It Happened In Hollywood Last Night: Bryce Dallas Howard and director Jodie Markell with Tennessee Williams' The Loss Of A Teardrop Diamond

(Filmmaker Jodie Markell and actress Bryce Dallas Howard, above.)

by Terry Keefe

The American Cinematheque at the Aero Theater hosted a screening on Wednesday evening of The Loss Of A Teardrop Diamond, which starred Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator: Salvation, Spider-man 3, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and was directed by first-timer Jodie Markell, both of whom were in attendance and participated in a Q&A afterwards.

(Bryce Dallas Howard, above.)

There are many films this season competing for Oscar glory which likely have far bigger marketing budgets than Teardrop Diamond, but Howard deserves strong consideration in the Best Actress race for her work as the troubled Fisher Willow, a complex young woman who might turn into Blanche DuBois 20 years down the road if she continues to make the wrong choices. The film's script was actually written by Tennessee Williams directly for the screen, but was only recently rediscovered. The film is …

Ellen Burstyn on Living "Hard and Honest"

16 December 2009 2:00 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Jodie Markell's The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond is a work with a fascinating backstory. It started when Markell, an actress who has made a career of sorts excavating and refurbishing the 'lost' works of a variety of artists (she brought Sophie Treadwell's lost 1928 work Machinal to the New York stage in 1990), found a never-produced screenplay in an anthology by one of the greatest American playwrights, Tennessee Williams. Determined to bring it to the screen, she got the funding and the approval from the Williams estate, and cast Bryce Dallas Howard as Fisher Willow, a classic Williams herione. The set-up is simple: Fisher, an heiress, has returned to 1920s Memphis society, and finds herself trying (and often failing) to fit in. She asks the poor caretaker's son, Jimmy Dobyne (Chris Evans) to escort her to social events, and the clash between the rich girl, the poor boy, and …

Ellen Burstyn: 'I Never Had the Option of Being Conventional'

14 December 2009 12:40 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

One of the true treasures among American actresses, Ellen Burstyn returns to theaters this week in Tennessee Williams's The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. Based on a 1957 script long thought lost, the film stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Fisher Willow, a headstrong young woman looking for a little more excitement than staid upper-class Memphis is ready to provide just before the Depression. Fisher becomes involved with sharecropper Jimmy Dobyne (Chris Evans), who escorts her to a Halloween party where all kinds of Williams-esque drama breaks loose. Director Jodie Markell parses the material with care and reverence, rarely more evident than in the long scenes Burstyn shares with Howard as Miss Addie, a bedridden stroke victim who asks Fisher for a favor highly likely to crimp the holiday festivities downstairs.

Three days after celebrating her 77th birthday, the Oscar-winner talked to Movieline about finally getting a crack at Tennessee Williams, …

Blu-Ray Review: Wordy ‘Angels & Demons’ Fails to Illuminate

2 December 2009 5:45 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Give Ron Howard an intimate character study like “Frost/Nixon,” and he’ll knock it out of the park. Give him a sprawling plot-driven thriller like…well, let’s face it: anything written by Dan Brown, and he’ll be consumed by the enormity of his subject. Yet while Howard’s “The Da Vinci Code,” failed on a human level, it did succeed in highlighting the tantalizing questions raised by Brown’s text, particularly the implications of historical distortion throughout the centuries. When the characters were allowed to simply analyze the story’s inherent mysteries, the film took flight.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Unfortunately, “Angels & Demons” never has a chance to truly engage, which is partly due to the fact that the material itself is less philosophical, and more on the level of a conventional thriller. That isn’t to say that Brown’s story (which was originally the prequel to …

Come Watch the Trailer for 'Loss of Teardrop Diamond'

30 November 2009 4:19 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

A little less than two weeks ago I featured the poster for Bryce Dallas Howard's The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond and now we have the trailer.

The film is a long-forgotten Tennessee Williams screenplay starring Bryce Dallas Howard as Fisher Willow, the disliked 1920s Memphis debutante daughter of a plantation owner with a distaste for narrow-minded people and a penchant for shocking and insulting those around her.

After returning from studies overseas, Fisher falls in love with Jimmy (Chris Evans), the down-and-out son of an alcoholic father (David Strathairn) and an insane mother who works at a store on her family's plantation. She tries to pass him off as an upper-class suitor to appease the spinster aunt (Ann-Margret) who controls her family's fortune, but when she loses a diamond, it places their tenuous relationship in further jeopardy.

'Teardrop Diamond' Finally Finds a Trailer

27 November 2009 8:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I was convinced this day would never come... I first wrote about The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond over three years ago when the forgotten Tennessee Williams screenplay got tapped for a feature film. Lindsay Lohan was set to star in it, before her heaps of turmoil turned her career sour. In 2007, Bryce Dallas Howard stepped in to replace Lohan, and in 2008, we finally got a still from the film. Now the movie has quietly swam through the festival circuit and is slated for release at the end of the year, which means we finally get a trailer, which you can see after the jump, courtesy of Coming Soon.

The trailer can certainly send you back in time, but maybe not to the right time. The whole thing reeks of 1980s Hallmark melodrama, from the scenes to the text and somber voiceover. Bryce Dallas Howard stars as Fisher Willow, a …

Chris Evans and Bryce Dallas Howard star in this period drama with Ellen Burstyn. The film is helmed by actress-turned-director Jodie Markell.

The story follows the young and rebellious débutante Fisher Willow, who tainted by family scandal, boldly hires farm hand Jimmy Dobyne to be her gentleman escort for the lavish season party. Bryce Dallas Howard In The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond Trailer

25 November 2009 1:01 PM, PST | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

Considered a “lost” screenplay, this is an original screenplay from the legendary Tennessee Williams which will finally see a release at the end of the year.

The film tells the story of Fisher Willow (Bryce Dallas Howard). After returning from overseas, she falls in love with Jimmy (Chris Evans), the son of an alcoholic father and an insane mother. She does everything in her power to pass him off as a wealthy suitor so that she can appease her family, especially her aunt (Ann-Margret), who controls their fortune and who would deem Jimmy completely unsuitable based on his family’s background. Fisher, however, realizes she has lost a diamond, which might put her relationship in jeopardy. (Wikipedia)

Head on over to Coming Soon who have the brand new and exclusive trailer available to watch now.

Fake 'Twilight' Actors Looking To Make Out And Baseball's World Series In Today's Twitter-Wood

"Twilight" actress Anna Kendrick has a clever friend who's not above impersonating an "Eclipse" actor to make out with unsuspecting prey, so next time someone walks up you at a club telling you they've been filming with David Slade recently, double-check IMDb. Slade, meanwhile, announced an "official" wrap to "Eclipse" filming yesterday, following last week's tweeted wrap by Christian Serratos.

Elsewhere in Twitter-Wood, Rob Zombie noted the passing of former Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits with a memorial post. The World Series had much of Twitter's attention as Ice-t captured a picture from the stands and Paul Feig pondered the art sunflower seed spitting. You can catch all of that, a Dalek and Emmy Rossum's Ferragamo dress fears after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for October 29, 2009.

Blu-Ray Review: Gaudy ‘Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Lacks True Holiday Cheer

20 October 2009 2:57 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Just weeks before the opening weekend of Jim Carrey’s new “A Christmas Carol,” Universal has released a Blu-Ray + DVD combo pack of the nearly decade-old “Grinch” remake, featuring Carrey as the infamous Seussian Scrooge. The combination of Carrey’s star power and Theodor Geisel’s beloved source material assured the film’s massive box office success. But no matter how much dough it raked in, few family audiences actually seemed to like it. That’s because no one behind the camera had a clue about how to stretch this simple tale into a feature-length blockbuster.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

The original “Dr. SeussHow The Grinch Stole Christmas” was a half-hour cartoon first broadcast in 1966, featuring masterful narration from Boris Karloff, exuberantly funny animation from Chuck Jones, and classic songs written by Seuss and unforgettably performed by Thurl Ravenscroft. It remains one of the finest holiday films of all time, …

Ron Howard Talks ‘The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft’

25 September 2009 12:37 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There’s been some chatter on the airwaves about Ron Howard, the director of Willow, Splash and Backdraft (just to name the big ones), taking on the cult-hit comic-to-film-adaptation, The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft.

According to the website devoted to the comic, it tells the story of a generally pitiful and sad pulp-horror writer (name provided in the title) who suffers unrequited love, lack of professional esteem, etc… until he one day comes across a book that somehow brings the bad guys from his worst nightmares into the real world - and only he has the power to destroy them! If you don’t know, H.P. Lovecraft Was an actual fantasy and horror writer in the U.S. during the early part of the 20th century: he wrote deeply pessimistic tales in which his protagonists get a brief glimpse at the horror of reality.

New Twitter Avatars, Warwick Davis And A Busy Day For 'Eclipse' In Today's Twitter-Wood

Warwick Davis has only gotten cooler in my eyes since I started following his Twitter account. The "Harry Potter" and "Willow" star apparently set up a laser tag match this week with John Williams' "Star Wars" score playing in the background, which sounds like quite the celebration of sci-fi geekdom.

It was also a relief this morning to read that I wasn't the only one seeing little bird-shaped, multicolor avatars everywhere when I logged in to Twitter. Diablo Cody and Richard Kelly experienced the same thing with reactions similar to my own. If you know what I'm talking about, or want to find out, click on down below and read their posts, along with Peter Facinelli's exhausting end-of-day tweet from the "Eclipse" set and a Selena Gomez Alma Award pic for all you "Wizard of Waverly Place" fans. Warmoth is out of town, covering something for @multiplayers. So you Twitter-Wood-ers are stuck with me, your friendly neighborhood MTV Movies Blog editor. My picks aren't usually as structured as Brian's are, and today is no different. Still, there's plenty of fun, funny and fascinating pulled together for you after the jump.

First up is "Harry Potter" star Tom Felton, who's spending some vacation time with Universal Studios and Scrabble. Then we've got "Jennifer's Body" writer Diablo Cody coining a new phrase and Rob Corddry asking a ridiculous question. Also, Kevin Pollak offers a hilariously descriptive rundown of his preparations for a coming colonoscopy. Plus, sound advice from Denzel Washington (take note, Kanye-haters), observations on the female anatomy from Michael Ian Black and "The Office" star Rainn Wilson's steamy night... alone. Bryce Dallas Howard in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond

Photo: Paladin I just received a press release from the new independent film company Paladin, announcing they have picked up and will release The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans, Ellen Burstyn, Oscar nominee Ann-Margret, Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer and Will Patton. The drama is based on a heretofore unproduced original screenplay by legendary writer Tennessee Williams and directed by Jodie Markell, in her feature debut. In one of the few reviews of the film coming out of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, Joe Leydon at Variety offered up mixed feelings with the following intro: The fragrant aroma of magnolias is undercut by the distinct smell of mothballs throughout "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond," an admirably earnest but curiously flat attempt to film a long-unproduced scenario by Tennessee Williams.
