. Kirsty is chosen as the new keeper of the box in the end and hopes to bring Rory back somehow.
