Death By "Torchwood": Captain Jack, Ianto Jones, And The Rise Of The Queer Superhero

Few deaths have been more shocking to gay television viewers than that of Ianto Jones in this summer’s Torchwood: Children Of Earth. His death during the fourth night of the BBC miniseries created a huge backlash, none of which surprised me more than claims that Ianto’s demise was an expression of the show’s homophobia.
Created by Russel T Davies, an openly gay writer famous for the complex and empowering Queer As Folk, and starring John Barrowman, who might just be the most boisterously “out” star in the industry, Torchwood has been a bastion of queer pride since its debut in 2006. It evokes a world where homophobia is so non-existent that labels “gay,” “straight,” and “bi” have become irrelevant.
So how does the death of one of TV’s few prominent queer characters involved in a same-sex relationship fit into the show’s socially progressive vision? To my mind,

The 50 Best Gay Movies (2009)

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at
AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we
think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many
of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay
or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not
just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also
discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest
Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of
more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay
movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll?

New York actor David Garrison is immediately recognizable, be it as a lawyer on “Law And Order,” or Steve Rhoades from the immensely successful “Married … with Children” TV series (1987-1990). Ask the Flying Monkey! (May 14, 2009)

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Regarding that, um, interesting scene of Kirk
(Chris Pine) in his underwear in the new Star Trek: since the
movie supposedly takes place in the 22nd century, that's presumably what
men will be wearing then, right? So where can I get the underwear of the future
... today? -- Steve, Philadelphia,
Pa
A: Personally, the Flying Monkey is holding out hope
that the not-so-distant future will see a return to the simple beauty
that is a pair of tighty-whities, but I suppose I should just be thankful that
the new Smokin' Hot Kirk wasn't wearing saggy, baggy boxers.
Unfortunately, the undies worn by Smokin' Hot Kirk in the movie were
made of pure Romulan silk and were created by the Edoian designer Rakop in
the year 2250. In other words, they don't actually exist yet.
