The man responsible for the terror that was Captain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the joy that was He-Man in Masters of the Universe revealed to MTV that he’s in talks for an unnamed part in the upcoming Conan reboot. Lundgren caught MTV New’s attention with this little ditty:
“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan”
As to whether anything was definite, the man went on to say:
“It’s too early”
Regarding a question about when he might know for sure, he responded:
“probably next year”
He-Man need not go on.
Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming Sly Stallone-directed mercenary flick, The Expendables, which has the same production team as Conan. He-Man can network.
The new Conan is to be directed by Marcus Nispel (who replaced Brett Ratner) and penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Nispel helmed Friday the 13th »

In an article that was published yesterday in The Wall Street Journal about the newest Hollywood fad to make movies based on children's toy lines like Transformers, Barbie and Masters of the Universe, a new toyfilm project and who is attached to produce it was mentioned for the first time. It hardly takes up any room in the piece but right there in the middle of the copy the Journal states that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams is in talks right now to make a film based on Micronauts, the sci-fi action figure toy line that was popular in the late 1970s with kids.
Micronauts was designed by the Japanese toy manufacturer Takara and released in the land of the eastern sun in 1974 as Microman. The Mego Corporation brought the line to North American audiences in 1976 and rebranded it Micronauts. The 3-3/4-inch figures had imaginative names like Acroyear, Baron Karza and Time Traveler, »

The legendary action star tells all about Sylvester Stallone's magnum opus
Dolph Lundgren is one of the many "tough guy" icons that is set to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action extravaganza The Expendables. Next week, he has his own film coming out that he wrote and directed called Command Performance. And boy, is it a doozey! True fans of the action genre won't want to miss this story of a rock and roll drummer named Joe who battles terrorists at a Russian pop venue. It is one of the funnest movies of 2009, and a blast of fresh air for those tired of the many wimpy actors currently ruling our Cineplex scene. We recently caught up with Dolph on the streets of Los Angeles to chat with him about his latest project. You can read all about Command Performance in our DVD section. The action star directs this one-of-a-kind rock and roll hostage thriller
Dolph Lundgren has directed, maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly one of the coolest, strangest, funniest fuck-em-up hostage thrillers seen in (at least) the last five years. Not one to take himself or his image too seriously, Command Performance is a tour de force that proves the legendary muscle man (who first made his appearance known in Rocky IV as Russian boxer Ivan Drago) still has what it takes to decimate a room full of heavily armed bad guys. Its no lie when I say Command Performance is hands down the most fun you'll have with any action movie being released this year. It earns 2009's Mega-Awesome Achievement Award simply for having the balls to pull off many scenes like the one below:

Happy DVD release day, people. Hitting stores this week is one of the year's biggest films, the animated film Monsters vs Aliens, plus a number of indie flicks you might have missed including Sam Mendes' Away We Go, Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience starring Sasha Grey, and Shrink starring Kevin Spacey. Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom is also available for rental exclusively at Blockbuster today, but in a strange deal, it will not be available to buy in the U.S. until January (it will be available in Canada next week, however). In terms of TV releases, there are a ton of Fan Favorites collections for classic shows, plus season 4 of How I Met Your Mother, and then there's the massive 70th Anniversary Edition of The Wizard of Oz plus Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal on Blu-ray. Is it really 22 years since Dolph Lundgren and a rubber faced Frank Langella battled for control of the Universe?
That film never lived up to the potential of the cartoon and was something of a disappointment. Having the battles raging on Earth instead of under the Eternian sky was a mistake, as was not including Orco; the result was a derivative mess and (this may be against sacred HeyUGuys lore) I didn't really care for it.
In recent years the property has fallen into the maudlin mists of nostalgia, however this has not halted the return of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to the screen and Variety is reporting that the rights to the film adaptation have moved from Warner Bros to Columbia. Those following the saga of Justin Marks' Grayskull script may be disappointed to learn that Columbia are going back to the drawing board with the movie, »

Just when you thought/hoped another big-screen adventure of He-Man was never going to get made, along comes a studio to save it.
Columbia is in talks to acquire the production rights of the popular ’80s toy line from Mattel, something Warner Bros was not interested in doing.
Earlier this month, Warner decided to let their option lapse, changing their focus to the development of DC Comics characters.
The film was intended to be another live-action version of the famed ’80s toyline and was tentatively titled Grayskull. The original big-screen adaptation was 1987’s Masters of the Universe which starred stage star Frank Langella as Skeletor. He went on the play Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon.

On the same day as Mattel announced their partnership with Universal Pictures for a Barbie movie, the toy company has news on the delayed He-Man feature film. Sony is finalizing a deal that will acquire Masters of the Universe for a live-action adaptation.
According to Variety, the story will revolve around a prince who becomes the warrior He-Man and battles the evil forces of Skeletor for control of his magical homeland, Eternia.
The property was originally set up at Warner Bros, but the studio passed on it after working with producer Joel Silver since 2007. Mattel started shopping the movie (also being called Grayskull) around earlier this month.
The script by Justin Marks that received a lot of Internet praise unfortunately remains with WB, so a new writer will need to be hired before production can begin. This also means the director, John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda), will probably leave after »

Wow, Sony has been busy as of late - they have acquired two fairly “hot” projects, the new live-action He-Man/Masters of the Universe movie, as well as the Robert Rodriguez faux-trailer-turned-full-length-feature, Machete.
It’s only been a couple of weeks since Screen Rant reported that the live-action Masters of the Universe had left Warner Bros. and shed producer Joel Silver. The reason for this was reportedly because of a disagreement between WB/Silver and toy makers Mattel, about the direction the film was going in.
However, fear not He-Man fans, as Variety is reporting that Sony is in the final stages of making a deal to produce the new Masters of the Universe, with Escape Artists shepherding the project. Sources close to the negotiations say that both Sony and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will soon start developing the project for »

Sony will produce a feature adaptation of Mattel's He-Man action figure line, based on the Filmation Studios cartoon hero, with Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch developing the property for Columbia Pictures. The original Filmation Studios animated He-Man: Masters Of The Universe TV series, inspired by author Robert E. Howard's Conan The Barbarian, aired 130 syndicated episodes in 1983, featuring muscle-bound 'He-Man' defending 'Eternia' and the secrets of 'Castle Grayskull' from the evil forces of 'Skeletor'. The series was followed in 1990 by The New Adventures of He-Man. The first series was set during the aftermath of a 'Great War', when the 'Sorceress of Castle Grayskull', aka 'The Goddess', gave 'Prince Adam', son of planet Eternia's 'King Randor' and the earthling 'Queen Marlena', his super powers. Adam would hold aloft the 'Sword of Power', proclaiming, "By the power of Grayskull...I have the power!" Adam's physique would then »

Mattel have been busy. As well as the announcement that Columbia are in talks to aquire the rights to Masters of the Universe, Universal have bought the film rights to another Mattel cornerstone – Barbie.
Following months of negotations Universal and Mattel have put a deal in place for a big screen adventure for every girl’s favourite doll. Until now Barbie has seen a string of direct to DVD child hits with Universal releasing films like Barbie – The Island Princess and Barbie – The Magic Of Pegasus. THR has more:
Laurence Mark, whose credits include “Jerry Maguire” and “Julie & Julia,” is producing.
Barbie, celebrating her 50th anniversary as one of the top toy brands in the world, has never been adapted into a live-action film, though not for Hollywood’s lack of trying. Mattel has been extremely protective of the toy, which has generated billions of dollars, wanting nothing to tarnish the polished image. »

Warners and Mattel recently parted ways over their Masters of the Universe movie, and it seems that Sony has picked up the baton. Meanwhile, Barbie is set to star in her own film, joining Hot Wheels, Max Steel, Major Matt Mason and a new line of Universal monster toys on Mattel's movie roster. You want toys? You got 'em.The projected new He-Man movie will be built again from scratch since Warners retain the rights to the screenplays produced for Joel Silver. Unsurprisingly, the story is about a prince who becomes a warrior and battles Skeletor for his homeland of Eternia. No new writers have yet been assigned, but the new producers for Sony are reported to be Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists, who were behind Knowing and The Taking of Pelham 123. So they know the action, and they know the sci-fi fantasy, and they know the PG-13. Interesting. »

It's a busy day for Mattel - the company has sold the rights to star doll Barbie to Universal and has seen Sony snap up Masters Of The Universe. Yes, Universal, clearly not satisfied trying to buy up every board game ever produced to turn into films, has set its sights of the world's most recognisable piece of plastic this side of Pamela Anderson's chest. "Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands," gushed Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger to Variety. "So many...

Warner Bros Pictures, just a few weeks ago, let go of the Mattel property called Masters of the Universe due to several conflicting viewpoints on how the movie would be approached. The studio parted ways, leaving the toys turned animated show to find another company to pick it up. Columbia Pictures has swooped on in to take the toy property and spread it onto the big screen. Columbia brings the production company Escape Artists into the fold to produce. Escape Artists have a few films within their resume that include The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and Knowing.
He-Man originated out of the toy line called the Masters of the Universe out of Mattel in 1981. The story has constantly revolved around the planet Eternia where He-Man would be in constant battle with Skeletor over protecting their world and the Castle Greyskull. Warner Bros. has elected not to renew a deal with Mattel that would have enabled the studio to make a 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' movie, so Columbia Pictures has stepped in and is currently in negotiations to acquire the rights.
According to Variety, the property — which originated in 1983 as an animated series and toy line — had previously been set up at Warner Bros., where Joel Silver had been developing a pic since 2007. Mattel wound up taking back the rights and leaving the lot after Mattel, the studio and Silver couldn't agree on the creative direction of the film.
When the option came up, both sides decided to let it lapse. Director John Stevenson (Kung-Fu Panda) is no longer attached to the project, which will go back to the drawing board.

I'm being mocked in the MTV newsroom for my excitement over this news, but I don't care. He-Man is a badass, and not because his alter-ego -- Prince Adam -- is named like my name. That's not the only reason anyway. No. He-Man is a badass because he rides a Battle Cat and talks to his magical sword and still wins the day every time. He was also brought to life by Dolph Lundgren in the first movie adaptation of the Mattel toy line, and you just don't mess with that man.
Don't count on Lundgren coming back for the long-gestating second attempt at an adaptation, which has finally found a home with Sony, according to a report in Variety. Sony is partnered with Escape Artists, with the project being led by producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, who intend to start "from scratch."

I'm so glad that on the same day we get to report that the likely to be extra-silly Masters of the Universe movie may be a go at Columbia, I also get to cover Universal's plans for a film based on the Barbie toy line. But, really, how is there not already a Barbie movie? (One that isn't porn?) How has Mattel failed to make a whole damn series of these movies? There are direct to DVD animated things, sure, but nary a notable or forgettable feature. According to Mattel, the time is now! Variety reports that Universal's deal with Mattel will now make a Barbie movie into reality. Mattel claims a 99% global brand awareness, says the line is the top girls toy property and top doll property in the Us, and that "Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands. »

When Warner Bros. ditched their plans for a live-action He-Man movie a few weeks ago, it looks like the whole notion of bringing the Masters of the Universe to the big screen was doomed. But Sony has found a way to keep the dream alive of ruining your favorite childhood cartoon; they've picked up the rights to the action figure line, according to Variety, and will produce the film with Escape Artists. Apparently all the development that took place at Warner Bros. will be scrapped, and Joel Silver, who was developing the film at WB, is not on board this time. Given that we don't really know anything about what they were trying to do with the film the first time, it's hard to know whether this is a good or a bad thing. I'd have been happier with them giving up on the idea entirely, but with money to »

Fans of the Four Horsemen look forward to each summer when they release their wave of figures from the Seventh Kingdom, a magical world created in house. The characters in this universe tend toward the anthropomorphic - we’ve seen cows and elephants and warthogs and rhinos, just to name a few. This year they got in touch with their feminie side, producing a wave of 11 female figures.
The background is fairly simple. Queen Alluxandra is the human on the side of good, while Isadorra is the evil chick opposing her. The other nine figures are part of the “queen’s council”, warriors that fight for one side or the other. I’ve already reviewed Allux and Izzy, as well as the six matching cat girls. The leaves just three ladies, all a bit on the mutated side.
As is usual for a Four Horsemen Seventh Kingdom release, the figures »
