“Blood: the last Vampire” is an interesting proposition, not only because it sees Jeon Ji Hyun (“My Sassy Girl”), one of Korea’s most popular actresses, making her English language debut, but also since it represents one of the few Hollywood Japanese anime adaptations to make a real effort to build upon its source material. The film is based upon the 2000 anime from Production I.G of “Ghost in the Shell” fame, which was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (one of the key animators who worked on the classic “Akira”), and was helmed by Chris Nahon, who previously had cross-cultural cinematic experiences with the French-English outings “Empire of the Wolves”, and “Kiss of the Dragon”, arguably one of Jet Li’s better Western efforts. Adding to its pedigree is the presence of Corey Yuen, one of Hong Kong’s most prolific and best known action directors, who recently worked on the

Akira Live-Action Adaption Script from Iron Man & Children of Men Writers?

Just a quick update from the oh so active rumor mill for Warner’s live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira. According to Collider, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are currently working hard on the script for Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way. Both of them were responsible for the scripts of Children of Men and Iron Man (at least parts of it) so we can at least hope that Akira won’t suffer the same ill fate as some other recent manga adaptations…
Production is now supposed to start in 2010 with a theatrical release a year later.

Review by: Linus de Paoli
Rating: 6 out of 10
I was looking forward to seeing this unusual co-production from Russia, Japan and Canada! Everything about this project sounds like a lot of fun. It has a wild soundtrack by DJ Krush, beautiful artwork by 4C (the company that also did the animation for “Tekkonkinkreet” and “The Animatrix”) and a crazy story with occult Nazis and Russian soldiers. What more can you ask for? It had its international premiere as part of the big Manga Night on the Piazza Grande, that started off with Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Mobil Suit Gundam 1” from 1981. After 2 ½ hours of old school animation, I was pretty anxious to finally see Yoshiharu Ashino’s debut as a director.
The story is simple, though it consists of many elements: World War 2 has reached its peak and Russia

Leonardo DiCaprio Journeys to a Brave New World

Director Ridley Scott is highly regarded by fans of science fiction as a visionary thanks to his 1982 movie Blade Runner, an adaptation of the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. So Universal Pictures has high hopes that if anyone can faithfully translate the classic dystopian novel Brave New World into celluloid, it's Scott. Of course, having an A-list actor like Leonardo DiCaprio on board to star in the movie can't hurt.
Writer Aldous Huxley's most famous work, Brave New World takes place in the bleak future of the 26th century, where society is rigidly stratified, families are outlawed, and human reproduction occurs only in factories. Rumors have circulated about Scott's involvement in a possible movie adaptation of the novel for a while now, but this is the first time that the noted director has been officially linked to the project. Scott and DiCaprio have

Welcome to another ride in the Akira rumor carousel! After the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira manga has been declared dead back in June, Japanator reports that Warner is indeed still actively working on the script.
At least this is what producer Andrew Lazar let slip during the Comic Con panel for the comic adaptation Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox.

Blood: The Last Vampire—A Critical Overview

Sufficiently entertaining, but just so, Blood: the Last Vampire relies heavily on its production pedigree and its existing anime franchise to promote its vampire adventure. Renowned producer Bill Kong—responsible for such sumptuously mounted vehicles as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; House of Flying Daggers; Curse of the Golden Flower; and Lust, Caution—teams up with director Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon) for this English language adaptation of the popular award-winning anime film of the same title by Production I.G., released worldwide in 2000, and directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (the key animator for Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira). The story is set in Japan during the fall of 1966, when the United States involvement in Vietnam has turned into a full-scale conflict. A stunning 16-year-old girl named Saya, wearing seifuku and armed with her katana, is sent by a mysterious “organization” to hunt down vampires that are hiding amongst the inhabitants of the Yokota U.

Viva Neo-Manhattan! Live-action Akira Canned?

Neo-Manhattan is about to Explo…eeeeh or is it? Bloody Disgusting reports that Warner Bros’ planned live action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira is “dead as a doornail” and even supposed Irish director Ruairí Robinson is said to have left the project.
The two-part adaptation financed by Leonardo Dicaprios Appian Way was supposed to open this summer.
To be honest, I was kinda curious about what a director like Robinson would have made of the cult classic manga source. My suggestion to the Japanese right owner: use Warner’s money for full fledged anime-adaptation of all six manga volumes with at least 52 episodes…

The Movie:
Now is a good time to own a blu ray player Final Fantasy fans.
In 2001, Squaresoft made their first foray into the motion picture industry with Final Fantasy: The Spirits With. With their gorgeous cinematics within the games they made, surely a film made by them would be a phenomenal piece of work? Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Though Spirits Within had some dazzling CGI, its plot and script left a lot to be desired, and ultimately becoming a box office disaster for the company. Though it has its share of fans (like yours truly), even they agreed that Square could have done something a little bit more true to the game universe (or universes) that they created. Cut to 2005, Squaresoft, now Square Enix, announces a new Final Fantasy movie, this time, a direct sequel to their most beloved game of the series, Final Fantasy VII. Fans were ecstatic,

Updated with an English subtitled version of the trailer. Thanks Brian!
After achieving huge international acclaim as the director of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kenji Kamiyama evidently felt the need to step out from the shadow of Mamoru Oshii and Shirow Masamune and so has struck out to do something unrelated to the cyber-punk epic. We first heard about Kamiyama’s upcoming Eden of the East about a year ago and with the film due to hit Japanese airwaves soon we’ve been watching the official website closely, waiting for the day that a trailer would arrive.
Hello trailer!
This looks very different from Kamiyama’s earlier work and yet, in many ways, is immediately recognizable as his, dipping into familiar themes of technology and terrorism. And it’s also got a naked man waving a gun, which is not something you see on the streets every day.
