Waylon Smithers was designed to be "Mister Burns' white sycophant," as it "would be a bad idea to have a black subservient character" putting up with the abuse that Burns doles out. (Quotes are from David Silverman, one of the show's main producers.) Ironically, Smithers is colored as an African-American in his first appearance The Simpsons: Homer's Odyssey, due to color stylist Gyorgyi Peluce's misinterpretation of the new character. Aspects of the opening credits are usually changed with each episode. Elements changed include the blackboard message Bart writes, the sax solo played by Lisa, and most notably the sequence right after Homer gets chased through the garage. I'd give a higher rating, but The Simpsons's died long time ago and should have ended when it had some dignity left. Now every episode seems like the same.
That said The Simpsons was solid stuff years ago. It was funny, touching and thought provoking. Best episode that comes to mind must be Bart gets an F (I hope that is the real name or this is really embarrassing).
