How To Cinematically Fall Off the Grid

29 November 2009 8:06 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

On August 15th, 2009, Evan Ratliff, a freelance writer for Wired magazine went missing. On purpose. He wanted to see if one could disappear into the ether in an age where we are surveilled, swiped, and social security numbered to death. Where our IPs are tracked and we willingly give information about our lives through social networking. In a recent issue of the magazine, Ratliff recounted his attempt to change identities alongside the mad pack of tech savvies who were trying to find him (and earn a bounty of $5,000). It's in that spirit that I wanted to see what we could learn from films about the subject of leaving your life behind and creating a new identity. 1. Double Back The Film: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade The Lesson: One of the first things Ratliff does is allow a toll checkpoint to register his ID tag before tossing it out the window, doubling …

More Dead Cert photos, Asphyx remake comments

3 November 2009 10:20 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The exclusive pics from the UK vampire movie Dead Cert just keep coming; producer Jonathan Sothcott sent over some more, which you can check out below. He also gave us a few words and the first poster for another upcoming project: a remake of the 1972 cult chiller The Asphyx.

“We are just going into our fourth week of production on Dead Cert, and are now based in a studio in Essex,” Sothcott tells Fango. “Next week we start all the wirework for the mother of all vampire battles. Our gang of vamps looks amazing—Billy Murray as Dante has this amazing, dangerous stillness and so much dignity. Dave Legeno [the villain from The Cottage] is an absolute powerhouse, and Andy Tiernan is just hypnotic on screen.”

Dead Cert, which we last covered here, is being directed by Steven Lawson and also stars Craig Fairbrass and Steven Berkoff. “We have some incredibly gorgeous girls in this film too: Lisa McAllister, …

Skywalking To San Francisco

On Tuesday, I headed north . . . the good people of Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light & Magic hosted a screening of "The Box" an invited me to stay at the legendary Lucas ranch for the night and tour the facilities.

The property itself is everything a fanboy could dream and more - as an alumni of USC and an acolyte in the church of Lucas - I was speechless when I was granted …

Earhart Goggles Tops Celebrity Auction Items

12 October 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hilary Swank's new biopic about Amelia Earhart is sure to be a fly-away success if demand for the aviator's memorabilia is an indicator - her goggles topped all celebrity items at a California auction last week.

The eye accessories Earhart wore during her historic 1932 solo transatlantic flight sold for more than a guitar Elvis Presley used onstage in Las Vegas and an endoskeleton from Terminator sequel T2 3-D.

Auction experts at Profiles in History were stunned as the goggles sent bidding into a flurry - they eventually went under the hammer for $141,600 (GBP94,400) at the 37th Hollywood Memorabilia Auction.

Presley’s personal Martin D-28 guitar state, used in his final Las Vegas performance, fetched $106,200 (GBP70,800) and an original hero screen-used T-800 Endoskeleton from T2 3-D: Battle Across Time went under the hammer for $94,400 (GBP62,933).

Also snapped up at the auction: a full-scale screen-used Hero Bumblebee robot from Transformers, Michael Jackson’s iconic illuminating glove worn on state during The Jackson’s Victory Tour and a Harrison Ford-signed Indiana Jones bullwhip from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. …

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009

By

Alex Simon

All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. From his screen debut in Skatetown, USA in 1979, to his final appearance on television’s "The Beast" as a take-no-prisoners cop, Swayze was an unapologetic good ol’ boy who happened to be a classically-trained dancer, student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and possessor of an Iq that was nothing to sneeze at. In fact, he closely resembled Dalton, his character in …

Will Sean Connery be Lured out of Retirement for Indiana Jones 5?

22 September 2009 7:36 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

On the scale of cataclysmic mistakes, Sean Connery’s decision to spurn the role of Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings” ranks prodigiously high. As well as pivoting away from the potential to earn up to $400 million – 15% of the trilogy’s earnings – because he didn’t “get” the story, he also missed a chance to breath new life into his career as an action star that was already well-rounded.  Instead, he decided to play Allan Quatermain in “The League of Extraordinary Gentleman” and only starred in one movie ever again. Now Digital Spy is reporting that studio execs are attempting to coax the 79-year-old Connery out of retirement to reprise his role as Professor Henry Jones for Indiana Jones 5, a role which he had played previously in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. According to one source: “Steven Spielberg has been working on a script with George Lucas

Sean Connery and Harrison Ford To Return For Indiana Jones 5?

19 September 2009 10:54 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Sean Connery and Harrison Ford are set to return to the “Indiana Jones” franchise.

Back when “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was being written, George Lucas revealed that the script had Indy’s father in it, which meant that Sean Connery (Professor Henry Jones Senior) would need to reprise his role. Unfortunately, 79-year-old veteran actor refused and the script was quickly re-written. However, creators on the next movie, the fifth in the hugely successful franchise, are planning to bring Henry back.

A source said:

Steven Spielberg has been working on a script with George Lucas and there is an element of the story that could see Sean returning. Anything is possible in these movies and if Sean wants to return he will become central to the new story.”

No confirmation or denial has been disclosed on this story just yet.

Sean Connery Could Return For Indiana Jones 5

19 September 2009 3:49 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While hardcore fans of the Indiana Jones franchise may have been disappointed by elements of the latest chapter in the Steven Spielberg and George Lucas collaboration, there's no doubt that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a colossal hit. With a production budget of $185 million, Skull became a blockbuster its opening weekend — earning over $100 million — and went on to rake in nearly $790 million worldwide.

Many complained that the franchise had been reduced by the inclusion of aliens into the Indy mythos, while others were simply hoping to see Sean Connery reprise his role as Indy's father, Prof. Henry Jones. Connery's character was initially written into the Skull script, but was removed when the Scottish actor refused to appear again. Though it is implied in the fourth chapter of the Indiana Jones series that Indy's dad has passed away, an insider source is claiming that Spielberg and …

Ford To Swing Back Into Action As Indiana Jones?

15 September 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Harrison Ford has announced he'll bring Indiana Jones back to the big screen for a fifth time - if he's impressed by the film's script.

The veteran actionman cracked his whip as the archaeologist hero in the franchise's fourth instalment, 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, delighting fans nearly 20 years after 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

And after the global success of the last film, Ford would be delighted to star as the adventurer once again.

He says, "The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form. If the script is good, I'll be happy to put the costume on again."

In June, Ford's Indiana Jones co-star and on-screen son Shia Labeouf confirmed a new film in the series is in the works, with director Steven Spielberg overseeing the upcoming project. …

Harrison Ford Prepping For Fifth "Indiana Jones" Film

14 September 2009 11:07 PM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Harrison Ford is preparing to make another "Indiana Jones" film. The 67-year-old actor has revealed he is in talks to play the whip-cracking archaeologist in a fifth film, just one year after he made his comeback in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

Harrison told France's Le Figaro newspaper: "The story for the new 'Indiana Jones' is in the process of taking form. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work."

"If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again."

Harrison first played the iconic character in 1981 blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark." He reprised the role in 1984 prequel "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and 1989 sequel "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" before reprising the part in 2008 after a break of nearly 20 years. …

[DVD Review] Requiem for a Dream

8 September 2009 5:31 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Requiem for a Dream. What in God’s name do I say about this movie? A shattering portrait of lives lost and dreams squandered. A simultaneously crippling and moving cinematic monument and a film rarely bested since its release in simply engaging its audience. If you’re reading this and you haven’t seen Requiem for a Dream, where have you been? Did you die? The film has reached an uncommon level of infamy for a mainstream film. Whether it’s fully deserved depends on who you ask and if they’ve seen the film, and how many times.

On first viewing I didn’t think I’d be watching it very much, but in the years since, the initial reaction of genuine anguish has subsided in favor of the kind of warm, cozy familiarity that comes from those really special movies in your life. Unlike Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, …

Movie History: Journey Back To 1984

I have been following Aaron Aradillas and Matt Zoller Seitz's video features detailing what they refer to as "A Tale of Two Summers," which re-examines summer movies released in 1984 and 1989 and putting them in context of the politics and popular culture that surrounded their release and tries to show how they eventually led to the entertainment that dominates today. The series is featured at L Magazine as well as being posted at The House Next Door (keep your eyes on that site, it's a good one) and Parts 1 and 2, covering 1984, are both online. The following parts 3-5 will be looking at the summer of 1989. With these two parts the boys take a look at Reagan, Ghostbusters, MTV, soundtracks, Risky Business, Sixteen Candles, Purple Rain, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Red Dawn, Gremlins, Steven Spielberg and the advent of the PG-13 rating, They aren't short, but if you …

August 21: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

21 August 2009 8:57 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but you’re in the Nazi-killing business, and business is booming. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Inglourious Basterds this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I took a break from scalping German officers only to watch some of the other B-movie takes on World War II.” Instead Of: Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s pulp-fiction take on the plot-to-kill-Hitler World War II movie, featuring a squad of Jewish-American soldiers -- led by Brad Pitt -- who hunt Nazis and take no prisoners... Watch: The first movie to flat out state, “Nazis... I hate these guys”: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which is just about as deadly to the German soldiers as Basterds is. …

Auto of the week: Chris-Craft Lancer 20 speedboat from The Proposal

21 July 2009 3:09 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Boats are a great excuse for fun in comedies and it’s no different in Sandra Bullock/ Ryan Reynolds starrer The Proposal out tomorrow. Threatened with deportation back to her native Canada, pushy boss Margaret Tate (Bullock) pretends to be engaged to her assistant Andrew Paxton (Reynolds), a ruse that sees the pair embark on a trip to visit his family in Alaska. Cue plenty of comedy hijinks as the mismatched duo begrudgingly gets to know one another, enter stage right the boat, namely the Chris-Craft Lancer 20. You’ll never guess what happens!

The original Chris Craft boating company began back in the late 1800s, founded by Christopher Columbus Smith producing high quality mahogany hulled powerboats. Like all businesses, the company suffered during America’s Great Depression and during World War II branched out into patrol boats for the Us Navy, however its brightest and most profitable era was still …

question of the day: What’s your favorite movie about Dad?

19 June 2009 7:28 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

As I’ve pointed out on a regular basis, so many movies are about women as mothers, as if raising children is the only thing most women ever do with their lives. But there are far fewer movies that are overtly about men as fathers, in which the plot is driven by a man’s relationship with his child. With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday in both the U.S. and the U.K., let’s talk about them. What’s your favorite movie about Dad? Mine might be Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which is not only set in motion by Indy’s investigation of his missing father, Henry Sr., but gives us a delightful father-son relationship between the two men. Of course, as with almost every movie I can think of that’s about a father, it’s also about that father doing a lot more than just being parental, …

Indiana Jones Swings Back Into Action

16 June 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Shia LaBeouf has confirmed movie bosses are planning to bring Indiana Jones back for a fifth time - a new film in the archaeologist adventurer series is in the works.

LaBeouf joined Harrison Ford in the movie franchise's fourth instalment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, last year and played the history hero's son and sidekick Mutt.

After the global success of the film, which came nearly 20 years after 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, rumours began swirling that director Steven Spielberg planned to continue the franchise without Ford - passing the lead to the young Transformers star.

And now the actor has confirmed the legendary director is working on another Indiana Jones picture - but refuses to reveal any of the details.

He says, "Steve just said that he cracked the story on it, and I think they're gearing that up."

Ford and LaBeouf have both dismissed reports that the younger star will be leading the Indiana Jones franchise in the future, even though LaBeouf recently told Playboy magazine that his movie father handed him his iconic hat as a parting gift on the set of the last film. …
