District 9 DVD Cover Art and Specs

9 December 2009 8:35 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Neill Blomkamp’s breakthrough hit “District 9″ on standard DVD and Blu-ray December 22 2009 (just in time for the sci-fi fan in your household, natch). Starring Sharlto Copley and produced by Peter Jackson of “Lord of the Rings” fame, the “Alien Nation”-esque movie took the box office by storm when it was released, and garnered mostly positive critical reviews, which translated into excellent box office recripts, making it one of the few sci-fi moves released in 2009 that can make that boast. DVD cover art and specs below. From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original sciencefiction thriller that “soars on the imagination of its creators” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed… only to be exiled to a …

Channel Surfing: Elizabeth Banks Heads to "30 Rock," Tim Minear Gets "Terriers," Anthony Zuiker Tackles "Cyber Crimes" for CBS, and More

8 December 2009 7:22 AM, PST | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Welcome to your Tuesday morning television briefing. Elizabeth Banks (Modern Family) is heading to NBC's 30 Rock next, where she will recur in "at least four episodes," according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello. Banks will reportedly play a love interest for Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy, which begs the question of just how this will affect Julianne Moore's multiple-episode story arc this season. Is there a love triangle brewing for Jack? (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files) Whedonverse alum Tim Minear has signed a new two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television, where he has been based as a writer-producer for the last twelve years. Under the terms of the deal, Minear will develop new projects for the studio as well as come aboard FX dramedy Terriers as an executive producer, alongside Shawn Ryan and Ted Griffin. Minear's attachment allows Ryan to focus on Fox's Lie to Me and new development. …

Sneak Peek: Syfy's Alice

4 November 2009 1:46 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Syfy has become known not just for cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks but also remakes, or "reimaginings," of several classic films and shows. They had Children of the Corn recently, they had Tin Man (a modern take on The Wizard of Oz), and they have an Alien Nation remake in the works (not to mention Quantum Leap).

They're also doing Alice, which is their take on Alice in Wonderland. Here's the trailer. It premieres December 6.

The Caprica Marketing Never Stops

30 September 2009 6:29 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

With Caprica due out on the Syfy Channel in early 2010, they’ve already generated interest in it by releasing screeners of the premiere episode to industry critics and selling the DVD.

Now they’re taking it a step farther and taking the Battlestar Galactica prequel to film festivals.

The film festivals they’re scheduled to appear at are the upcoming Woodstock Film Festival on October 2nd and 4th and the Austin Film Festival on October 24th

As much as I’m looking forward to the series because I was won over by the pilot, I feel this is starting to border on marketing overkill.

I have to admit that since the network has changed its name to Syfy, the advertising schema has changed a bit - they’ve gotten more aggressive and pervasive on their own and other networks.

How do you feel about this new avenue of marketing Caprica? …

Starting on September 21st, NBC.com will start streaming old episodes of Chuck.

The episodes will include the pilot episode of Chuck and the 2nd season.  Yet for some reason, they’ll be rolling them out 5 at a time.

I guess they don’t want you to just show up and get Chuck burnout!

Fringe Season 2 Premiere Review & Discussion

17 September 2009 10:43 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

So Fringe made it to season 2, surviving the knife that ended The Sarah Connor Chronicles and almost took down Dollhouse. It premiered tonight, bringing up our favorite cast: Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and the ever quirky John Noble.

Call me a cynic, but the first thing I noticed is that Fox TV has done away with the experimental abbreviated commercial breaks. No more will you see (apparantly) “Fringe will return in 30 (or 60) seconds.” Nope, standard commercial breaks just like every other show out there now.

Btw, there will be spoilers mentioned below and in the comments left by visitors.

Beyond that nitpick (I watch it DVR’d anyway and skip commercials) Fringe wasted no time coming back with a bang. After the weak Warehouse 13 substitute to tide us over, it was great to have some actual intense and exciting semi-sci-fi drama to watch once again.

The episode opened right …

Reminder: Fringe Returns For Season 2

16 September 2009 8:24 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Fringe is back for a 2nd season, don’t forget!

Last season Olivia (Anna Torv) met William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) in the alternate reality, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) has a secretive past only hinted at, Walter Bishop (John Noble) has what looks like a serious ethical nightmare to deal with and the FBI is just confused in general about what their Fringe department does. I think we have lots of material ripe for discussion!

Fringe is moving to Thursdays, starting this Thursday, September 17th.

Film review: Why you must see District 9

16 September 2009 3:57 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Although released in the USA on August 14, the sci-fi drama District 9 is only on its second weekend here in the UK.

Having been away on two holidays in the past few weeks, I missed the press screening and have just had chance to see this film, hence this slightly belated review.

But I'm determined to write about it here on The Geek Files because I want to recommend this as a must-see piece of cinema and one of the best films this year.

Drama, suspense, humour, action, intelligence, social observation, sci-fi, relatable themes, and layers of meaning that point a knowing, accusing finger at the inhumanity of man. It's all in there.

Produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) and co-written and directed by Neill Blomkamp in his feature film debut, District 9 might seem at first glance like a rather overt apartheid allegory or derivative of Alien Nation, …

The Mundane Fantastic

15 September 2009 12:49 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

In this summer's most spectacular features -- from CGI-driven live-action movies to 3-D animated fare -- the real star has been the camera. It's as lively, confident and versatile as any lead actor, taking any opportunity to get into character for a particular shot or sequence, doing whatever it needs to do to sell a moment. Much of the epic run time of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is shot with a wobbly handheld camera, following its heroes through a series of burning, crumbling, exploding landscapes as giant robots scramble along in the background or duke it out like boxers; the action is framed and shot to suggest that we're seeing a documentary event -- a catastrophic or miraculous occurrence that just happened to be captured for posterity. Ditto "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." When the cybernetically enhanced soldiers soar through the air, the camera shakes, and the …

Angie Harmon Lands A Guest Role On Chuck

If you have found yourself missing Angie Harmon on the tube, you’ll get a bit of a dose of her once again.

She’s joining the cast of NBC’s Chuck for a guest appearance in the 4th episode of the upcoming season of Chuck.

She’ll be playing Sydney who is a spy.

To be honest, she hasn’t been missing.  I just haven’t caught her on TV.  Of late, she’s been in or on Inconceivable, Secrets of a Small Town, Women’s Murder Club, Living Proof & Samantha Who.

Kristin Kreuk Joins The Cast Of Chuck

3 September 2009 8:37 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang on the CW’s Smallville) has landed a role on the NBC TV series Chuck.

Kristin will be playing the role of Hannah, who Chuck meets on a flight to Paris.  Hannah then ends up getting laid off from her cool job and finds herself working for Buy More.

So the question remains: Can Kristin stretch her acting wings and bring a different feel to this character, or are we going to see the same wistful delivery we got used to over on Smallville?

I am really hoping that she shows more depth of character, or to be more exact, the ability to make this role a unique character and not just Kristin playing another role.

I’m not saying that’s bad, I’m just saying.

Want to Watch The Fringe Tweet-Peat With The Stars?

This Thursday (9/3/09) night, episode 19 of season 1 of Fringe will be aired.  Yes, it’s a repeat.  But there’s a new twist to this episode.

We’ll be seeing live commentary, behind the scenes bits and viewers questions answered via Twitter from cast and crew scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

Fox is calling it their “Tweet-Peat.”

Those that will be twittering will be Jeff Pinkner & J.H. Wyman who are the executive producers of Fringe and stars Joshua Jackson (who plays Peter Bishop) and John Noble ( who plays Walter Bishop).

The only down side is that the actors will only be tweeting during the Eastern timezone airing while the exec. producers will be tweeting throughout both.

The Fringe Twitter accounts you would look for to participate with are:

It’s a new week and today your TV news includes a look at Fringe’s second season; Superman will be teaming with Chuck; The Alien Nation is rising again; True Blood takes a big bit of DVD sales; Patton Oswalt talks life on Caprica; and could Supernatural rise from the grave?

Got a few pics from Fringe’s upcoming second season. The pics include The Bishops (Joshua Jackson, John Noble) and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) up to their usual hijinks in the lab, as well as guest star Meghan Markle, who will play junior FBI agent Amy Jessup - I’m guessing while Sr. Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is hanging out with Leonard Nimoy in alternate dimensions.

District 9 Review

14 August 2009 1:49 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

District 9” is a gritty faux documentary that takes us to Johannesburg in South Africa to witness the momentous arrival of a towering alien spaceship. Instead of heavenly voices and benevolent, super-intelligent space brothers, us humans are greeted by a race of starving, diseased, crustacean-like creatures whose crumbling UFO has simply run out of gas. Unsure of what to do with these million or so wretched refugees, South Africa sets up District 9, an alien internment camp eerily reminiscent of the Apartheid-era slums. Apparently, they’re just too “alien” to cuddle up to.

The aforementioned screwing of yourself is no longer of any concern to me, because frankly, District 9 is a smarter and more action-packed story than what you guys probably would have tried to get them to do with a Halo flick. My guess is you would’ve pushed for a PG-13 rating to get more people in seats. …

Cinematical Seven: Favorite Movie Aliens

13 August 2009 7:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

No, we're not talking about folks whose immigration status is in question, but actual visitors from another planet. This weekend marks the release of District 9, in which an alien race is forced to live as second class citizens in slum-like conditions on Earth. To commemorate the occasion I'm taking a look back at seven of my favorite cinematic aliens.

Alien Nation

This 1988 flick seems like the perfect one to start with since the plot reminds me so much of District 9. The film is set in the far flung future world of 1991, just a few years after a space ship filled with escaped alien slaves landed in California. Known for their large spotted craniums and their tendency to dissolve in salt water, the aliens are referred to as newcomers and their assimilation into the Los Angeles population has been difficult. Since the newcomers are not particularly welcome they have become America's newest oppressed minority. …

Tim Minear Heading Up Alien Nation Remake

3 July 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

In what appears to be a direct response to Neill Blomkamp's District 9 and ABC's upcoming V remake [1], Sci Fi Channel [2] (who are officially changing their name to SyFy as of next week) have unveiled plans for a remake of another Kenneth Johnson TV series: Alien Nation. Based on the 1988 movie starring James Caan and Terrence Stamp, the show ran for just one season on Fox, but was continued a few years later with five made-for-tv movies. The new take on Alien Nation is expected to be set in the Pacific Northwest, and will pick up 20 years after a number of of alien ships have crash landed on Earth. The aliens, dubbed "newcomers", have since attempted to integrate with human society and their population now numbers in the millions. The show, much like its precursor, will address issues such as racism, terrorism and immigration, but will also apparently maintain the buddy cop angle. …

'Alien Nation' resurrected for Us TV

Sci-fi movie Alien Nation will return to television with Tim Minear attached to pen the series. The Firefly and Angel scribe is developing a new take on the 1988 James Caan and Mandy Patinkin vehicle, in which a human cop partnered with another from outer space after aliens attempted to assimilate into human society. The film was also made into a 1989 short-lived programme on the Fox Network, while the reboot will appear on the Sci Fi Channel. "It's genre mixed with procedural mixed with funny and mixed with big, giant scary," Minear told Variety. (more) …

‘Alien Nation’ Reboot In the Works On Sci-Fi

1 July 2009 5:07 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

According to Variety, the Sci-Fi Channel is developing a reboot of Alien Nation, the 1988 feature film starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin that led to a a spinoff series on Fox. Spearheading the new series for the network will be Tim Minear, former Angel writer/producer and veteran of other sci-fi shows like The X-Files, Firefly and Strange World — a rather interesting show made with Howard Gordon that only lasted one season.

In case you’re not familiar with the premise of Alien Nation, it centers on the partnership between a veteran cop and his alien detective partner, set against a world where alien “newcomers” have landed on Earth and are attempting to assimilate into society. Of course, assimilation is easier said than done and as the unlikely partners relationship grows stronger, so do the obstacles that these two face from within the department and the world at large. Sci Fi Assimilating Alien Nation

Sci Fi is developing a TV reboot of Alien Nation, adapting the 1988 feature that previously spawned a one-season spinoff TV series on Fox. The new show will be written by Tim "The X-Files" Minear. Fox 21, a production arm of producer 20th Century Fox TV will produce. Premise of the original feature followed an unlikely partnership between a street cop and his 'alien' detective partner, set against the larger tale of alien 'newcomers' who move to Earth. "It's absolute perfect timing for this type of show," said Fox 21's Chris Carlisle. "At the heart of Alien Nation, it's a cop movie. It's grounded. And it has a tremendous amount of dramatic possibilities and humour." "It's very much in keeping with what we've been looking to do," said Sci Fi original programming exec VP Mark Stern.
