John’s Top Eleven Films of the Decade

6 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I was just under 11 years old as we entered the 2000s, and in the last decade I have made it my mission to fill the space in my mind that should be reserved for academics to remembering the details of far too many films. In looking back upon this decade, it seems that we’ve had quite a good chunk of time for movies — there are only two years absent on my top ten list: 2000 and 2005, while 2006 is represented by three films. I still cheated, though, by extending my list to eleven entries. Some were just too good to decide between.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. And before you start — don’t cry. The Dark Knight isn’t on here.

11. The Royal Tenenbaums – 2001

Spoiler: you’re going to find that comedy is slightly underrepresented on this list, with Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums

'Everybody's Fine' Too Cloying to Feel Authentic

3 December 2009 9:40 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Everybody's Fine seems tailor-made for those with big hearts, small brains, and a wad of tissues in their pockets. Despite a solid cast and strong source material, this remake of a 1990 film from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore quickly devolves into a mess of treacle and tears.

In the comedy-tinged drama, recently widowed Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has lost touch with his grown children Amy (Kate Beckinsale), Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Robert (Sam Rockwell), and David (Austin Lysy), particularly since the death of his beloved wife. When everyone fails to show up for a family event at his home, Frank decides to head across the country to surprise each of his sons and daughters.

A trip to New York finds artist David absent from his downtown apartment, and Frank's other visits don't go much better. He is quickly shooed away from Amy's Chicago home, and his arrival in Robert's Denver doesn't last much longer. …

Exclusive: Robert De Niro and Kirk Jones for 'Everybody's Fine'

1 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

For his roles in such '70s and '80s classics as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Robert De Niro has been revered as the master of Method Acting. But of late he has been more closely associated with animated family fare (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Shark Tale), thrillers that failed to deliver thrills (Hide and Seek and 15 Minutes) and slow plodding dramas (City by the Sea and Men of Honor). Even his recent reunion with Al Pacino in Righteous Kill failed to spark with audiences.

For much of this decade, many De Niro-led films have neither ignited the box office nor drawn critical kudos. But there have been a few notable exceptions. As Frank, the curmudgeonly soon-to-be-father-in-law in Meet the Parents, De Niro struck gold. The sequel, Meet the Fockers, raked in almost $280M in international ticket sales. And What Just Happened? …

Apocalypse Now tops London critics' 30th anniversary poll

1 December 2009 2:46 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war is named best film of the past three decades, beating Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List to the top spot

Apocalypse Now was today named as the best film of the past three decades by the London Film Critics' Circle (Lfcc). Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war beat out Steven Spielberg's 1994 holocaust drama Schindler's List to take top spot in the poll, held to celebrate the organisation's 30th anniversary.

Third place went to German film The Lives of Others, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Oscar-winner for best foreign language film in 2007. The top five was rounded out by two very different movies with western themes: Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, from 1992, and Ang Lee's 2005 tale of gay cowboys, Brokeback Mountain.

Chair of the circle and Observer writer Jason Solomons said: "I'm delighted that such a powerful and …

'Red Cliff' Just the Latest Film Re-Edited for American Consumption

26 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Last Friday marked the arrival of Red Cliff (read our review here) the new war epic by Chinese action-meister John Woo. But this wasn’t the same version that graced Asian theaters prior to its international release: In its home country, Red Cliff was released as two films, the first in mid-2008; the second in early 2009.

Rather than unleash a nearly six-hour magnum opus on audiences worldwide, Woo pared both films down into a single two-and-a-half hour cut. In interviews, he said the deleted scenes mostly placed the film’s events in historical context, which might not have appealed to Westerners unfamiliar with Chinese history. Woo’s movie depicts the famous Battle of Red Cliffs, which was fought around early 200 A.D. between warlords from the northern and southern regions of China.

It’s too early to tell how successful Red Cliff will be with North American viewers (In mainland China, …

Everybody's Fine: Will Make You Call Your Family

17 November 2009 3:45 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

If there's anything to take away from the very relatable new Kirk Jones film, Everybody's Fine, it's this: call your family. The critics' screening of the film, usually a room filled with hard-hearted people taking notes, was sniffling and sobbing after the film. I called my parents and, by Sunday, my mom was visiting me in New York, a rare occurrence. Everybody's Fine - a remake of the 1990 Italian film starring Marcello Mastroianni by Giuseppe Tornatore (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) - is a road trip of a film starring Robert De Niro as Frank Goode, a retiree living in solitude after the death of his wife, eight months earlier. When his kids all cancel on a planned family weekend, Frank decides to crisscross America via Amtrak, surprising his kids Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Amy (Kate Beckinsale), and Robert (Sam Rockwell), with a visit and getting a glimpse into their successful lives. Italian Animal Rights Group Call For Director's Arrest Over Bull Slaughter Scene

4 October 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Italy's entry for the Best Foreign Film prize at the 2010 Oscars is at the centre of a new animal cruelty controversy.

Officials at the country's National Association for Animal Protection (Enpa) are calling for censors to pull Giuseppe Tornatore's film Baaria from cinemas over a gruesome bull slaughter scene.

Enpa leader Carla Rocchi has filed a complaint calling the scene, in which a bull has its throat slit while still alive, "senseless cruelty."

The animal rights group officials also suggest the filmmaker should be prosecuted.

At the recent Venice Film Festival, where the movie premiered, Cinema Paradiso director Tornatore revealed the bull scene was shot in a slaughterhouse in Tunisia with a real animal. …

Blogging Live from Toronto '09: Part 3 - Final Fest Wrap-Up

20 September 2009 10:29 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

To end the Toronto Film Festival, I caught a 9:30Pm screening of The Disappearance of Alice Creed at the Ryerson Theater late last night. We arrived just on time, as I had just finished a big dinner with some friends, and decided to sit on the balcony. I'd never set foot up there before (in three years) and thought, why not check it out? The seats were fine, although they were far away, but as is usual when sitting below the projection booth, I could see the light shining in the air from the window all the way to the screen. What a way to end this fest, I thought, getting that true feeling of sitting in a cinema (think Cinema Paradiso). That kind of experience is just one of many that I will never forget from Tiff this year. Another favorite part of this fest is the music …

Abhay Deol talks about 'Road, Movie'

17 September 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Having delivered a slew of sleeper hits that broke Bollywood stereotypes and gave the Indian film industry a new direction, Abhay Deol, who hails from an illustrious film family, is being touted as India's young, successful new-age hero.

His much-discussed Hindi language feature, 'Road, Movie', termed as the Indian Cinema Paradiso, has been officially invited for a world premiere as a special presentation at The Toronto International Film Festival, 2009.

In a rare interview, the young Deol opens up about the film that's been kept guarded all this time:

What was your reaction when you first heard the narration of 'Road, Movie' from Dev Benegal?

I didn't have a narration, I actually read the script and it was really nice, dreamy and humorous. It's Rajasthan (a North-Indian state), so I kinda had a nice feel about it. I knew Dev (Benegal) and was sure that he would get a good team together. …

Everyone’s Fine Movie Trailer

16 September 2009 9:36 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Miramax has released a trailer for Everybody's Fine, a remake of Cinema Paradiso filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1990 film Stanno Tutti Bene. The film stars Robert De Niro as "a widower who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect." Written and directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine), and also starring Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell. The trailer presents a film we've definitely seen before, and is a bit too generic for my tastes. There has been buzz that De Niro could be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance, although the trailer shows no evidence to back up this claim. I heard the trailer was attached to Extract, which seems odd that the film has taken nearly two weeks to appear online. Watch the trailer online now, embedded after …

Denis, Rivette, and Moore!: Venice Lineup Announced

30 July 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, noticing that the Venice Film Festival announced the lineup for it's 66th installment on Thursday. Here's the in-competition list, with a few bits I managed to find about each film.

Baaria (Opening Film) dir. Giuseppe Tornatore

The director of Cinema Paradiso gives us a three-generation spanning epic about his Italian hometown.

Soul Kitchen dir. Fatih Akin (pictured)

Akin directed the terrific Head-On and The Edge of Heaven (if you haven't seen either or both, do now). He re teams with Birol Unel from Head-On for a comedy about culture and gender clash.

La Doppia Ora dir. Giuseppe Capotondi

It's been tough finding information on this as Venice's website (nor IMDb) has much at the moment. I can tell tell you is that it's a freshman effort, it's Italian, and it's fun to say... La Doppio Ora!

Yi ngoi (Accident) dir. Cheang Pou-Soi

A Palme d’Or nominee and winner of the Fiprexci Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, La Grande Bouffe is one of the best known and most controversial arthouse films of all time. Directed by Marco Ferreri (Tales Of Ordinary Madness) and starring four of the finest European actors of their generation – Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita), Michel Piccoli (Atlantic City), Philippe Noiret (Cinema Paradiso) and Ugo Tognazzi (Barbarella) – La Grande Bouffechronicles, in unflinching and often hilarious detail, an outrageous weekend-long orgy of gluttonous debauchery undertaken by four middle-aged friends.
